Low geekbench score because host cpu type not passed through?
Hi,
I got myself a 4vcore 7950x vps yesterday.
First thing I did was a yabs run.
Turned out the geekbench score was pretty low:
Single: 887
Multi: 2645
https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/7213173
As you can see the cpu type is not passed through by the host, it is QEMU Virtual CPU version 2.5+.
So i asked the provider if they gave me the correct server (the ssd size was also not matching, higher than it should be in that case).
Their answer was that the geekbench score is low because they dont pass through the host's cpu type.
They could set it to the virtual cpu typ EPYC. That one would support more flags and would support geekbench better.
I am so confused. Geekbench of course is not a perfect representation of cpu power by any means. But isnt the score measured by performing various tasks? If not setting the correct virtual cpu type is the problem for the score, doesnt that mean that the overall performance is limited by that?
I dont know what to think about all this, I am not an expert by any means on that topic but what the provider says doesnt make any sense to me.
Can anyone please help me understand this?
Thank you ![]()

What host did you get it from? It may be oversold by a huge margin, definitely should be getting atleast double the scores you got even on a busy node
Let me guess. EvosHosting
unesty
Oversold shite get your money back if you can

@UnestyCompany, congrats on the lowest 7950 geekbench score on LET.
@d33p, the server is clearly badly oversold. Move to a better provider.
tbf, I only paid about 20Euro. So not much harm done. But I find this whole situation somewhat sketchy.
That said, does not setting the correct cpu type really limit the performance by that much?
In that case, wouldnt that mean that the providers is knowingly limiting the performances of the vps?
They just massively oversell resources per node it’s common with these sketchy providers
If you don’t passthrough the CPU type, I believe AES accelerators won’t be available which results in Geekbench particularly reporting low results. I noticed quite a huge performance improvement when switching from the default QEMU to host or EPYC which passes through more flags that help accelerate the benchmark.
He oversold too much.
Thank you.
Is not setting it it only impacting the score or also the performance?
AFAICS, it would so limit the performance in some tasks, am I correct?
Also do you know why the dont pass the correct type?
It would limit performance for usecases that use AES encryption (and some other CPU features that I don't recall off the top of my head). You might noticce this if you're doing a lot of work involving TLS connections (e.g. HTTPS) or other work involving encryption.
Setting to generic EYPC CPU will certainly help.
That is still pretty good GB6 score, considering monthly cost is around $2.50 per month.
If you are not happy with GB6 score, just cancel and keep looking if any provider will even offer you 2x 7950 vCPU for $3.
do the numbers.
Thanks, @Advin.
That is the most accurate and to the point explanation why CPU passthrough is important for VPS.
Even setting to generic EYPC CPU will help with big boost in performance.
For my VPS, GB6 score.
Well, it's still the worst score for 7950x that I have seen so far.
Given that they were able to set the cpu type to 7950x3d on your vps, it shouldnt be an issue to do so on mine as well.
I will ask them.
I would be fine with a score like yours, and even that is a score of a quite busy / oversold node.
Well, when I got the VPS there was a different promotion. Look at the disk size and memory above.
Your VPS could be set on a different host server and under different set to promotion rules. That would explain why they are offering to set CPU passthrough as generic EPYC and that would get you a decent performance boost.
Again, try getting 2 vCPU 7950 for $3 from any provider, and that too on monthly basis.
Well, that was the part why I was wondering f they accidently gave me the wrong vps.
Mine also has 2.2GB and 50gb SSD although their promotion says 2GB and 25GB SSD.
The current promotion is 25gb storage. So definitely you got a decent upgrade.
So, if I were you, I would be happy if support can set the CPU passthrough to EYPC.
Well, I get your point but I dont see the issue for not setting the correct cpu type.
At minimum its a huge blunder on their part for using the default QEMU.
As I said before, if you are not happy, just cancel the VPS and move to another provider and avoid that huge blunder
Also, originally I was considering moving over a substantial amount of my infrastructure over and get some bigger machine. So this is more like a test balloon. But if they cant even setup the machine correctly without the correct cpu type passed, it's a tough sell.
You are right.
Just avoid that provider.
I don't see you complaining about huge blunder of 50 gb storage allocated against 25 gb.
Again, just go with provider whom you are happy with. And avoid huge mistake
cpu passthrough and AES-NI flags were enabled by support after raising a ticket.
Not sure what benchmark are you refering to? Is that one of your machines?
Mine looks better now, but far from yours.
I guess my vps is on a very busy node maybe an oversold server.
