No, you're welcome to, if you know how to configure it.

A lot of shared hosting users enable DNSSEC in their registry but never copy the keys around, and then their domain breaks for most of the internet. We legit get 4 - 5 tickets a month about that very thing.

@yukikamiki said: he only problem I have encountered is that their support team doesn't really know how the system works.

That's fair. Things have changed a lot from 6 months ago while we settle into what works and what doesn't. I haven't updated the internal docs for some of the new hires so that's on me.

@yukikamiki said: Additionally, someone said they are receiving spam as the spammers bypassed spamexpert MX and sent directly to workspace.org, and the solution that Namecrane has given is setting up filter in SmarterMail on the customer's own.

This one is harder to do. Some users don't want to use Spamexperts and want to come direct. There's no easy switch inside of Smartermail to mark what domains allow direct and which don't.

The only option at the moment would be us automating the block rule we mentioned in ticket. Maybe that's what we do and just add a description of 'dont remove this' :P

any pointer how to properly setup dnssec? I have domain at CF and Porkbun.

This is fair and I totally see your point, but I think the wording on the website could convey this a bit better.

  • To be honest I switched back to self hosted Mailcow just because I didn't like much the SmarterMail software, or whatever it's called. Also I didn't like the formats when you export contacts and calendars. It's weird. But besides this I like the service more than MXroute personally.

  • Got the lifetime plan and has been using it for a month now, except that I cannot get one of my domains (a .li domain) DNS successfully resolved, everything works fine. As others mentioned, not a big fun of the UI, feels like something from 20 years ago, and some of the menu takes multiple clicks. IMO 8/10

The only thing that bugs me about Cranemail is that the controlpanel is a random mix of English and Swedish. And I mean the WHMCS panel, not the Smartermail itself.
Yes I am Swedish but my os is in English, my browser is in English, every setting known to man says English is my preferred language, and still half of the panel is in Swedish. I have no idea why and how it decided that I'm Swedish unless it looked at the billing information, but somehow it did and there seems to be no way to change that. Technically not a problems since I do speak Swedish, but it bugs me.

The product itself is awesome, I run both a US and a EU instance and both have been very good so far. Good reputation, good delivery, lots of features and competitive pricing.
I've occasionally experienced some minor delays when delivering emails, but we are talking 1 or 2 minutes which I do not see as a problem at all, if I need instant notification I do not use email.

  • To be honest, Smartermail is not bad and has a full range of features. However, they should make more efforts in UI design and user interaction. It is usable and covers common needs, but it certainly cannot be considered “easy to use.” I know this is a bit demanding, as it is normal for most companies of this size, but I really hope they can do better.

As for Cranemail itself? It offers a good price, good uptime and delivery rates, and good service—there’s nothing to complain about.

This reinforces my confidence in Fran and the company’s taste, as well as their commitment to continuing operations. It’s definitely worth buying.

Funky, let me know on that.

Would people like to have a roundcube interface for webmail only then? I could likely spin up https://rc.workspace.org and it'll just talk IMAP to the SM. It won't have calendars and contacts (maybe i could?) but would that solve some annoyance?

I'll fiddle with it over the next week or two and see what I can come up with :)

Maybe I can integrate CALDAV/CARDAV automagically.

Yeah I love roundcube. Sounds good.

    Anyway, my issues were:

Some 2fa emails wouldn’t come through before the 10 minute window given so I couldn’t login to stuff. But they’d arrive after about 20-40 minutes.

Native WebDAV not working. I don’t like rclone because I can’t seem to get a working shortcut on windows (it just repeats the command or runs in the background and nothing happens)

Can’t import iCloud emails. I don’t want to go back and forth looking for something, so that stopped me from properly using it yet for emails.

Are you using Spamexperts? Is this still happening?

They haven't added WEBDAV for files yet. We have added an FTP server though if that peaks your interest.

Did you get an error back? Does iCloud support IMAP? You might have to use an App password for it.

