@xpress7 btw i got a nice domain an old one at that too, wanna create something on a .us domain with img in keyword.

Sure we can work on it. You have any ideas in mind?

  • Man, Docker is a bit to get started with, but, very useful it seems. Was planning on installing a LEMP server as an alternative to XAMPP, which was my go to on Windows. But, decided to give Docker a try, to help isolate things. After a lot of trial and error, got a LEMP server running on an Ubuntu Docker container. I know that I could get these packages separately (PHP, MySQL, etc.) as Docker images. But, I wanted to try it out like this. Next up, might try to get it working on Alpine.

    Good morning guys

Good morning xpress. How's it going? Still racing the deadline?

Morning noob. Yup, its still on, and a new project started. Have to work on that as well. :(

Ah, good luck, dude. BTW, made the jump to Lubuntu. Working on setting up, as we speak.

Thats great. All softwares/alternatives you used on windows available in Linux? Also try xubuntu as well if you have free time.

Yup, installing them one by one. But, have no experience with them yet. This is mostly applicable for GUI apps on Windows. Glad that I moved to Linux though, as most of the time for my projects I have had to use either WSL or a VM. This would be much better, I guess.

I did use Xubuntu years ago, and did like it. But, have used Lubuntu more than Xubuntu in the past few years. Hence the choice.

You are free bird now. :p

Yes, was a bit difficult with the setup, especially moving files and converting the partitions to ext4. I prefer that over NTFS. Currently, moving files on a 5400RPM HDD, so, you know, it's frustrating.

You are running OS in HDD?

No. On an NVMe. Just had a few files on HDD, especially the VM's VDIs. Was a struggle backing them up and then moving them.

Yup, VDIs are big and take lots of time to move, esp if you store them in single file like me.

I just tarred the important files within each of these VDIs. They themselves were pretty large.

What do you run on those VMs?

Every one of my Linux projects including builds of kernels and some distros was done on those VMs.

    Ah that mystery project. ;)

Nah, this is different. I am into PS4 Linux projects.

    You have a PS4?

Yup. Can't remember the last time I gamed on it though.

Time to get a ps5 then

Broke right now. Will hopefully get the PS6.

I think they relased a new version of PS5 recently.

PS5 Pro - That's a glorified PS5, imo. Would rather spend that money on a new Gaming PC.

I prefer the gaming pc anytime. I like to have some control over the things I buy.

I am more into scalability and long term commitment hence PCs for me as well.

Yup. Upgrading/modifying the rig is the main advantage. Someday I will intall the roof top solar panels, and will buy an ultimate rig at that time.

Electricity consumption is a concern >>?

    Consumption and availability both.

For storing Media for something like Jellyfin, what would you guys recommend - 3.5" SATA HDD or NVMe?

For large storage definitely HDDs. Price/GB.

    Ssds aare getting cheaper ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Not for larger storage, like 4TB

SSD prices are okay for upto 1 TB.

Yup, upto 1TB they are fine.

Moreover, if you are getting an SSD 2TB or higher, I'd definitely recommend a Samsung/atleast a Crucial, not any of those cheaper brands.

    I always prefer Samsung. I have 1Nvme, 1TB 860 evo, and 500GB portable T5.

Yah. They are the best, but, are much more expensive.

I usually buy them when there are good offers. (or mistakes :p )

Me as well. I try to hunt for them, but, most of the time, they are picked up very quickly.

Not much now. Those were golden days when Amazon was launched in India.

Ahh ok. But, still there are a few errors every now and then.

Mostly they are cancelling orders if there are any pricing errors. Did you find any recently? They used to ship everything in the beginning.

Bought lots of stuff at that time that I'm still using like logitech keyboards, ssds, 1 hdd , so many...

Oh yah. I have heard of Flipkart cancelling em, not Amazon. As for recent finds, not any on computer peripherals.

Amazon also joined Flipkarts cancelling band a long time ago. But FK is more aggressive though.

Yup, recently I din't see any mistakes in computer peripherals (or not coming our way due to tg channels)

Yah, they have grown smarter Ig.

Yup. I missed those golden days. Esp the Amazon treasure hunt. (1 rupee product if we crack the puzzle). I won like around 40 items in one sale. The local courier company sent a separate auto to deliver my items lol. :D

Damn. Those never worked out for me.

Man, I enjoyed it a lot. Solving the clues, and getting the product in seconds. That adrenaline rush.... They stopped the hunt after 2 years.

Depends. If you are a tinkerer or a security engineer, a semi-closed system like PS is always interesting.

Interesting but not preferable, everyone prefers mac* or *nix systems.

I was talking about test subjects among major security engineers. Check Hackerone.

I know what were you talking about, and I didn't said they aren't fun, but not preferable than PCs.

Oh no, obviously, they aren't to be considered PC alternatives.

Obviously, that's why they are good little funny boxes; they are not a good solution for anything serious.

US Air Force disagrees - https://phys.org/news/2010-12-air-playstation-3s-supercomputer.html

See. Most people just think of these as simple little boxes, but, that's not always the case. It's not a well known fact that, gaming consoles are often packed with good, if not the best hardware. But, proprietary tech and lack of open source drivers makes them good enough, just for gaming. It's also a lesser known fact that Sony usually sells the consoles itself at a loss. Their profits comes from games and accessories.

The newer hardware got vendor locked and project got rizzed big time, the condor project was a fun to read back in the days but if i remember correctly they were utlising PS3 not PS3s as stated by the above link, i know about sony doing that and also xbox one was the game changer in console markets. At that time that was thought provoking but nowadays i see more price friendly computing power cheaper than consoles(apple silicon), with apple unified memory powering their CPU + GPU i would say it's much more better than a ps or xbox, and now when we are seeing EPYC and ampere delivering some high core count CPUs the difference will keep increasing. The condor cluster project was good initiative but i wouldn't trust Sony PS for my serious work at all.

No, these were stacked PS3s not a single one, back when Sony stuck to their OtherOS support promise. You are right, if I need a PC, a PlayStation won't be the one I get for it. I am just saying though that it won't be fair to just disregard them, cause if in the future these companies do unlock them or maybe make a bit of the source available, it'd be, if not a PC alternative, a decent PC/gamig console.

Man, Docker is a bit to get started with, but, very useful it seems.

It's easy and damn easy if you are into portainer or something, I would have just installed yunohost and left everything to it's UI or maybe easypanel, well it works if it works.

Thought about these panels, but, I just love doing it from scratch. Guarantees a learning experience. I will also have to look into Portainer next

I know they were stacked but if my memorial serves me right they started replacing ps3s to ps3 because of vendor lock issues, and as I said earlier consoles are designed and manufactured to be gaming consoles they can't replace PCs and vice versa. I have my fair share of playing on ps one, ps2 and PS3 but for me it wasn't a PC alternative but a dedicated gaming device which works for my gaming needs. But since then I have completely shifted to PCs for game and work, never looked back.

Portainer is good especially good with my remote needs, cause I am running docker on my Linux pc and there are times I just want to log into container for some thing or just want to change something here and there.

@xpress7 btw i got a nice domain an old one at that too, wanna create something on a .us domain with img in keyword.

Sure we can work on it. You have any ideas in mind?

Thinking of a image optimization + CDN service. Might be interesting who knows.

Sure. Have been thinking to build a service like that for my personal usage. But not getting free time. Let us discuss in DM when we both have free time. ๐Ÿ‘

    Prolly they were losing money.

Obviously. It was to attract customers to platform , esp from FK. :D

Yes, but, FK support, over the years, esp. after Walmart takeover is really bad.

Docker is simple after you get used to it
