And, can your parents do remote hands if you need to check something physically?

My dad no, my mom has some knowledge that I can call. Worst case, I do have a pikvm there where I can ask her to connect the hdmi and usb cables so I can further troubleshoot if I can't access the device over the network (do have a site-to-site vpn between my lan and theirs)

Oh that's actually a great setup you have there. Also for connecting are you using plain old SSH or do you have a VPN as well like Tailscale or something?

I just use ssh and vnc/rdp as needed. Sometimes I do use the pikvm depending on what actually needs to be done. If I'm at home, I can just target those machines directly. If I'm away from home, I either vpn into my home network (then target them) or I will ssh in and tunnel the required ports.

Ah ok. I am planning to Tailscale my home connection. Still trying to figure out the specifics of DNS as I have a dynamic IP at home.

When using the Tailscale network you can use the built in DNS, and use the domains they provide. I generally just copy/paste the Tailscale IP from the app though as it's super convenient.

Oh didnt know this was possible. So, Tailscale gives out domains even on the free plans?

They're just local addresses that you can use while connected to the Tailscale network, of course. It's like having a LAN but all the devices are scattered over the internet.

I can't comment on tailscale but I recall seeing a post (was it in the bf thread?) where it should handle dynamic IPs automatically! I still have dyndns which I just point a different domain at the random dyndns url. One of these days, I will setup api usage to update my own subdomains so I can actually get rid of my dyndns account but other stuff always comes up.

Yah dyndns has also come up int he recommendations.

Maybe its worth educating them on such matters!

It could be only if they have an interest in it as well.

Tell them it can help grow the family business! FInd some ways to make it fun, that builds interest!

WE WANT THE ALPINE NOT A BELLY ITCHER!

ALPINE FTW ON RACKNERD - LOW RESOURCE USAGE + AWESOME SUPPORT + GREAT PRICES = PROFITS

DEDICATED RASPBERRY PI CLUSTERS WITH ALPINE LINUX

Honestly, I wish the raspberry pi colo some places offer would be cheaper. I would be happy to setup a pi5 with nvme at home, ship it, and then pay for the colo. I technically colo a pi at my parents place already

You did mention that. This pi run Alpine?

Nope, that pi runs ubuntu that I repartitioned/fully customized. I also have an intel nuc there that's still running the last free esxi which I had an alpine VM on for awhile. Though for racknerd, totally open a support ticket with the iso link and ask them to mount it so you can get it! They're super fast at responding and the novnc works perfect for installing a custom os!

Oh thanks for confirming that. And yes, Bas had a great experience as expected with the RN support mounting the ISO for him.

yeah, their first reply confirming I wanted a custom os where I have to fully support it (I wanted to try opensuse leap on a vps) was like 5 minutes after I submitted it. I forget how long it took for them to download/mount/etc but know that was also pretty fast.

If you do remember Dustin did mention their average response time to be just 10 minutes!!!

They have always been crazy fast in my experience, to get any faster they'd have to become mind readers.

Yeah no issues or complaints with them. The best service i have seen around these parts by far! I havent used very many though! i have been happy with racknerd so far
