  • Anyone know which folders I should add to the backups for NGINX, MYSQL, PHP server? Would /var alone be fine?

The defaults paths are usually under var (/var/www/* and /var/lib/mysql) though don't forget to also backup the config files within /etc.
Though for the DB, it would probably be best to use mysqldump though it could take a long time if it's a large DB.

Busy with setting up stuff here and there, the party must continue...

Oh please carry on. I decided to setup an email server and client by myself using iRedmail and Roundcube. There was an easy to follow tutorial. But, it has been a headache. Not even sure if 2.5GB RAM would be enough for the email + websites.

If looking for spam filtering and anti malware then nope it's not. But for pure testing mail stuff, it's enough. Also if you want i don't mind providing some professional email on mxroute reseller account I have.

Thanks a lot for the offer, TrK. They are selling for $15/3 years. But, I really wanted to do this stuff on my own and learn that. As always, I really do appreciate your input.

You can also look into mailcow, modoboa and mailinabox as well. As for email client try looking at sogo and cypht. Also make sure your servers ip adress have a ptr(rdns} record and check in rbl for any listing, you can ignore uceprotect, they are just some greedy peeps.

Thanks a lot. For now, I have been using iRedmail with Roundcube, which seem good enough for my purpose. But, I will keep your suggestions in mind. Thank you. I plan to setup PTR, DKMS, SPF and DMARC records as well.

Sounds good enough, good luck with the experience...

Thank you. Currently having a real hard time stopping 301 redirect to main domain every time subdomain is accessed. This started happening after iredmail instalaltion.

check the vhost for SSL settings and cross check the subdomain guide of iredmail.

After painstaking trial and error and a bit of reading up, I am finally there, or I think so. Love debugging. But, sometimes, I wish there were 48 hours in a day

And an unlimited supply for caffeinated drinks.

None taken yet. I consider that an achievement as well. Right now, trying out rsnapshot for incremental backups

Sounds good, offloading to where though? incremental backups require a lot of storage.

What he said, you can create a cron to dump the DBs periodically in a folder you can sync for backup.

Well yeah, it will be fine, but I always have a backup for the backup and now I am thinking of getting a few HDDs to set up a raid array at Homelab for the local copy of backups as well, talk about costly...

Sounds cool, but, won't that mean increased electricity bills? Isn't there a more inexpensive option. I have wondered about this, and believe it'd be enough for my case, but, you being an advanced dude, might not work for you.
I was planning to build a home server with two old hard drives connected to my Android box using an externally powered SATA dock that supports two drives. You could also try using the Pi board you introduced me to yesterday.

Read again, he said it's expensive and he would rather use something else that won't consume as much electricity

I won't be using an hungry CPU at all if intended for storage, will be fine with 4300g or 4600g tuned down to 35-45W, and it's enough for a storage server with raid i guess, i guessing the total TDP for this won't be crossing 250w at all, and if i replace the processor with 4300ge or 4600ge i can further reduce the chomping down power to let's say 200w as for system i think i will go with truenas or unraid depending on the budget, as for android connected storage i can do that as well since i already have a spare arm sbc module running dietpi, but it won't be something i can rely on as i will not only be setting up the storage for backup but for personal remote storage and backup service too, for photos and videos to dump data from my devices while i am sleeping, so for me raid looks like much more secure with running few instances of let's say docker images here and there.

  • @codelock said: Electricity is cheap ?

It can be cheap if i install solar panels, i mean 40K for 2KW solar panels is perfectly fine with me and it will run my homelab perfectly fine,

No, this was a project I had planned a few months ago, but had to quit as the SATA dock stopped working.

You are right there. But still 250W is too much compared to what an ARM device would pull for this including the SATA dock. WDYT?
