Microsoft 365 subscriptions come with 60 mins of skype call to landline numbers each month, I wonder if that'll be available on Teams...

I think well find out soon. Keep getting that blue banner at the top.

Thx Josh, checked the site, seems more geared towards gamers though ya?

eh possible. But Teamspeak can be used for whatever. It's been around for quite some time.
I'm not sure though if you can host it yourself anymore.

    Ok tracking thx.

For anyone who uses Skype, what alternatives are you looking @ to replace it?

How are you handling your years of contacts, conversations etc.

    Thanks

Phone... We also like to meet at the pub. Plenty of cheaper options though. That bar tab adds up.

Slack for company stuff, but it’s not really a complete alternative, but for internal comms and SOME external (guests to a workspace) it’s great

right, but what is one that is used wide spread like Skype is/was?

    Widespread where?

In APAC, WhatsApp is more widely used.

Yup def see different regions use it different apps..

Signal is an alternative to Telegram and I found it's good, already moved all my boys chat from Telegram to Signal for moar privacy, I found out that Telegram somehow allow our govt to access chat data in case they needed.

So we moved to Signal xD

    dang, that is not good.

For Video live meetings, you have Vivo LTD (lifetime license), which includes automatic transcription and audio and video recording in Plan 4. You have two months to try it out, and ask for a refund if it doesn't suit you.

MS teams. The most complete integration if you use ms products. Otherwise just use matrix. Discord is for children, slack is for soyboys.

lol, okay thanks, can you link me to matrix?

    tafak... https://matrix.org/

That looks cool, but how many people are using that?

Virola.io for business communication. Not exactly a direct alternative to Skype, since it's self-hosted, but it offers more privacy than any cloud service.

right, but same issue with other ones is how many people are on it?

    Skype is solid man :)

  • Honestly most of these recommendations are internet to internet.

Skype has $3 per month USA numbers that don’t come up as spam when you call people. Any real alternatives to this specific solution?

This benefit of the Microsoft 365 subscription was removed, so the now Skype has zero minutes of calls

    Ya that's annoying.

    Signal, Threema, SimpleX

It’s private unlike Discord and Telegram.

Signal is private ya but you have to put in the number which is not ideal. I checked out Threema, that one is pretty cool, and has 11 million users, might check that one out. Thx

You can hide your username now, this was released a year ago or something. If you’re not comfortable with using your own number you could use services such as SMSPool.

Threema isn’t really used that much outside of Switzerland from my experience. Signal has a much bigger user base.

What's your experience with these (e.g., cross-platform support, resource usage, UX, particularly for video talks)?

To me preferring an open-source alternative with the possibility of self-hosting is a no-brainer, but I'm yet to try any of the above (I dislike calls anyway; it's always other people sending invites and most of them just use what "everyone else uses").

Jitsi reminds me a lot of Google Meet. It just works without being fancy, it does what it's supposed to without being annoying in any way. It does require some resources when you get to multiuser video chat, but so does everything else. If you need a solution where you can just send a link to someone outside your organization and have them join a meeting, this is what you need.

Mattermost is like Slack or Teams, I think it actually started because someone was pissed at Slack for some reason and decided to make their own Slack. I like Mattermost, it's perfect if you need a place for your team to collaborate. What I really don't like is that lately they have been removing features from the open source version and started to put stuff behind pay walls, it feels like they will be closed source pretty soon if it keeps up. I really really like Mattermost and I've been using it for 10+ years, but it feels like it's time to move.
