For storing Media for something like Jellyfin, what would you guys recommend - 3.5" SATA HDD or NVMe?

Nothing beats the value for money choice HDDs.

Been seeing these Matrix and Aykait HDDs for cheap and 2 year warranty (though). Not sure if these are good enough. If I do get that, I will also need an externally powered Docking station, in which case a SATA SSD seems to be the comfortable choice for media storage.

Don't go with these cheap ones, they are just refurbished HDDs I wouldn't go with them at all, instead I would rather get new consistent SSD.

    Good morning guys

Good morning xpress. How's it going? Still racing the deadline?

Morning noob. Yup, its still on, and a new project started. Have to work on that as well. :(

Ah, good luck, dude. BTW, made the jump to Lubuntu. Working on setting up, as we speak.

Thats great. All softwares/alternatives you used on windows available in Linux? Also try xubuntu as well if you have free time.

Or have a different drive filled with Linux ISOs to try and fiddle with, distros i recommend, TempleOS, alpine, elementary, Debian 12, parrot, Zorin, pop, manjaro, kodachi, void, FreeBSD, Slackware, garuda, Gentoo, deepin, endeavor, etc, and the list goes on.

I tried Gentoo may be more than a 15yrs back. I think disk it came with Digit magazine. :D

In other options, I liked Manjaro, Deepin is good too. Ran CentOS for servers , then moved to Debian. Did't try others.

CentOS was legendary until RHEL turned it to into an upish-midstream for their paid linux. And now it's always Debian Thx! well i am thinking of migrating some servers from the ancient centos7 to alma 9 or maybe Debian Thx!

Yup. RHEL wantedly destroyed Centos, the most stable distro. yummm

Yup, installing them one by one. But, have no experience with them yet. This is mostly applicable for GUI apps on Windows. Glad that I moved to Linux though, as most of the time for my projects I have had to use either WSL or a VM. This would be much better, I guess.

I did use Xubuntu years ago, and did like it. But, have used Lubuntu more than Xubuntu in the past few years. Hence the choice.

You can always replace the DE, you're a fan of KDE?

If you are not using pop os de then why even go with pop?

minimal resource usage..... i am currently using elementaryOS and Zorin so......

Zorin pro? Elementary is good too.

Yeah that Pro tingled me for good but elementary is better for some use cases, i really like its UI.

Yeah, I liked Elementary UI. Deepin UI too. But they were somewhat sluggish on my VM. XFCE is perfect balance for customization and performance for my taste.

Yes, was a bit difficult with the setup, especially moving files and converting the partitions to ext4. I prefer that over NTFS. Currently, moving files on a 5400RPM HDD, so, you know, it's frustrating.

For storing Media for something like Jellyfin, what would you guys recommend - 3.5" SATA HDD or NVMe?

For large storage definitely HDDs. Price/GB.

Yah, was considering that. But, adding the price of a SATA Docking station and the electricity costs and physical space consumption, a SATA SSD seems better in the longer run.

I thought you are looking for TBs of storage.

It's just for Media storage for the Jellyfin server running atop my Android box. So, 1TB should be enough.

How do you connect that to Android box? You want to buy an external ssd?

    Ssds aare getting cheaper ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Not for larger storage, like 4TB

SSD prices are okay for upto 1 TB.

Yup, upto 1TB they are fine.

Moreover, if you are getting an SSD 2TB or higher, I'd definitely recommend a Samsung/atleast a Crucial, not any of those cheaper brands.

    I always prefer Samsung. I have 1Nvme, 1TB 860 evo, and 500GB portable T5.
