Also, lately a lot of people is kind of hesitant to deal with the US at all, things being as they are.

I recently benchmarked servers in Russia and hardly found some providers that block RU ips. I thought it would be blocked everywhere.

Verdict - mail admins are too lazy/tolerant to deal with politics :D

I am very green in mail handling. I don't understand the difference between US and EU

If I have some domains and what I want is to be able to receive/send mail using them

What is the difference between having an account in the US or in the EU?

People want EU for legal reasons (GDPR). Be it their country require it by law or they just want additional privacy protections.

Is it possible to use nextcloud for the file storage ? It will be easier to manage the files with nextcloud.

I can't make rclone work reliably neither with Kopia nor Duplicati. I'm sad.

Hop on the discord and post in the Crane channels - that's where we've had people beta testing and someone might be able to help https://discord.gg/tRbJjyVvmj

Other people responded on the mail point.

One of the main benefits for EU would be the cloud storage use case if you're in/closer to Europe - transfer speeds will be better than US west coast.

Only for read only. It can’t upload to it from cranemail, but it can link and such.

I am thinking about using the nextcloud client, instead of the current workspace.org web client.

  • It is possible to setup outgoing marketing emails via some third party provider like sendgrid or likes of it that allows that kind of emails from within the SM?

You'd have to signup with that service and set that up with them. This isn't a service we're going to try to middle man or offer.

    Francisco

  • Yeah, I agree if we sign up with them, is there a way we can use if from inside the SM by setting outbound to go through what ever service we chose to work with. That was my question

We can do that on a per domain basis, but if you end up sending emails that these other places flag as spam, they'll likely also flag our IP's/nodes as 'spam sources'.

I don't want to get political, but is there a potential disadvantage of hosting in Europe due to the risk of a police raid on the datacenter?

I don't think i've heard of any such raids happening in Netherlands over... email. It's one thing if we're hosting IPTV or something, but this is email.

Unless you mean a US raid? I mean, I guess we still have lavabit on the brain?

  • The only thing that's on my brain is when @jar argued against EU hosting, I think for the reason I mentioned.

I'm sure he has his reasons/concerns. I got an idea of what it could be too, and I can assure you we'll be OK :)

  • Hi @Francisco, wonder if this is something to be concerned about (or even really true)... In Apple Mail when right-clicking on any mailbox then select "Get Account Info" a window pops up with information about all configured email accounts on the computer. I have a mix of Exchange (CraneMail) and IMAP (elsewhere) accounts, and while the IMAP ones show SSL is ON, the Exchange accounts show SSL as being off. Now I can't imagine Exchange uses unencrypted communication to the server, can you please confirm this is just a side effect of using the Exchange protocol?

Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about

I expect the crate to leave next week. We got bit by some things being back ordered at Supermicro by a week or more.

    Francisco

Waiting for the release so i can switch with my already bought lifetime plan to the EU location

Have they confirmed they will migrate US plans to EU?

    We won't.

A single user I offered to cancel their service as a credit so they can order EU.

We won't migrate users. We won't give 'temporary services to migrate', or anything like that. That's all just a ton of extra administrative work on our end.

    If you want EU, wait.

EAS requires a valid SSL, it won't communicate over HTTP.

So I should simply ignore what Apple Mail tells me about SSL being off for the Exchange accounts?

Yes. You can lookup Microsoft's own documentation for EAS and see that a valid SSL should be required.

If you can send me an uncensored image in a ticket I'll make sure we're all good.
