I'm back. Been away for a while. What's up you guys?

Not much... there hasn't been much happening lately other than a few different conversations about various topics such as Linux and @noob404's mystery project

I remember reading those a few pages back. But now that I was away a few days, I couldn't follow the discussions, because of this forum layout. It makes it a bit hard to use with the screen reader a big threads like this one. Even though I've been here for a few years, trying to figure out the best ways to navigate this forum with the screen reader is quite challenging, but it's fun and rewarding at the same time. :)

A screen reader huh? If its not too insensitive to ask, what caused you to need one and which do you use? I have Age Related Macular Degeneration in my family

I am totally blind and thus I need one. About what I am using, I use NVDA from Nv Access since it is free and open source, and I don't have the funds to pay for expensive screen reading software.
I hope I answered your questions.

Sorry to hear that. But, I am glad that we have people from varied spectra on the thread and generally on LET, as well.
Can you tell me what features you miss on opensource screen reading apps?

    Thanks @noob404.
To answer your question. I didn't missed anything now. NVDA, the screen reading software that I'm currently using right now is powerful enough for my computing needs. The beauty about NVDA is it's open source, so anyone can write add-ons / extensions to extends its functionality. The point that I maid earlier is just to let @DaDeveloper knows that in fact there are multiple screen readers software out there, both free and paid. Sorry if that statements confused you or anyone who read it.

Oh I was just curious and picking your brain to see what features make a good screen reader. Thanks for the reply.

No problem. I'm always happy to answer when someone interested in learn more about screen reading software. Some people when I told them I'm blind, they're actually not believe it. Which make sense after all, because we're just a stranger on the Internet. But on the other hand, no one would lie about something like that. Unless people who are mentally ill or wants attentions would do that.

So true. But, I see their side as well. There are perfectly healthy people both in real life and on the internet trying to feign and take advantage. But, I have no reason to doubt you. While it saddens me and even though, I don't know you personally, it's actually delighting to meet someone like you actually on this forum. Most people in your situation would have chosen a different field (I am assuming you are working/aspiring to work in the IT field). Thank you for inspiring us lazy people. Keep rocking!! Let us know if we can help in any way.

Thank you for your encouragement and support, it really means a lot to me.
Yes. I do volunteer work as a computer instructor for people with special needs in a special school for the blind.

Oh. That's actually inspiring as well. I am just picking your brain, but, please feel free to not answer. We have come a long way from computers being accessible only to a certain section of people. Screen readers and such do make it accessible to a wider population. But, still, what are some challenges you face while using/teaching physically challenged people computers that you hope there was a fix for, something to make it an easier task?

I'll try to answer it to the best of my abilities. But, please excuse my English since it is not my first language. So apologies if I express it in a wrong way.
The challenge that I often faced while teaching or / explaining computer to people with physically challenged is icons and layouts of any apps, the start menu, or the desktop in general. Let's say I teach my students about the layout of the desktop and taskbar. This hard part because explain to them, you have to know where the desktop is positioned at, and where the taskbar is located on the computer's screen when you turn on the computer. Especially young kids they're always curious.
And another thing, when teaching office applications to young adults, the part that I am struggle the most is clipart. Inserting the pictures into a PowerPoint documents is not something that blind people with screen reading software could do, because the screen reader cannot detects where the picture is located in the document, and editing the document would result in the character is overlapping with the picture inserted.
This is the situation that nobody could fix at the moment, but maybe in the future.
For icons of applications, some people has wrote various add-ons to get image descriptions with AI services, but it's still limited.
For other general tasks, like programming or sysadmin, blind people are able to work with those just fine. All the command line outputs are read by the screen readers. I know this, because I learn a little bit of programming and basic sysadmin task just to host and play around with WordPress.

Oh. I get it. I have never used a screenreader before. So, pardon my ignorance. Would a grid-based OS such that dividing the whole layout into grids and then placing specific icons in those help in any way? Maybe a click on the specific grid, not necessarily on the icon could notify the user what he clicked on, what the icon is.
I am not expert. So, kindly forgive me if this is something that already exists or has been tried before.
And, you are right. It could be tough teaching children. But, it's also inspiring that physically challenged children are getting into computers and are interested in this stuff.

Oh, I get it now. I guess something like that is what technologies like NeuraLink aim at bringing. Like, images could be sent to the brain. While the retina won't be able to visualise the image, the brain would have information on what an image or an object looks like. I get your point though. It's really difficult to let a physically challenged student know what an icon looks like just using words. I hope we soon have some technology, hopefully non-intrusive ones that could achieve this.
If you don't mind me asking, is your blindness congenital and incurable, or did it occur at a later stage. Again, please feel free not to answer, if it's too personal, and pardon me for asking.

Great.. enjoy your PC then. Wanna ship your old pc to me.. like Frobsy and DaDevs deal.. :D :p

Nah. That was my very first PC. Holds a lot of memories (not talking about the storage drives ).

First one is always special. I still have mine in a box.

Oh pardon me. I was travelling when I typed this. I meant the PC I am currently using is the first one I assembled on my own. Owned pre-builts before. But, the first PC you build with your own hands is special.

    What is the current config?

