Thank you! Keen to get your formal opinion from the logs and I will try your suggestion.
I am trying to send business email to a company who uses your service, only for it to bounce every time with this error. Visiting your contact page tells me it's for registered clients only, I was forced to post publicly because I can't reach you otherwise.
Respectfully, I understand fighting spam is an uphill battle, but to reduce false positives on an ambiguous error code down to being "mail from someone’s infected laptop on their Comcast ISP" seems very rude. The mail server I was using is mail.ghostbox.cc, which is specifically pay-walled to prevent abuse like that which would come from residential botnets. I'm curious why it's blacklisted as there is no issue with any other mail server.
John
Respectfully, spammers (I know because they're using email spam botnets to perform the attacks) are DDOS attacking our servers in response to how effective it is, and false positive reports are down to 1 per day which is the lowest they've ever been relative to how many customers we have. Asking me to throw that out (or creating social consequences for not doing so, as I believe someone else was trying to do) because someone here is exaggerating the negative impact is rude to all of my customers. You've reported one sender failure, and I've already taken care of that for you so feel free to send the email again.
And feel free to just reach out to me and say "Hey I need this problem taken care of" instead of adding to one user's exaggerations as though reporting one single instance of this is justification for their suspicious assumption that it's the root cause of every single real report that anyone might have about a perceived issue that should be investigated individually. That is the conversation thread you were following/quoting there.
I'm going to be defensive here because I've solved a huge chunk of a problem that my customers were asking me to solve, and it's very apparent to me that bad actors are going to be lobbying against it in every way they can think to. I won't wait for them to try the social method if they haven't yet, I'll try to cut that off as a viable path beforehand. It's quite clear that whoever I've upset by blocking so much spam, they have a good bit of money and resources.
I'm not saying you are a bad actor, but rest assured if you buy into some narrative that I'm rejecting a ton of legitimate email when I'm not, they'll be here to reinforce it with exaggerated reports soon as well. So I will not let this narrative propagate, because it's not true. I rejected something no one else did, sure, but I am not rejecting a ton of legitimate email. No one out there is rejecting zero legitimate email. At least, unlike Google who rejects an absolute ton of legitimate email daily (regardless of whether or not it's the same legitimate email that anyone else rejects), you can talk to me.
Now that the thread is revived, I'll try again.
Any guidance?
Only way I could think of is custom ACL. I don’t do those but you can find a way into one of my recipient rejecting ACLs with a pull request here: https://github.com/mxroute/da_server_updates/blob/master/exim/spam_recipients
You couldn’t control the message but they would get a bounce from their mail server.
Well sincerely I did not intend to cause social consequences. In fact, I will even attest that indeed the email went through after re-sending - I appreciate that you looked into it!
It is simply a frustration of ambiguous error which led me to this thread. However, I can understand likewise your frustration with such complaints. Clearly, I am unfamiliar with interpersonal beef with others here making trouble for you, so I have nothing further to add to the discussion.
Thank you for assisting and have a nice rest of your day,
John
Am I missing something here, wouldn't DA e-mail forwarders for those addresses set to the :fail: target work for just this scenario?
That's how I do catch-all currently, hard bouncing the obvious info@ sales@ etc. along with some specific addresses that got onto persistent spam lists, everything else then gets filtered by sieve.
You might be right. I don’t spend much time there, it’s nice to delegate those things to DA and not think about them.
I couldn't resist picking up one of these deals a couple of weeks ago (the medium one at $30/3 years) and must say I am very impressed with the service so far. My custom domain email was previously running on a plan from a local ISP which was attractive to start with at just over $1/month, but I soon found the limitations with only 1 GB of storage being included in that price, and only one domain being allowed, along with arbitrary restrictions such as the lack of DKIM unless you agreed to transfer your whole DNS over to them for an additional monthly fee (which I was naturally not prepared to do).
MXroute has been a brilliant upgrade to this, with 25× the storage, the option to add my assortment of other domains at no extra cost going forward, and best of all a massive improvement in spam filtering compared to the old provider. And on top of all that, it's even slightly cheaper than my old setup!
Set up was pretty straightforward too, and I especially liked the built-in imapsync which made migrating all my old emails really easy.
Thank you to @jar for offering this great service.
This
Google can silently dev-null multiple gmail-to-gmail emails after you manually send one, which they for some reason considered "suspicious".
All that for a single recipient, with whom you already have long conversation history.
We were accepting and then silently deleting all of the email from your server because 3 years ago a server with a similar domain was sending us spam..
Their IT team wouldn't acknowledge or look into it until the employee not getting those emails sent it up, eventually to the president and VP because there were about investment portfolios in the millions..
That was probably the most difficult email delivery issue I've dealt with to date.. At least someone got in trouble for that one.
Sounds like you have something misconfigured.
Is there a feature to back up emails in case my client wants to return to using the previous service, such as email on cPanel?
Not directly. My recommendation: https://www.mailbackupx.com/
Hi jar, can you check ticket number #561408 for me? I already answered your question but still no response.
People keep asking me for more of the Small package. Well I have it configured to add stock back when a service gets terminated. I doubt this many will ever be available in 1 day again, there are 4 available now.
There are also 4 of these available: https://accounts.mxroute.com/?cmd=cart&action=add&id=262
What's wrong with creating forwarders for those specific addresses that have a destination of :fail: instead of :blackhole:? I just tested and the sender gets a "Mail Delivery System: Mail delivery failed" error message
Ohh not again. One day I’ll be there to grab one
same
Does mxroute do account transfers? I don't wanna open a ticket
Sparingly. In other words it’s fine for individuals but I don’t want anyone making a business out of reselling promos and requesting bulk transfers as that overwhelms and creates unnecessary overhead. It sucks that I have to specify.
Fair and reasonable.
U had a plan from the BF deals wanna transfer? I missed the funny code jar give 1 or 2 days ago lmao
At the same time you also missed 4 small packages that were just restock, lol
Yes I saw I missed that toooooo
I have a small package available for transfer if anyone needs it, just drop me a PM
Yesterday I got a discount for the lifetime package.
And now the bf 2024 25gb package, 10 dollars/3 years is not used, anyone interested?
dm you
Has anyone transferred a lifetime package?xD
Jars gonna regret his last post. lol
