I guess this is the correct place to ask my question.

I tried to reinstall OS with custom image but always end up with a boot loop.

    Here's my steps:

    1. Reinstallation -> ISO images -> Netboot.xyz
    2. Click on "Boot from ISO"
    3. Go to VNC and complete installation with this partitions
      • root /
      • swap /swap
      • boot /boot
    4. Finish installation and reboot
    5. Boot loop happens and I cannot get into my OS

Tried remove the Netboot.xyz from CD/DVD Disc Image File but boot loop continues.

The only way to fix this is to reinstall from OS templates (the wait time is around 15-20 minutes), and thankfully I can access my machine again.

    Any help is appreciated!

Instead of booting from ISO, you could boot from GRUB or iPXE
    https://netboot.xyz/docs/category/booting-methods

In fact I've never done this other than booting from a normal mount of ISO. Maybe it's time to look into this, have you tried this (Grub or iPXE) from Host-C panel?

I didn't need netboot with Host-C but have used GRUB or iPXE to boot it with other providers when the ISO doesn't work or is outdated

    Here is instruction for iPXE
On VPSes that use KVM, you can usually connect to the VPS via VNC, reboot it, press escape while rebooting to get a boot menu, then select the iPXE option. Once iPXE has started, press Ctrl-B and follow the instructions above.

For QEMU you can use an image or ISO to install standard Linux distro and then set it up to boot into netboot.xyz
    https://netboot.xyz/docs/booting/grub

Thank you so much, I will definitely try this!

Also if are using the netboot ISO and it is stuck in a loop, instead of rebooting from within you could try to remove the disk and shut down the server, then use the control panel to start it again

Thing is when boot loop occured, I couldn't even power off or stop the server it gives an error like this "Message: Can't lock file '/var/lock/qemu-server/lock-1931.conf"

  • I recently (4d ago) wanted to reset my VPS there and thought that I would want to further customize my main partitions, use btrfs with subvolumes + encryption, and what not.

Ended just like you described and could not even go back to the templated image, had to open a ticket. The message from "Stuart" about that problem was:

Yes, we are Aware of this issue, it is from the module.
It will be fixed in the upcoming update of the provisioning module

I didn't ask further if/when this module would be updated, just gave up customizing :hushed:

GRUB does not even show (yes I enabled boot timeout) up when booting.

I tried netboot.xyz too and failed getting an address. Can PXE boot specifying IP somehow? There was no autoconfig on my server, I think it is made manually from support/cloud-config magic.

Thanks so much for this! Now that it's clear they're aware and is going to fix it which is great, wouldn't mind waiting for them to figure it out

If I knew this earlier I wouldn't had submitted a ticket to bother them but I had closed the ticket myself so they won't need to spend time on yet another similar question lol.

Guess I will stick with the preset template for now until later😎 All in all I'm still happy with the deals I got from them and remain a satisfied customer!

Yes, this is something that is haunting us since we use ModulesGarden. Long story, will get a fix soon.

They still have a problem regarding POWER tasks, I wrote them explicitly to push force power off and restart, not via ACPI, but via Proxmox API, as if they push it via ACPI it only works if you have qemu installed ( apparently ).

On ISO boot, you do not have qemu, so power tasks fail, what does this mean, well, usually a ticket for us " hy guys, my vm is stuck "

Other then the Power issues and no copy-paste in VNC, I cannot complain anymore on Modules Garden, they managed to integrate whatever we asked from them.

Their module was the only one that gave us the flexibility today and it actually works ( well sometimes it does not provision the addon-drve, but that is like 1 out of 100 setups, I can live with that).

So if you are stuck in boot loop, fire up a ticket.

If you need some specific ISO - Ticket ( we kinda have a huge collection by the way )

If there is any other OS that has a cloud image -> Ticket us and we will add it.

Until the power tasks are fixed, I apologize and ask for your patience. <3

I do not think netboot.xyz looks for cloud-image setup, if it did, it should have worked.

If DHCP is not set up you could get the IP information from the control panel and enter it manually

Done, and we will make you something nice by the way as promised.

Now, on the more interesting stuff.

In 48H we will randomly upgrade some storage VPS services ( regardless of size ) from Xeon Scal Gen 1 to Xeon Scale Gen 2, so if you see your services powered off then back on, don't freak out.

    There are 20 slots available.

    Including VPS Hornet Revision 2.0 - Storage 1TB - I125 ($20/yr) ? I'm excited if it hits mine

Well I imagine as people jump off the v4s, they will get a little bit faster each time.

By the way the Gen2 is really nice.... even though it's overkill for a storage VPS.

Yapp, during 2025 they all will be decommissioned,

Since we established that we do storage, we have no use for 12 Bay Units, 24 is a must.

Basically we wish to trash whatever is below 750 points in GB6 / vCore and it is a 12 Bay Unit.

Also, we are working on "stuff" to get large storage to AMD Ryzen Systems ( as these are usually 1U units, and doing raid of 4 drives is inefficient ), how? we do not know for now ( NFS is out of the question ).

V4 will gradually move to Xeon Scale Gen 1. After we finish that, Xeon Scale Gen1 CPU's will be swapped out for Scale Gen2 CPU's.

Now, this will be a long run, so hang on and enjoy the ride.

Scale Gen 2 is performing on par with some AMD Epyc's.

Also, there is no fun in having storage with a low end CPU, as it will not work swiftly.

We do budget hosting yes, but we do not wish to have ancient hardware, that is not my personal desire.

My problem with V4 is the total Memory Bandwidth

You might not give it as much importance as we do, but the VPS on Scale 1 and 2 boot up 2x as fast then on V4.

    V4
    Max Bandwidth ~68 GB/s
    IMC Enhancements Older architecture

    Scale Gen 1
    Max Bandwidth ~128 GB/s
IMC Enhancements Improved latency & efficiency

All these little enhancements ( +0.5%, +1% and so on ) usually translates in better customer experience.

  • Only if I could get some nice deals from @host_c. Sad times :(

  • I have a budget of $25 for annual payment, so on this special Valentine's Day, what special machines can I purchase from Host C with the specifications of 2 cores, 4GB RAM, and 2TB storage?
    or hostc surprise me!
