Here's comes the Chisinau reboot. I will post again when it is done. Thanks!

Haha, after the reboot I ran kubectl get pods and saw that many containers were reporting errors, so I had to start them manually. I hadn’t read the post beforehand and didn’t prepare in advance, but I’ll make sure to pay attention next time.

As you certainly know, there are multiple ways to make the host's live performance data available.

What way would you guys prefer?

I always install a open source monitoring agent in the vps, then i can see the charts about usages of cpu, mem, disk, network connections, network traffic , or some network metrics

Using beszel and add multiple hosts in one view, create read only users for who want to see, it help you save time instead of create bunch of users on multiple hosts, and beszel is opensource, easy to setup too :)

or just install node exporter, who want to monitor it will setup prometheus and grafana theirself

    Hello!

I woke up to see a message from Alexhost, whom I had asked to consider trying a power reset. They said there was ping after a reboot.

The server responds to IPv4 ping from here. This is what I have seen to far:

    root@alexhost:~# date
    Sun Aug 17 14:35:55 UTC 2025
    root@alexhost:~# uptime
     14:36:02 up 15:20, 1 user, load average: 0.88, 1.05, 1.11
    root@alexhost:~# virsh list
     Id Name State
    ----------------------
     1 vm3 running
     2 vm2 running
     3 vm4 running
     4 vm1 running

    root@alexhost:~#

    Edit to add:

Looks like IPv6 also is responding to ping.

Sorry for the inconvenience! Maybe I can look at the logs and find out something about what might have happened.

    Thanks @alexhost! <3 Thanks guys! <3

Next I write to Alexhost support to let them know the server seems okay. And eat breakfast. Add some new accounts. More. . . .

I would like to apply for a free VPS.

I am working on Copernicus CDSAPI WebUI, a simple downloader for Copernicus ERA5 Datasets.
I plan to use the VPS to test and improve the usability of my code, monitor Copernicus services, and try out automation workflows.

I hope to be a positive member of the community by sharing feedback, reporting issues, and contributing improvements back to open source projects when possible.

    Preferred Location: Chisinau, Moldova

NAT IPv4 is fine for my needs.

    SSH Public Key
    ssh-ed25519 AAAAC3NzaC1lZDI1NTE5AAAAILDwlNXD6OVrTfVcQmFqlGYs5wVIrzan/U0VWjTgiid0

Thank you for considering my request.

    Hi @seoky!

    Welcome to FOSSVPS!

There aren't yet any NAT IPv4s in Chisinau, so I guess you are stuck with a dedicated IPv4. :)

Later today I will PM you login information. I will post here again after the login information is sent. Please be patient since I am slow. After you get in, and when you have time, please post here to let us know about your progress. If you can't get in, please post here to let us know.

Hope you enjoy your free FOSSVPS virtual machine!

Thanks to Alexhost for their kind donation of the server node! <3

    Best!

    Tom

    Best regards,

Hi @thenet! Nice to meet you!

From just looking at your request, I would say, "Yes, of course! Welcome!"

I have to double check everything, so possibly later today or more likely tomorrow. I will PM you login info and post here when the PM is sent.

Thanks for your applcation! I look forward to seeing you on the server! And to your posts here in this thread. And to your progress with Laravel.

    Hello!

Welcome to our fun server! Hope you enjoy!

I just sent your PM with login info!

Please post here to let us know if you get in okay. Also, we would love to hear about your progress as your VPS gets installed and running.

The more and the better the posts we have here, the morer likely it is that the kind dono Providers will renew their donations and that additional donors will give more servers in more locations.

Thanks to @alexhost for our fun server!

    Always best wishes!

    • Yes.
    • I'm currently developing web interfaces for various open-source CLI projects, such as file2png https://github.com/rekcuFniarB/File2PNG
    • It's easier to login via password on an Android tablet. For the ssh key:

It's under the consideration of key management/distribution across multiple Android devices. And not all SSH clients are created equal on Android, as it might be more difficult for some clients to export/backup the private key.

It looks like the server started the reboot normally at about 22:02 but didn't come back up until Alexhost rebooted it about 23:15.

