For a funny little personal project that provides free access to a machine to those who want to learn, completely fine. But $20.25 for this, respectfully, I will eat shit, chew on it, do a back flip while listening to Nicki Minaj's Pound The Alarm on a live broadcast if anyone buys this.

Do I gather from all the replies that this is actually a serious offer and not a joke? 😂

It's both a serious offer and also a joke! At the least, it's meant to be a fun offer!

    This is diabolical.

You "offer" is not fun, it's not cutesy, it's just a shitty attempt at trying to commercialize your total lack of IT skills.

I believe you have an abundance of time right now to learn new skills, the bare minimum would be to learn how to set up an LXC container, route ports to it via iptables, it's not difficult. You don't put in any effort into an "offer" that you ask $20.25/month for.

I wish you the best in improving your IT skills and coming up with a service that does provide equal value to the price you're asking.

    Kindest Regards

I like @Not_Oles and stay very polite and friendly and just say "Thanks, but thanks no, not even for half the the price".

  • @Not_Oles did you obtain the Patron Provider tag in the conventional manner?

My offer still stands, let me know if anyone was crazy to buy your stuff. In the meantime maybe read some LXC setup guides.

Wasn’t he a mod once who warned someone just because they thanked a comment he’d already warned?

People have asked about sharing root privileges. Sharing root is a tricky issue because some people are very against it while others really like the idea. I think sharing root is okay when the people using the server want shared root. So I do share root sometimes and also have not done it other times. I can't 100% promise shared root for this server, but I can give the idea a definite maybe. :) Best wishes!

    Hi @raindog308!

Membership in the kvm group seems to work.

My personal preference is for sharing the root, but, some people really don't like that.

    Happy weekend!

With no root, it’s a steal deal. SSH restricted to once every 2 hours would be even better to prevent abuse.

I had wondered if this had the same caveat as the docker group did, where users who have the group can trivially escalate to root permissions, but it looks like that isn't generally the case for kvm besides some old CVEs, so as long as your kernel is kept up to date this should be a surprisingly reasonable security posture, provided you follow other best practices like tightening permissions on home folders and preventing viewing running process cmdlines, if desired.

    Hi @Erisa!

    Thanks for your comment!

I looped through the interesting security update pages you linked searching for and finding entries about KVM. I can't help but imagine that there still might be more bugs waiting to be discovered and fixed.

For keeping the kernel up to date, I did bring the server up from Debian 12 to Debian sid unstable. I like Sid for Debian and rawhide for Fedoa. Maybe people running mission critical applications might prefer software which has been tested for longer, but this server is for learning and fun, not mission critical stuff.

Permissions on home folders can be changed by the owners, so that's easy. Preventing viewing of process command lines is a little tricky, because -- I think -- it can be nice to see what's going on, what makes up the load on the server, and what portion of the load is contributed by each process.

In case anybody might be interested, here's a link to a Linux kernel commit which added the ability to block view of process and group IDs: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/commit/?id=0499680a42141d86417a8fbaa8c8db806bea1201

Vivek Gite has a nice discussion: Linux hide processes from other users and ps command with hidepid option.

Funny story: One of the guys using one of my servers was accessing via MobaXterrm, which runs a script to grab all running processes for display in its interface. I saw the script flash by in ps aux, thought the guy was suspicious, and blocked his account. Talking with the MobaXterm guys, they explained that the script was a regular part of their setup. So I apologized to the user. Of course, MobaXterm is not open source, so I would hope that people try to avoid using it.

There is so much to learn about system administration!

If you have a use for it, I would be glad to give you a free account. Just send me an ed25519 ssh public key. And tell me whether you want root.

    Thanks again!

OP seems to be a kind guy but the offer is meaningless.

With $20.25 / month and just add a little more, one can get their own from Hetzner.
Or just buy a used PC with $20.25 / life time to do whatever you want at home.

I think this attempt only attract abusers. :s

There’s only 3 good reasons to host LET-grade things with a provider rather than at home:
    Bandwidth, SLA, separation

All this offers is bandwidth, whereas almost anything else you’ll find on here for that money offers all 3

Not a good deal, stick to hosting at home for this kind of fun project
