@yabarg you do not have the full context and you are claiming things that are incorrect.

    1. The data was public. You can see it with a curl command using --resolve. (it's not public now, was moved to a private folder while the material is private on the free FTP account now, active, hosted but not public.

So CH offers free subdomain pointers to public_html for its customers? That's so charitable, wow. I assume all customers can benefit from this free subdomain?

They also scan your files its like a managed service for free :D

@FAT32 do you trust this person with your PII?

@CharityHost_org I did some research. Are you’re based out of Nevada/Wyoming? If yes, you did violate privacy laws, there are rights you are obligated to respect in this country. Esp for a private collection and not on a public website for redistribution. Burden of proof it being illegal falls on you because you can download the content when paying membership sites and keep it afterwards.

Following laws come into play against CharityHosts actions regardless of AUP/TOS. These protect consumer rights from snooping.
    1. Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA)
    2. Federal Trade Commission Act
    3. The Wiretap Act (applies to all digital communication and media forms) - you aren’t even the government so you have less leeway
    4. Wyoming Consumer Protection Act
    5. And weirdly enough this one has history of being used against cloud providers it seems - Stored Communications Act (SCA)

Finally I have some time to read about this drama, I would say morally (and maybe legally too but IANAL) it is being seen as unacceptable for service providers to look at non-public data. I am sure most members in this community cares a lot about privacy, thus explaining the anger.

I understand the frustration on both sides (provider and consumer), but I would argue that both sides have their issues. Provider might have gone a little bit too far, while the consumer might have not read the AUP properly which caused the outcome today.

I don't really want to repeat this but I am sure a lot of people have suggested that the best way forward for CharityHost should be just own up the mistake and it should lead to a better outcome. LET can be forgiving, all the best and hope this issue doesn't happen again.

The trust has been lost and it will take years to recover again, hope this serves as a lesson not to CharityHost but also new providers venturing into this business.

For us from the admin/mod team, it is not that we don't moderate this thread (we actually discuss about this actively in our internal thread) but we are actually hoping to see a happy ending - though it doesn't seem to be the case. There also isn't a lot of meaningful discussion in the last few pages.

Regarding to ban or not, we don't have any conclusion yet but so far we don't have strong enough reason to do so.

  • @CharityHost_org said:
We were transparent about the issues and admitted to what happened to the customers first and foremost. The one customer is long time and keeps buying from us. They understood our mistake and accepted our apologies. The second one did not and was rude and demeaning. That we will answer to insults and toxicity, we do not tolerate further. GOLDEN RULE. The exception was @nohavps adding flames to fire to new hosts, @CharityHost_org is not the only one getting that from this host. Again, we loathe insults and toxicity and own up to the issues. The incessant attacking from .001% of the active members at LET got the answers too.

    This is funny though.

sorry, yes I am, the second is much much funnier.

CharityHost_org I did some research. Are you’re based out of Nevada/Wyoming?

I dont think it is that simple.

Incorporated with an agent in one state by an organizer in another state with a principal office/mailing address in a third. And the data can be hosted anywhere although I think he mentioned the location of the servers in this thread. Probably none of this unusual. Mailing address is probably out of date. Wish I could have timed the market that well

My guess is he has the tech skills but the people skills we've seen may keep him hopping around / remote work / working for himself and moonlighting as a charity case. The servers are probably solid. Maybe rebrand, reincorporate, learn from the mistakes.

Of course I could be mistaken about all of this

That's an honest comment. Have office in Nevada, incorporated in Wyoming. It's not unusual to incorporate in another state. Servers strategically hosted in Houston/Spring TX

We wont rebrand, reincorporate, just deal with the situation. We own up to the issues and have answers for them. 1st customer issue was resolved and is a long term customer keeps buying. 2nd customer with a giveaway free FTP Storage account violated AUP once, we suspended, then unsuspended to try to level with him. Asked for him to post that his account was unsuspended, but he continued to be demeaning and insulting us by tickets and public for vengeance. So we decided to cut the thread there with this customer, gave him 48+ hours to take his data and go.

CharityHost.org is fine and wont disappear just because a customer does not respect us, takes it to this forum posting up to a small number of active members in this forum that move mob effect mass attacks specially when they are full of insults, derision, and mocking.

