Yeah but then he said 1080p, so I can't be sure.

I do 4K remuxes too, but for the majority of releasing content I stick to 1080p encodes. At the moment having everything in 4K is too expensive in terms of storage. My primary Plex server (with primarily 1080p where I've been able to get that) sits at 114 TB.

Probably a stupid question, but how do you know if it is the igpu or cpu which is doing the transcoding? I'm running it on my ks le b now, and each time I stream 4K, the cpu usage is like 15-25% (E3 1245 v6)

Plex will tell you if it's using hardware transcoding, but there are a few gotchas.

    • Your host needs the drivers installed for it, not to mention some server motherboards don't even let you utilize the iGPU (apparently).
    • It needs to have access to the iGPU. If you're running it in a Docker container, you need to mount/forward/whatever the iGPU device.
    • You need Plex Pass for hardware transcoding.
    • You might have to manually enable the hardware transcoding in the server settings (under "Transcoder" if you do it via Plex web UI).

    now run it on hetzner

    regards

Actually surprised that Hetzner doesn't bitch about it. I think Plex banned Hetzner IPs from their servers as people used it for this purpose.

I don't think Hetzner cares until they get an abuse report.

But besides clients streaming from my Plex server (< 30 people total), everything goes through some VPN of some kind, so...

I don't struggle with this, but it might be because I have an iGPU that supports HDR and I grab from release groups that do DoVi/HDR hybrids (aka DoVi with HDR fallback).

This is the way. Hell yea bruddha!

    V6 don’t have a igpu bruv

    Fanny enough it has: https://www.intel.de/content/www/de/de/products/sku/97473/intel-xeon-processor-e31245-v6-8m-cache-3-70-ghz/specifications.html?wapkw=E3 1245 v6

    Intel® HD Graphics P630

wait until u find out u got a supermicro motherboar dwhich physically doesnt provide voltage to the igpu

    That's some Low End shit.

its alright i dont mind transcoding completely on the cpu

Plex will tell you if it's using hardware transcoding, but there are a few gotchas.

    • Your host needs the drivers installed for it, not to mention some server motherboards don't even let you utilize the iGPU (apparently).
    • It needs to have access to the iGPU. If you're running it in a Docker container, you need to mount/forward/whatever the iGPU device.
    • You need Plex Pass for hardware transcoding.
    • You might have to manually enable the hardware transcoding in the server settings (under "Transcoder" if you do it via Plex web UI).

    now run it on hetzner

    regards

That's what I do bitch, why do you think I said:

At the moment I have a ridiculously expensive set up via a provider.

Guess what, I don't need a premade Plex image with a VPN built-in either:

    services:
        vpn:
            container_name: plex-vpn
            image: jordanpotter/wireguard
            cap_add:
                - NET_ADMIN
                - SYS_MODULE
            sysctls:
                net.ipv4.conf.all.src_valid_mark: 1
                net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6: 0
            volumes:
                # Your WireGuard configuration file. Can be from any provider that allows you to generate WireGuard configurations for connections (e.g. Mullvad, AirVPN)
                # The VPN service does not need to support port forwarding.
                - ./wg-config.conf:/etc/wireguard/vpn.conf
            ports:
                # Expose the Plex port locally, so the host can reverse proxy it. In my case I have NGINX installed directly on the host.
                # If you run NGINX Proxy Manager or similar, you will likely have to figure out a different solution
                - "127.0.0.1:32400:32400"
            restart: unless-stopped
