    Interesting.

Been researching good boards for the past few weeks. Nothing is beyond Father Google's vision.

Have you tried tinkering with Pi or similar devices?

What are you trying to build @noob404 ? Lots of the Raspberry Pi boards work well as servers when booting them off a USB hard drive. Micro SD cards are not very good for servers as they tend to need to be replaced often.

Hey, we were just discussing how Google and its elusive telemetry trackers are around us everywhere. So, I was planning to get a good micro board like the Pi or as TrK recommended the Nano Pi R5S, to install OpenWrt on it and route all connections through it with Adguard DNS and other anti-tracking packages installed.

Would love to have your opinion and input as well.

I've had a pi at my parents ever since the first one and yeah, microsd cards do die fairly quick, especially when you write to them (ex: apply patches/etc.) but I have yet to have one die that I set to read-only (dedicated little projects that don't need to write stuff). The card dying isn't really an issue if you have it in your house/very close by since you can just replace it but for the one I have at my parents, it's like a 7hr drive one way to my parent's place so I can exactly just swing by one evening and be back home for bed (technically possible but that's way too much driving in one day).

Even if it's in your house, I do recommend using an external usb drive or with the pi5, get a nvme hat! I'm actually impressed with the interface on my pi5 (prepped to replace the pi4 at my parent's place)

Though, when you start talking about a pi5, nvme hat, and a case, you're getting close to the mini pc range for cost that it might be better just to get one of those instead (unless you really need gpio or want an arm machine)

Pi5 is impressive, especially with all the performance improvements on GPU and CPU but i am guessing one would eventually need an active cooling solution for pi5, i am actually more impressed with their ram modules and m.2 ssh hat intro, but with increased perf and voltage i wouldn't go for it just yet, i would prolly go with orangepi 5 plus or nanopi r6c as they both support m.2 without any HATs and eMMC, of course there's 2.5G lan as well(two on orange and one on nano). I quite agree with SDcard usage for power use unless one uses an endurance series from Samsung/sandisk or NAND one from silicon power, one should not rely on the standard C10/U1 sdcards for long.

If it have 4 batteries like my vertiv one, it's costly to replace batteries especially if they are deep cycle one. Deep cycle batteries go for around 2K each, while standard SLA battery can go for 1.3K each.

How much did it cost when you bough that? As per their claim those batteries last very long.

I was initially thinking of a microSD, but, you are right. They aren't built for constant R/W. The other option was to use an old 2.5" SATA HDD I had lying around, but, for some reason, even my Android box has trouble reading them for longer times (after some time, the drive starts to tick). Not sure if R Pi would be any better. I guess I'll have to use an NVMe drive. Thanks for the input.
