Have a few servers with them for many years. Depending on what you need - if you need a fast processer and high performance disk, better steer away. They have a constant 5 - 10% CPU steal on my servers. If you need a cheap server with a lot of RAM and storage but does not require high CPU power, they are surely fine to use.
Last black friday I ordered two servers for 5 euro each with 4C/6G/500 GB disk. Solid 100% uptime ever since I ordered them.
One additional thing I liked Contabo is that you can create a Hot snapshot (i.e., don't need to poweroff before creating the snapshot) that is actually working, which comes in super handy. Many other providers allow you to take hot snapshots such as GreenCloud and Netcup, but the hot snapshots are typically dead on arrival.
A provider should not speak ill of other providers, is lack of style
contabo with turin actually good
Huh, has nohavps multiple accounts? 😅
no.
Those who think badly of others are the first to do dirty things
It good for testing, run PoC or application that can tolerate downtime or want to add some replica of app. But for production and stable use: NO!
sorry mr carlin zero it was me using @Alyx 's account wont happen again sir apologies
i offer my sincerest apologies to contabo's hurt feelings and ask them to punish me by raising my cpu steal to 80% instead of the usual 70%
For the price of whatever rubbish Contabo offers, there’s many solid providers here that can meet it or beat it without the CPU steal and downtime.
Plus they are still in 2002 for charging setup fee on a >VPS.
While I wouldn't call Contabo generally rubbish I do agree that there are much more attractive offers here. €5/mo was attractive 5 years ago for what one got from Contabo but nowadays it's not particularly attractive anymore, especially not with bandwidth limited to 200 Mb/s.
Contabo is good... if you like having CPU steal 24/7.
Contabo is a negative example in Germany of how you can only do it wrong. Our notices of termination have been ignored since July 2024, neither by e-mail nor by fax do they want to do anything in any way, fax is also completely ignored. Even our change of address is of no interest to them - just Contabo things.
I've been using it since March 2024. So far, everything is fine, I'm paying 8$
I love this forum
i find it weird that Contabo is a German company. German hosters and German businesses in general usually are good and care about offering a good service, at least the ones I dealt with
Hell No.
Only during a full moon of oddly numbered days
no.
THE BEST!
For idling! 😎
No.
I don't have a provider to even compare with them. They are the bottom of the barrel.
I'm not so sure about that. AFAIK (I might be wrong though) Contabo became part of an international group, probably us-american, so unless I got that wrong Contabo actually isn't that german anymore.
Be that as it may, with the EU-monstrosity and "international" everywhere I'm afraid that most of the "[some country] usually is [whatever]" has long gone - except of course the negative things like bureaucracy, etc.
That said, I for one still am quite happy with my three Contabo VPS.
I didn't know that. I assumed that they're still German because they still heavily use the Deutsch language in a lot of parts of their system, emails, etc.
for me contabo was always a hit and miss. sometimes you order a VPS and it'll be placed on a good node, other times you'll be placed on a node that is screaming for help
Contabo is also known for overselling and abusive users, so there's a high chance you'll end up being on a node with noisy neighbours.
even if you're lucky to be placed on a clean node, it'll shortly face the same problems in no time
it's really sad because it keeps getting worse. Contabo was my go-to for all my projects at some point, but it became unbearable since like mid 2024, so I had to move my projects to netcup, OVH and Hetzner
It's just too good to use.
Maybe they want to look german? Idk. But the relevant point IMO is how they, in particular their top management tick.
Yep, I guess that's plus-minus a correct description.
I'm not even so sure about them overselling. My observations and experience rather lead me to think that they still have serious monitoring problems and such (very?) often simply don't notice heavy abusers until some customers make a lot of noise.
The main bummer for me is that AFAIK only some german locations have been upgraded (to a quite nice level; way faster than before) but not their international ones.
aint a vps like a vps from @HostDZimbabwe
Their promo is always scam. At the first your buying service, after few months getting email, that price increased...
From what I understand, KKR has a significant stake in Contabo and Oakley still has a minority stake. However, most of Contabo's leadership (i.e., CEO), and I believe most of their employees/operations, is still based in Germany.
As for overselling: https://contabo.com/blog/how-we-resolved-the-server-issues-of-2024-a-peek-behind-the-scenes/
It seems like they want to change, but they were definitely doing something odd with ZRAM and SWAP space around a year ago. This blog post (maybe coincidentally) came around the time that Contabo started increasing pricing.
Contabo has a great business model. They could be a great provider. They have investment from one of the largest investment firm's in the world. I'm not sure why they turned out like this.
Yes, AFAIK they are in Germany and at least a significant if not major part of the people there seem to be Germans.
But major shareholders do have a major influence on how the management ticks.
Yep, that always was my impression as well, they do want to change but I'm quite confident that they don't have adequate and proper monitoring in place.
As for testing new or different technologies, oh well, that's normal for providers I guess.
P.S. "Christopher Carter" (the author, supposedly from Contabo, of the linked blog post) definitely isn't a german name.
YESS… if you enjoy SSDs slower than your grandma's USB stick and support that takes 6 days to reply with “everything looks fine” while your server’s been in a coma.
Contabo: 16 cores, 64GB RAM, and vibes only. 😵💫
They changed package names and downgraded or slightly upgraded them, but nothing worth to use it.