If you are a screen reader user, when on the desktop when arrowing around those icons, it would tell you. Like for example, you arrow around, and land on Google Chrome icon. The screen reader would tells you that Google Chrome. But it didn't tells what the icons of an app looks like, if you get what I mean. So basically, the screen reader does read the name of the icons on the desktop, but it doesn't tell you what the icon of Google Chrome looks like visually.

My blindness is congenital and it incurable. I only had one small eyeball in my right eye, and in my left eye had nothing at all.
Yeah, like I said earlier. Some people already wrote extensions to enhance the screen reader by taking advantage using Open AI's API, but the description result sometimes not very details. It's easier to have sighted people around at this point rather than relying entirely on AI.

    Ryzen 5700G, 16GB DDR4 3200, 500GB NVMe, 4TB HDD 5400rpm, 550W Corsair Bronze PSU, no additional GPU.

    Thats good config actually. 👍

Thanks man. Got it after saving up for an year.

How much you paid for this config at that time?

So, a lot can happen in the next 26-ish hours but as it stands right now:
@noob404 will take the gaming pc.
    @TrK will take the arcade1up.
3rd (ipad) and 4th (dedi) is close, like 16 messages close, so it's unknown between @DaDeveloper abd @Frobsy
    @xpress7 will take the credit

Of course, someone could spam to change that but after xpress7 , it's like 900 comments to catchup so I do feel like those names will forsure be the winners. So I'm giving y'all the early congrats!

    Message counts: https://racknerd.projecthive.eu/

I want to move up for ipad.. but don't want to stand at dedi (can't maintain after a year). :p

There could be awesome prizes in the NY thread as well.

    Waitingggg...

    Good luck to you guys.

Why? you leaving or what? btw, how can you get your pc shipped?

Have a friend in the US. Will have to convince him.

Great.. enjoy your PC then. Wanna ship your old pc to me.. like Frobsy and DaDevs deal.. :D :p

Nah. That was my very first PC. Holds a lot of memories (not talking about the storage drives ).

First one is always special. I still have mine in a box.

So I am thinking that I can swing 4 or 5 days here before this thing ends. Maybe, just maybe me and @TrK can do a dueling banjos and take @noob404 out.

Sheesh, why am I visualizing my dreams vaporizing into thin air

Crushing hopes and dreams is my thing. I am sure you have heard the rumors. ;)

I doubt anyone sees you like that, you were just fair at wanting something you wanted just like me...

Yeah, it's all fun after all, just don't take my microphone

No problem. Your mic is safe from me. @TrK on the other hand, I can't say.

What do you mean, i already said i am getting my hands on iPad.

How do you get it shipped?

There are ways, I will pay like $30, and customs it will be delivered to my door in 10-12 days.

Wow the shipping is very cheap to you, I think I'd pay way more to have it shipped. around or even more than $50. I wonder how much dustin ended up paying for my shipment, I'm too ashamed to ask

well, $30 is big amount if converted to our currency.

Same here man, typical 3rd tier countries

    I thought you're from US?

    He's from Algeria!

Good to know. Didn't know that.

There were discussions of how DaDeveloper was gonna win the gaming PC and ship Frobsy his 10-year old PC

Yeah I remember that, he was taking it seriously  Is my sarcasm really that good? The shipping alone is nuts hehe, big waste for that old PC
Speaking of that, did anyone try upgrading an old PC to windows 11? Why are they requiring ddr4 ram... It's just an operating system after all. I mean.. look at the cool ubuntu, he's cool with anything

Pretty sure, he was being sarcastic as well. As for Win 11 on DDR4, no idea, but, I think you can modify the ISO, if you really wanna try it. Ubuntu would run on a microwave oven.

Yeah I've seen people doing that, I just wanted to know if it runs smoothly

Why even bother! No major issues, but, there are still issues here and there on Win 11. Most are not even noticeable for most people.

True, I'll stay on win 10 for a while then, and might try the 11 on a virtual machine and see how it functions

LOL! I have been the one encouraging everyone to hype it and up and asking them not to be disheartened by missed GAs and such.

You were destructing us from the main prizes

Gotta look out for myself. Am a human, after all

True brother  I would do the same hehe

@Frobsy You need roughly ~275 comments to join the 2K club. You up for it?

    YES SIRRRRR
What's the time window though? I might be able to get there within 4 days if I can get more online time here.

275 s such a low number. You could be there today, if you had time.

230 to go now, I think I'll be there sooner than I thought

As I said. 275 not a big deal for you.

190 comments to go, can frobsy reach 2k today?
    Let's find out!

@Frobsy Any update on the Reselling business. If you have already started, wanted to know how it is. I myself might start one. Just wanted some tips.

I've been analyzing the competition last week and it looks intense haha. I'm trying to find the best payment gateways for international orders. do you know any that don't require setting up a company?

It depends on your region. Most do ask for some kind of identification, unless it's crypto. Have you tried Razorpay?

I heard about Razorpay, but I didn't know they didn't require setting up a company. I'll look into it. thanks

In India, all they require as for business requirement is an address (doesn't have to be a business address). BTW, I hope you ignored PP and Stripe for some other reason. They are good options if that works for you, as TrK mentioned.

I don't wanna set up a UK company again other than that Stripe is the best for sure

    Try Razorpay then. Email them.

I just visited them and they look like they are focused on the Indian market , I'll reach out to them and see if they can help
