That cronjob was also at my VPS, so I guess it's there by default. It's mostly advantageous for the provider, as fstrim trims unused blocks so that those (usually) don't use actual space on the hypervisor.
For a normal user, it's basically irrelevant whether it's enabled or not unless you plan to make compressed full disk backups.
No, I don't think that is really true. Doing TRIM from time to time is an instruction to SSD/NVMe device directly, which helps its garbage collection to be more effective. Which in theory eventually translates to better performance for customers (especially during write operations). Though its probably hard to measure.
I deleted that cronjob as soon as I found it, because modern Linux OS already takes care of periodic fstrim, so there's no need to run it from 2 places. You can check it like this: systemctl list-timers fstrim and if it says 1 timers listes, unit fstrim.timer activates fstrim.service, it's already happening.
I could be totally wrong here, but as far as I understand it, as the trim happens inside of the VPS, it only signals the host system that the space is unused (if one uses qcow2 or sparse raw images and has
discardset toon/unmap(see https://www.qemu.org/docs/master/system/qemu-manpage.html), the space will be reclaimed), and an trim on the host system is necessary independently. This website seems to support that:
Well, the info you have collected quite strongly indicates that probably I'm the one that is totally wrong here, not you.
Yeah, in these heavily virtualized environment you can't trust anything, it seems. If TRIM from VM is converted to sparsification of the VM disk image on the host, then you're actually totally right that it helps provider to overcommit disk. And I'm not forgetting that the disk is actually also virtualized, it's CEPH, and god knows what it does with TRIM request, if those are even reaching it?!
OK, it seems that we can agree that we're not sure what really happens under the hood.
BTW, thanks a lot for the BF megathread statistics, really appreciate the effort!
A post from @maverick without gif and Sydney Sweeny?
That's something never seen before.
@maverick yes, trim inside the guest can be used to resparse the underlying image. No uncertainty in that 😉
In large storage arrays this makes a lot of sense to keep everything tidy. Also can help with keeping backup sizes at bay etc.
i am bumping up this old one
need to pressure prohosting24 to open a top up promotion for limited time.
i did write a support ticket and if there is multiple interest then it can happen.
regards all
