Honestly not 100% sure if I first found out about it in 2024, but last year was the first time I looked to make much use of Tailscale, and I do love it. Initially for remote access to my Mac from my iPhone (using the app ‘Screens’), but now I’m also slowly incorporating it into some of my VPS which are providing functions that really don’t need to be publicly exposed. For example I have some MinIO instances I’ve removed public accessibility to, as any device I’ll backup can have Tailscale installed on them also.

Really like how simple it makes setting up a VPN across my deices.

They are all FREE for 1 year or lifetime, but no update/upgrade.

I switch back to Windows recently from Ubuntu desktop, but still use Ubuntu Desktop in my VM as guest on virtual box, more than 90% of work done with that. All my work environment Linux based. I am trying to get handy with ssh/RDP tools into Linux from Windows. Recently found mobaxterm, it supports ssh, scp and RDP as well with free and paid versions. I liked it over all, here one LET mentioned mRemoteNG. Is there more free GUI based tools exist before thinking of buying mobaxterm? I like tabbed interfaces, RDP, ssh next to each other, copy/paste between them. Right now installing and exploring mRemoteNG.

    mobaxterm 👍🏻

Mobaxterm is pretty good. I'm using it daily

Mobaxterm has also always been my go-to ssh client

  • My favorite discoveries:

Tailscale is absolutely awesome. It lets me keep all my devices connected in a secure virtual network, making access much easier. The only issue I faced was using it alongside PrivateInternetAccess VPN, but I found a solution when I learned that Tailscale partnered with MullvadVPN. Now, when I need a VPN, I can simply use a Mullvad server as an "exit node" for Tailscale. I even bought the Mullvad addon directly from Tailscale. The product is fantastic in its simplicity and robustness, and the pricing is great too. The free plan allows up to 100 devices per user account, which is amazing, and the Mullvad addon costs just $5/month for 5 devices. I’m so happy with it that I’m planning to include it as an option for the networking layer in a new Kubernetes-related tool I’m building this year.

AI tools became a bigger part of my workflow later in 2024. Before, I only used GitHub Copilot in VSCode, mostly for code autocompletion. Then I discovered BoltAI, a macOS app that’s a fantastic way to use multiple models, both local and hosted from various providers. BoltAI is irreplaceable once integrated into your workflows. I’ve set up quick shortcuts and a prompts library to handle a wide variety of tasks easily.

Through BoltAI, I discovered Ollama and LM Studio, followed by Llama.cpp and Llamafile as other ways to run local models. I learned a lot about open-source and locally hostable LLMs and had a lot of fun experimenting. However, I ended up sticking with paid models because they’re more powerful than what I can run on my M4 Pro Mac mini. This led me to OpenRouter, an amazing service that lets you use all sorts of models with a single API. I can use OpenAI and Anthropic when I need more power, but I usually default to DeepSeek v3 since it’s currently the best alternative, costing only a fraction of ChatGPT and Claude while delivering comparable performance.

Another incredible discovery in the AI space was Perplexity. It combines LLMs with regular web search, making it a great tool for research. I can trust it to return up-to-date information thanks to its integration with search engines, whereas LLMs alone can sometimes provide outdated responses. Perplexity is so good that I’m considering canceling my Kagi subscription, though I haven’t decided yet. Kagi is a paid search engine alternative to Google, and it already includes some AI features in my plan. If I upgrade, I get access to an "AI Assistant." I need to explore how this compares to Perplexity, especially since Kagi itself is a great search engine.

    Other tools worth mentioning:

    • OrbStack: A lighter and faster replacement for Docker Desktop on macOS.
    • AltTab: A small macOS app that improves how you switch between windows of the same app.
    • Bruno: A cool API client.
    • Horcrux: A tool for backups and easy migration of IMAP mailboxes.
    • Stremio: My media center for watching movies and TV shows. Along with Stremio, I discovered debrid services (I currently use Premiumize), which are awesome. While it may not be perfectly legal, it gives me a single place to watch almost anything. I wish there was a 100% legal, single streaming subscription that offered all content, but it doesn’t exist. Before Stremio and Premiumize, I used Usenet to download stuff, which was more time-consuming and expensive. Now, I just search for what I want on Stremio and start watching immediately.
  • I found out Terminus (https://termius.com/)

But alas, it's too pricey for the cloud vault.

I wish they did some deals to bring the cost down.

Amy clue how to get it cheaper?
