@noob404 said: Though expensive, it seems like a fun project. What bay/NAS are you planning to buy?

I will probably build one from scratch using the xtreme machine's case and ecc-supported cheap am4 board and processor.

Sounds cool, but, won't that mean increased electricity bills? Isn't there a more inexpensive option. I have wondered about this, and believe it'd be enough for my case, but, you being an advanced dude, might not work for you.
I was planning to build a home server with two old hard drives connected to my Android box using an externally powered SATA dock that supports two drives. You could also try using the Pi board you introduced me to yesterday.

I won't be using an hungry CPU at all if intended for storage, will be fine with 4300g or 4600g tuned down to 35-45W, and it's enough for a storage server with raid i guess, i guessing the total TDP for this won't be crossing 250w at all, and if i replace the processor with 4300ge or 4600ge i can further reduce the chomping down power to let's say 200w as for system i think i will go with truenas or unraid depending on the budget, as for android connected storage i can do that as well since i already have a spare arm sbc module running dietpi, but it won't be something i can rely on as i will not only be setting up the storage for backup but for personal remote storage and backup service too, for photos and videos to dump data from my devices while i am sleeping, so for me raid looks like much more secure with running few instances of let's say docker images here and there.

Yeah, in my experience with home/small business nas, you won't save much electicity with a purpose built nas and that's just at idle, you can probably tweak a custom build to get close or go with a similar cpu to achieve similar power usage. The only places where purpose built nas excel is size (if not rack mounting), hot-swapping (if your hardware doesn't support it), and the ease of use/updates/support (helpful if you use a distro like truenas/unraid/etc).

  • @noob404 said: You are right there. But still 250W is too much compared to what an ARM device would pull for this including the SATA dock. WDYT?

Ofcourse ARM is known be power efficient and i can probably approach the same power efficiency if i use slower x86 processors for say n100 with the TDP of 6w but it will be without any ECC support and say bye bye to expansion. It would be perfectly fine for home project or a hobby, i am running 1tb sata HDD plugged into my tomato router serving as a webdisk for occasional torrent leech and other tasks. And it serve it's purpose well enough, but what i am looking into is a full featured backup solution and an additional server to run things through docker or perhaps a couple of VMs.

What are you trying to build btw? NAS? Earlier you were tinkering with mail server.

No, this was a project I had planned a few months ago, but had to quit as the SATA dock stopped working.

Oh ok. How is your mail server project? Up and running?

    $5/yr or a backpack? ;)

All will do, my backpack is en route to me...

You got one? congrats. Mine is not yet shipped. Chief said it will take some time to recieve their stock.

Yours is #1 on the list and will be going out within the next week or two, and I will message you with tracking info as soon as that is enroute :)

Thats awesome news. Thank you <3

Being #1 in list feels so good. ๐Ÿ˜

Howdy @xpress7 -- Good news! As of today, your backpack is now enroute to you :)

Sending DM with tracking info shortly.