It also looks like we aren't going to be able to obtain much more information from the logs, because the logs aren't being kept during the reboot phase of the process.

I imagined that there might have been an issue with, for example, my setup of netplan. But from the logs, it appears that the netplan setup is okay. The network seemed fine before the first reboot and also fine after the second reboot was initiated by Alexhost support.

Should we try rebooting again, to test if there might be a repeatable issue? I vote yes. What do you think?

Maybe I am missing something here? Ideas? Thanks! <3

How To Get Your Request Approved

When somebody posts a request, and they have stuff like:

    • they read the OP,
    • links to the sources of not obviously open source software they want to run,
    • maybe been around the LET community a while,
    • maybe a significant number of thanks on their profile,
    • maybe positive and helpful post and comment history,
    • can see their email on their LET profile,
    • polite a/k/a please and thank you,
    • no spammy posts,
    • no troll, nasty, or negative posts,
    • good jokes,
    • nice avatar,
    • nice signature,
    • maybe a link to their website and source code repo,
    • etc.

This isn't a list of rules or requirements. Just a few ideas to consider when writing your request.

More, or different stuff, might be okay. . . . Even brand new LETizens might be okay.

The more effort you invest in your request, the more likely your request will be approved.

Once you are in, it's lovely to post a little about what you are doing and how everything is going. Your contributions to higher quality discussion make it more likely that Providers will continue to donate servers and that FOSSVPS will continue giving away free VPSes to the community.

What open source software do you want to run on your VPS?

I would run a Globalping probe inside Docker. This helps many of us with network diagnostics pretty much as we had mtr.sh in the past. The container only needs ~512MB RAM and from my experience barely uses any network.

    https://dev.to/globalping/become-part-of-the-globalping-community-how-to-run-a-virtual-probe-1iia

How can FOSSVPS view you as a positive and friendly community contributor?
I like testing and running open source infrastructure tools. Hosting a Globalping probe from such rare or not that common location provides help for the project which I think is a good tool for most of us.

    Which location do you want?
    Chișinău, Moldova (Alexhost).

Are you okay with NAT IPv4 or do you need dedicated IPv4?
    NAT IPv4 is fine.

    SSH Public Key (ed25519):

    ssh-ed25519 AAAAC3NzaC1lZDI1NTE5AAAAIPqi+d665xL4m65JA1Agd3TQ2owpnkcg9D3SW7qbEDYk

    Hi! Nice to meet you!

    What do you think about

    and

Is what you want to do different from what is shown on the linked pages?

    Thanks!

    Tom

  • @Not_Oles good find,sir!
I’ll check the other locations you have if you ok with that.

    Cheers 🍻

The VPS seems to be working just fine, and all of the resources seem to be more than enough for all the tests I'll be doing on it.

After that, I've added it to my hetrix tools monitoring, and installed the hetrix tools agent https://github.com/hetrixtools/agent (open source code, available on the link), to be able to monitor the VPS's resource usage. I can also share the public Hetrix Tools page, if @Not_Oles thinks it's a good idea.

Thanks again for the server, @Not_Oles, fossvps.org and the kind server donators! More reports coming soon :)

  • What open source software do you want to run on your VPS?
    - testing agentic flow using N8N or huginn or Node-RED or Kestra, also some dev testing, i like python, php and business intelligence.
How can FOSSVPS view you as a positive and friendly community contributor?
    - I love and use open source, and all ima make going to be open too.
    Which location do you want?
    - LA
Are you okay with NAT IPv4 or do you need dedicated IPv4?

    @jmaxwell

By mistake, I just reverted your VPS to its original "fresh" snapshot.

If I understand right, it means the pre-revert contents of your VPS have been lost.

The mistake happened because I was on the wrong server when I ran that command.

We have been using "vm1", "vm2", etc., on all the servers. Maybe ee need to change that to "servername-vm1", etc.

Probably you can get in with the original credentials previously sent. Please post here to let us know.

If you need help, I will try my best.

So sorry! Thanks and best wishes!
