There needs to be more than one /64 to a home customer, in case they need to separate Guest WiFi from their main LAN. And that's just the most basic example, others may include networks for IoT, VMs, containers and so on. A /56 is seen as a reasonable middle ground between /64 (too small) and /48 (too big). Not sure what you mean "it is not a nibble", it is debatable what a nibble even is, when it comes to IPv6. But it is a clean separation on two characters in the IP, you can filter by 2001:db8:abcd:ef00::/56 (basically 2001:db8:abcd:ef*) and it looks clean. Not as if it was a /58, /62 or so.

But it is good to see a provider to be actively interested in IPv6 and have their own opinions about network design.

    What should I offer?

    Any suggestions?

You should offer /64 ipv6 subnet in all your locations.

    @yoursunny can confirm.

    /64 is for homenets

Hosts really should be giving out /48.

And I'll never understand the home ISPs that break all the rules and conventions to the point it becomes a convention with the /56 to home routers... It's literally not even a nibble and cannot be filtered - for example say you have a ddos filter that blocks IPs at the nibble (because with IPv6 you cannot block like you do with v4 per address) - with the way some home ISPs are doing it, you'll block half the neighborhood instead of a single location.

    My basic understanding is this:
/40 or higher for webhosts, etc.
/48 per VM / client site
    /64 per end-user
    /128 per end-user device, etc.

Meanwhile @AspireHosting provides /74 subnet in one of their locations (in others they don't have ipv6 at all).

If that's not breaking conventions then I don't know what is...

    Current situation:

    1. Dallas - /74 (Will be changing it to /64 soon, need to find a proper time to schedule it)
    2. Miami - /64
    3. Frankfurt - Same as dallas, will schedule downtime/maintenance when possible and implement /64.

    Thanks :)

But - A /64 can be sub-delegated down so that your vlans are on /72 or whatever you feel like. And I really think that's a VERY rare use-case. Most home ISP users aren't running all that. If they are - they should probably have a /48 (which the ISP should give without complaints tbh). There is also the option of using IPv6's "NAT" features to use local-only IPv6 addresses that are translated at the router --- I KNOW - I KNOW - it breaks the "P2P, PTP" of how the internet is supposed to behave and what IPv6 is supposed to fix.. but it also saves a lot of people that are used to using LAN/NAT IPv4 networks from having their devices that they probably haven't secured fully exposed to the internet...

A nibble is definitely cleanly defined. ARIN won't even let you do rDNS servers on something that isn't a nibble. If it cannot end where the next : begins, not a nibble.

:) And finally --- another SANE PERSON that cares about IPv6. Nice to meet you :)

The automatic address selection via SLAAC will not work on any subnet smaller than /64, so you're left with DHCPv6. And not every client device supports DHCPv6 (Android doesn't!), and IMO it is a hassle to set up and use.

hey @rm_ nice 2 see you ... what are you up to lately ?

    all good i hope

hey, i have setup ipv6 only vps and i can ssh all the time but keep losing outgoing internet.

    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback

    #iface eth0 inet dhcp

    auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet6 static
        accept_ra 0

            netmask 48
            gateway 2a0f:...:abcd::1

when i restart networking, it works,,,, discounnect and comeback tomorrow... no outgoing and i have to restart again.

can you please tell me something i ask the provider to check? or fix the above

On Android - I have an app that makes DHCPv6 work ;)

But I agree - SLAAC is the best practice just because it's so widely supported. IDK what Google was thinking by leaving DHCPv6 out of Android... It's the only case I can think of...

I get a /56 at home. I wish VPSes would come with at least a /56, too. Wireguard needs it's own /64 really. It won't share. Otherwise you end up with IPv6 NAT for wireguard.

That's one thing Linode does right. They gave me two /64's, and would have switched it to a /56, as well, if preferred.
