  • I find it incredibly ironic how folks who “don’t care” added a whole 2 pages to this thread. It’s fine not to care about the situation; if you don’t, good for you. But to profess that you don’t care and then bump the thread to the top of LET for over an hour? Please.

  • This thread has...grown since I last read it.

    Well.

Let me divulge my thoughts, since that seems to be a trend now.

Have some individuals started taking charitygate a bit too lightly, and would I personally go as far as they have with the sarcasm and jokes? Probably not. If this is a serious matter, as you on the "red team" say that it is, then treat it seriously. Don't flirt with going "all out" if your motivation really isn't about ego boosting, since that's a pretty ambiguous statement designed to stir up intrigue and drama. The website already exists, so as long as it stays true to its purpose, I don't see a problem with it.

On the other hand, have some people on this thread gotten overly defensive of their opinions and stated the same thing over and over for nearly three forum pages? Yeah. Just let the issue rest. You made your case, and the people on the red team are going to keep posting no matter what; you're just making yourself look worse by arguing with them. If they have an ego problem, like you all say they do, then don't stoop to play their game.

A compromise: instead of bumping the thread with updates and suggestions, members of the red team could convene privately in DMs or, if there are more than five of you, somewhere outside of LET like Discord or Matrix. Outsiders who wish to contribute info can DM them here on LET, or post to the threads. That keeps the threads quieter and, if you can commit to this solution, would demonstrate that your operation truly isn't about attention or ego.

    Ok ok fair lol

I mean the thing about "going all out" was more in reference to the fact that I have a good feeling I know who CharityHost is, but I don't want to bring his actual name into play because it'd put the actual individual at needless risk and my focus is on his actions and business

But I'll think about the Discord thing...anyone who wants to join can DM me their username (or just a note that says you want to join).

Nothing major, right?

    Yeah, I'd say nothing major.

    • the whole "scanning files" thing I think is a case of a host that runs scans because of their TOS, which is not unusual. A lot of shared hosting providers do that. In this case, he strayed into a private space - though of course, with an FTP space, how do you really know? I mean, it is available to anyone with a password. I suspect CH's scripts were written to scan everything and perhaps shouldn't have been. But, you know, CH doesn't allow porn, @bdspice put porn on their servers...meh. Weak sauce as far as pumping your first in the air over civil rights.

    • I can't count how many providers over the years have offered free service, credits, cash etc. if you write a nice review. It's certainly not a good practice but CH is hardly unique in this.

    • the root password/VM entry as I recall it wasn't exactly black and white because the user was distributing malware. Maybe I'm just old, because back in the OpenVZ days, it was safe to assume hosts could enter your VM whenever they wanted to (it was a simple command) and you'd never know. CH should have just term'd the user instead of entering his VM, though to be fair I haven't read CH's TOS so maybe they "reserve the right" as they said on LET. (BTW, I've read a lot of TOSes over the year and I don't remember any that promise not to enter a user's VM.)

    • the "take this down because US code section blah blah" was pretty silly.

Overall, CH strikes me more as incompetent/inexperienced than malicious. He definitely could have handled multiple situations better.

I'm sympathetic to @Mumbly 's opinion. Deserved a thread, sure. People are free to form their own opinions and weigh in, for sure. I personally wouldn't have carried as far as making a dedicated web site. Heck, when I made a YouTube documentary telling the entire story of HostSolutions' involucration, some people crucified me, and a lot more people lost money from HS than from anything that CH did.

But anyway, that's just my opinion. People are free to disagree, weigh events differently, and draw different conclusions. It's all the buzz in the community so I shared it on LEB as noteworthy. Viva LET.

His business registration is linked at the bottom of his site, so it's hardly a secret.

@MannDude owns the registrar so you are safe.

I think about this at the first place so might grab it today too

    Edit, from IncogNET Client Portal,

The ability to order new domain names has been temporarily disabled while we make some updates on our end. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please check back at a later time.

Give me another day or two. Will be available again shortly, just needed to make some updates and it was easier to just pause new domain sales for a short period. :)

Greed, ego, sociopathy and stupidity. Concoction which crash any business, sooner or later.

It reminds me gvh saga a lot. There is “for immediate release” vibe. But hey, let’s calm down, wait for natural events happen, do not force it with mocery.

The guy made some silly mistakes, and he clearly lacks social skills, but this has been going on way too long just for the amusement of some LET dicks… Come on, it's a person's livelihood you're playing with.

i've had thoughts like that too. and at heart, i'm a man of mercy. this person was repeatedly advised to stop escalating and perhaps reflect on his own behavior. nothing came of it. instead, this person escalated more and more, insulted users here, told lies, etc. (all known and documented). that's why my sympathy is very limited at the moment.

You don't get it, do you? This has nothing to do with us "seeing the severity of CharityHost's misdeeds differently". I didn't even talk much about his misdeeds. I'm talking about you, a few of you. How long will you keep following him? Stalking him? Doing everything in your power to destroy his business, his livelihood, now, when he's already banned from the forum?
Yes, he may deadpool, that's true. But a few of you are surely doing everything in your power to ruin him even more, as if he hasn't already done enough damage to himself.

You're hiding behind the usual phrases like "My sympathy is for his customers and those affected by his behavior" and "transparency" as if you genuinely care. But we're long past that. What you're really doing is beating a dead horse for your own amusement, for your own fun. At least be honest about it. Admit you're doing this for your entertainment, instead of dragging it on just because you're getting approval from a few like-minded people.

You see, my post isn't about CharityHost, it's about you, a few of you, who are hiding behind standard phrases and pretending you're still doing good work, while the guy is more or less finished and most likely just trying to keep his business alive despite everything.

Maybe I'm too weak, too sympathetic, that's possible. But come on, after all these weeks, people are making websites and who knows what else about him? If you only knew everything that has gone through this forum, you'd realize how insignificant CharityHost is in comparison and how ridiculous your crusade looks now that everything has already been said and done.

  • Well when you put it that way, rather than “I’m smarter than all of you”, you make some very convincing points. I also think that it’s a little excessive and unnecessary to have two CH threads on the front page.

But on the other hand people are free to spend their time however they want. I can only speak for myself that I pulled back from posting about CH a day after they were banned since I saw the matter as now closed, but I suppose others find their continued behavior “interesting” (to use a neutral term).

    To each their own way.

I said that on purpose (I know better than that), but only after everything had already been said. So how come you only remember that part? And you even changed it a bit, giving it a different meaning - I never said "all of you", but responded to a certain person as a response to his pretending as if everyone didn't already know that we're doing this on LET for fun. :-)
The posts before that statement were no different from the one above.
