    Hello,

I'm from Bangladesh & let me give you with some insights on the issue OP posted.

The civil unrest first started for Quota Reform. In the govt. Jobs, there was 56% quota reserved for different categories & generalized students only got 44% which means over 100 vacancies in a Govt. Job, 56 would be allocated to different classified people & 44 would be allocated from non-classified general people.

The govt. wanted to stop the protest anyhow and so they deployed their own goons along with Police. There were gunshot, cocktail, tearshell and what not. Even, Armoured personnel carriers (APCs) were deployed as a last method.

100+ have already died. The govt. downgraded the Mobile Network to 2G first. The broadband connectivity was still there. As Bangladesh was connected via 2 Submarine Cables & 6 ITC Cables, all the International Internet Gateway (IIG) provider was sent notice to stop transmitting any data (whatever it be, even for banks). This lead to disaster. We are out of connectivity for more than 48 hours. Bank cards aren't working. Money transfer from abroad is stuck. All utilities (e.g. Prepaid Electricity, Prepaid Gas) are about to finish.

Right now, curfew is running. Nobody knows what's happening. Pray for us.

How you come online. Is it Internet Back online ?

No, I'm in India right now.

Well, given that Bengali is a widespread and (as far as I can tell) accepted term in English to designate a person from the ethnic group in question, "not Bengalis" seems incorrect or perhaps reflects your personal preference

That said, the term Bangla is also used to designate a person from the ethnic group in question, but this term is (again, as far as I can tell) less common in English

Not exactly true, Bengali is used to mainly refer to the people from West Bengal in India.
People from Bangladesh are usually referred as Banglas or Bangladeshis.

    Confusing for us indeed.

The people of Bangladesh shall be known as Bengalis as a nation and as Bangladeshis as citizens.

Right. I was indeed referring to the nation or ethnic group

If I moved to Bangladesh and eventually became a citizen, I would become a Bangladeshi but not a Bengali (or a Bangla)

Anyway, it's possible that many Bengalis prefer the term Bangla

These kinds of linguistic questions aren't always straightforward, given the not-always-straightforward history of peoples and regions

In beautiful free America? Last year you almost wanted to meet me in a police station for an in-person service transfer, when I told you about my peculiar claustrophobia that only manifests in police stations.

No tea for you btw. Only the scimitar.

Thinking of it, they don't serve tea in American police stations. The way bitcoin was destroyed in America wasn't with teas and beatings, but with a fanfare of how important it was to protect the safety of every very special average joe against market manipulation, money laundering and terrorism.

As I understand it, the quota is for military vets from Bangladesh's civil war. That in itself is not bad - many governments try to give vets an edge for jobs - but the issue is (a) this quota is so big, and (b) this population heavily overlaps with the ruling power's friends, and forms a natural political power base.

    @whmsys said: Any idea ?

Yeah it's been all over the news. Sounds very similar to the USA:

    • Students riot because they want something.
    • Government gives it to them
    • Students now want something more and continue rioting.

    I kid, I kid...I'm sure there's more to the situation that I don't understand.

@yoursunny said: Regulation would not allow such system to exist. Government would tell Apple and Google to block/delist/uncertify such apps. Yeah, this is standard procedure in socially backwards countries like China or Russia. But in the US? LOL. Get out of here.

I mean, we had CB radios in the 70s. You could buy them at gas stations and talk with everyone within 7 miles and they're designed so the government can't regulate them. You can still buy them. And that's one example.

If idiots want to get together to protest in the US, I don't think there's going to be any problems coordinating.

What are you talking about? Bitcoin wasn't destroyed by public service announcements, it hasn't caught on because it's impractical and stupid. Cocaine users fund at least three levels of corruption and yet the world still does shitloads of cocaine.

My credit card works with a tap. It's instant. I get cashback/points/rewards. I have zero fraud/liability. I have credit. Why the fuck would I change to a system with uncertainty (delay), fees, unpredictable fluctuating value and take all the risk myself? It makes zero sense.

  • An interesting thing is that while the Internet was down, the Intranet was apparently up, so you could still use the ISPs' network for locally hosted applications.

My assumption is that the ISP still recognizes and routes traffic between their own subnets (even if they're not announced or available to the public internet). I would assume that the only way to get access would be to be on that specific ISP.

One can still access all the local server's IPs through IX (In this case BDIX) even if the internet was turned off by the government.

It will require port scanning if you already don't have a list of IPs of your country/states IX connected networks.

All traffic was blocked at the IIG but the ISPs were still connected at the national IX. So pretty much all ISPs except the mobile operators had interconnectivity. A lot of people spun up FTPs, Chat and other creative services to stay connected which was nice.
