I think that's a pretty decent idea. Could then call it a 'database wizard' of sorts. i'll play with the interface some today :)

As for backups, I was aiming for hourly, but I think for the initial build we'll aim for at minimum daily, but more likely 'every 4 hours'.

Other places do 'point in time recovery' via the binlogs, which I think we could do as well, but I don't think that's something I want to fiddle with on the initial product launch. For the price we're going to be charging I think daily/4h is more than fair.

    Feedback?

    Francisco

4 hours is definitely enough. You can provide backups of 2 hours or less on higher priced plans.

It would be really cool if I could save it to my CraneMail Email Hosting or Google drive on a regular basis! Support for WebDAV for regular or manual backups would also be cool!

Hmm. I don’t want to get too crazy on it. I think a wgetable JSON then people can automate it past that.

Probably have a /download/latest endpoint too.

    Francisco

In fact, a zip would be nice so that people can easily backup/re-import. The 1Panel panel I'm using has a similar design, and it's a pretty good and user-friendly experience.

Yep, we'll have direct links to the .gz files so people can pull those down. My thinking with the JSON is so people could have their own scripts automatically pull down backups w/o having to do it with mysqldump.

Backups are basically ready to go. I just need to finish the cleanup cron and a few visual bugs. Here's some snaps I just shared on discord:

We'll make the activity log prune the last XX days of entries.

For backup scheduling we'll guarantee daily at minimum but will aim to offer more (every 4~6 hours is probably good enough as usage grows).

Too add to this/update my usage. Been using this to see how well it can handle being used in MC servers for any DB needs. We'll I found no problems or complaints. Only error was the disabling accounts that was reported and fixed.

Good stuff :) I should have public backup access out in the next little bit, just adding some table searching/sorting to help with hunting through backups.

With this the product will likely be 'feature complete' and not due for any major additions until we get more feedback & gauge demand. We'll add more locations (probably an SQL in each public crane DC + Kansas).

Backups are now live! Give it a whirl.

We've queued it for daily for now.

Once LU gets to do a beta run.

Tweaked the 'restore' page since people didn't like the radio's:

    Some updates.

    • SSL has been enabled (though no enforced) for connections to the MySQL server.
    • We expect the Netherlands offload SQL to be up running this week, pending the DirectAdmin shared nodes are first moved.
    • Work has begun on a UK offload SQL.

We expect the NL beta to last for a couple weeks and then we'll button this up and put it out for sale.

    $0.50/GB, billed yearly. 10GB minimum.

Any chance offload SQL will be available at Los Angeles or Northern Virginia (although I guess it’s close enough to Las Vegas and New York respectively)

Nope, just the DC's you mentioned.

Anything else requires we put up more colo & IP space to support them.

At the moment offload SQL is costing us ~$0.00/month to operate. Minus a little bit of hardware we purchased there isn't licensing or additional colocation required since we're just reusing locations we already have gear in.

Kansas is the exception to the rule I guess, but we use it as our backups/DR location, so it still doesn't cost us anything additional.

Just my 2 cents. Should the SQL server names be lv-mariadb01.offloadsql.com instead of lv-mysql01.offloadsql.com given you're offering MariaDB?

Although MariaDB is largely compatible with MySQL, it's no longer designed to be a drop-in replacement for MySQL. They will end up being two distinct DBs. And this could be confusing in the future.

Probably a good idea :) Just incase we roll out MySQL 8.x servers too. I'll bring it up with Mike.

@Francisco when it moves out of beta, minimum billing is for 10gb (0.5$/ gb) = $5/ year, correct?

    That's the expectation.

We'll likely increment in 5GB bundles.

I will bump this. We will try to sneak in an offer thread for it once cranemail eu gets its own run. Have to be careful we don’t run afoul :)

Can I clear Tasks logs? It would be nice if I could pause the automatic backups, or delete the backups.

Tasks list is for some sort of accountability.

As for disabling/pausing backups, I guess I’ll just add an option to the database creation option to enable/disable automatic backups. Means I’ll need a new “edit” option but easy enough.

Yes but it'll be a bit. We would have to ship hardware there and I don't want to do that until we can prove the product is worth it.

Offload SQL's up in Netherlands, come test it out!

    https://namecrane.com/store/networking/managed-databases

We'll be ending the BETA on June 1st. When that happens all packages will be swapped to the cheapest plan ($5.00/year). You can then choose to keep it or cut it loose.

We'll have additional space available at $5/year per 10GB additional storage. Backups do not count account that usage, but snapshots WILL.