@CharityHost_org , I got this error when placing an order. There is no captcha at all.

Please correct the following errors before continuing:

Complete the captcha and try again.

  • @biny Please reach out on our site when having issues. So, the captcha integration, we do not manage that, it's just an integration. Try this:

    1. Disable browser plugins: adblockers etc
    2. Use incognito/private window with no plugins
    3. Empty cookies/cache
    4. Use another browser with the same steps above
    5. Perhaps disconnect from proxy IP or VPN, it may be blocking due to that.

Let me know how that goes.

  • binybiny Member

    Thanks for the reply.
I tried all 3 browser in their private/incognito windows, no extension, no vpn,
All 3 have same error and no one ever show any captcha.

Can you check your captcha integration?

@CharityHost_org , I found the issue in your transaction workflow.
Your regular new user sign up process takes the potential user to a captcha screen to verify. However, when a new user tries to make a purchase and create a new account at the same time, the transaction workflow does not jump to new user signup screen.

So you may just disable new account option and force user to create a new account first, as a work around until you guys fix the workflow.

@hyperblast said: and none of them had public_html.

You dont understand the product. These are web hosting accounts with HTTP and HTTPS public_html available if the customer chooses to host static assets. FTP storage is the primary use case, we just have the secondary use case of public assets hosting available and served by LiteSpeed, and when you add static assets in public_html they are publicly hosted without PHP, mysql, etc.

That isn't an FTP service, that's just another shared hosting package. There's no difference, you also get FTP for shared hosting to upload files.

You fucked up making calling shared hosting as FTP.

Where I live in Canada, peeping through the windows, even as a landlord, could be considered voyeurism/peeping

    https://justice.gc.ca/eng/cons/voy/part1_context.html

    I believe this would fall under a privacy offence;

"With regard to accused persons, the section 7 liberty interest has been held to include a right to privacy. As Justice La Forest commented in R. v. Dyment[19], "privacy is at the heart of liberty in a modern state." From a constitutional perspective, it can be said that privacy surfaces as a constitutionally protected right in the context of both sections 7 and 8 of the Charter regarding accused persons. With regard to complainants and private individuals generally, there appears to be a constitutionally inspired recognition that a basic right to privacy is an element of living in a free and democratic society. Nonetheless, it cannot be said that the Charter provides citizens with a general, constitutionally protected right to privacy.

The right to privacy is expressly recognized by various international instruments[20] which extend to all persons the right to be protected from arbitrary or abusive interference with their privacy. The rights enshrined in these international instruments are expected to inform policy choices regarding the right to privacy in the domestic context.

In relationships between individuals, privacy rights are protected in the civil context in some jurisdictions through provincial legislation. To date, privacy legislation exists in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Newfoundland. The privacy rights of Quebec residents are protected through the Civil Code of Quebec and also by section 5 of the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms."

I'd imagine something similar in many other countries.

Dude, you have the right to look out the window of your house, it's your window and your house. It's not against the law.

How would you know its prostitution without doing something like peeping in their windows :D

What if he just wanted to bring his friend over?

Because I saw prostitutes coming in and out of my rented house (for example) and my neighbors told me about it. My neighbors and I saw them quite by chance, we didn't peek.

Do prostitutes wear uniforms in your country? I'm curious what signs they wear to be identified from the house over by looking.

    Fucking ban this douche already.

Well if you already have a login and have a cookie in your browser that might be the issue. You setup a new account while you are checking out from the cart. That should be working fine. You can also login with your existing account during checkout.

"Not trying to spam, just peacefully ask you about your unethical business practices"

Such as when you are going to address the review manipulation, Andrew.

This screenshot from a DM I received

    https://imgur.com/a/Qx8UiXn

shows that you ask for "the url to your 5 star review."

If your intention was not to incentivize, if not outright demand a perfect review, then why phrase it like this? And let's be real. Who in their right mind would post anything but a 5-star review, now that 1) they know how you respond to any criticism of your services, 2) the review is tied to their account and real identity?

BTW it'd be a great idea if you, who are reading this, took a look at this dude's comment history, and why he's so desperate to silence criticism.

And now he's dragging his old threads into it, too. Wow he's desperate.