1 Yes, enabled, but I did go poke around to see if I could find it. I think I tried disabling it or something too and it didn’t help. Other emails came through fine.

2 That’s great but I mean no offence but why so long for something relatively simple I don’t get it lol, but like the roundcube suggestion could you not just install something else like cPanel and somehow merge it just to give us access?

3 Yeah iCloud supports IMAP. I think it’s an issue with smartermail itself. I’ve used the generated passwords and have set up my iCloud in many other clients manually fine (it works fine in that Only Office web mail client for reference) and I tried various combinations, spent ages on it actually lol.

Not sure how adding cPanel would sort WEBDAV...? For roundcube there's no reason to do that either. We didn't want to just bolt mail on top of DirectAdmin, we wanted a fully integrated suite.

Standalone RC is easy enough and we can allow users to brand it with their own domain w/ SSL, just like we do on https://workspace.org.

Are you on discord at all? We have a channel just for cranemail so I'd say ask in there. I'm certain others have pulled from iCloud before.

Sorry, to clarify anyone reading this, it’s a great service and great value for money it’s just I’m nitpicking on a few things. I’m even thinking about getting buying the EU one next month.

But yeah cPanel/whm still has “web disk” which is WebDAV? Or am I mistaken?

I have to admit the last time I checked all this was back in Feb then only just again today. I was actually looking for documentation on setting up rclone then saw the dc group, I’ll reach out on there or something.

    Thanks

    >

Sure, but it serves out of the users home directory. It wouldn't integrate into how SM works.

Our rclone implementation has been basically rewritten at this point and behaves a lot better. The FTPS is great and we'll get SFTP working soon too.

    or Snappymail :)

  • Everything worked great, quality with good support.

But now I am having some serious issue going on (I have a ticket in process trying to solve this but worth mentioning this issue)

Problem is almost every single email is getting rejected, even emails from NameCrane. Haven't touched any of the settings. Hope support will help out soon.

  • Yes, SnappyMail please. https://snappymail.eu
Think it’s a fork of rainloop which is a fork of roundcube.

    Its super lightweight.

    What’s the ticket id?

Did you have the domain in shared and then moved it to cranemail? Or maybe you moved from us to eu?

  • Hi @Francisco I asked about the IMAP / MAPI / EWS passwords not following the requirements set in More -> Domain Settings -> Password Requirements section back in April, and at the time you said it's likely a bug and you were going to raise it with SmarterMail. Did you have a chance to do that?

In case it helps as a reminder, I created Ticket #CRANE-12406 with some details and hope we'll have this fixed soon

    TIA

  • I have a question. Does the lifetime email have any conditions, like requiring me to log in to the control panel every few months to keep it active?

Totally agree here. My only complaints are with SmarterMail.

My biggest annoyance is that the "remember me" when logging in doesn't work. Everytime I return my OS from sleep it needs me to signin again. Could be my VPN is rotating IP's and SmarterMail is "remembering" only for the last IP address - but wish it was cookie based and just kept me in at all times.

Some other smaller issues with SmarterMail are that sometimes it requires popups to do something (like email search!)

Also wish that SmarterMail allowed OpenPGP and hosted key storage, like Roundcube does. That being said, I guess I could always just spin up my own Roundcube and point it to my mail domain. ;)

You're required to pay the invoice to get the service ;) Past that, follow the TOS in regards to spam, cold emails, etc, and you're good. No need to login to anything. Enjoy.

Not sure why they don't use modal's for some things. I've asked :)

spamexpert still has some issue,i need to login the console to make sure mail are delivered,or I have to check mail in spamexpert console.

Good, because the catchall works, and also I can reply the catchall email by using the same FROM.

For example I receive all emails into mailbox-user-at-something. Someone send email to myuser-at-something. In em client android, I can reply by using myuser-at-something instead of must using mailbox-user-at-something like in Gmail client did

Some spam message still go through my inbox, though

how?i want to do that too

If it quarantines an email you should get scout reports 3 times a day with removal links.
