LET member is suspected of becoming angry

A few days ago, I was searching for GPU servers online and discovered that Vultr was selling GPU servers. I knew that Vultr was famous for its hourly billing, so I registered with Vultr and browsed their GPU server prices, which I found acceptable. Therefore, I topped up my account with $30. Unexpectedly, after completing the top-up and clicking to activate the VPS, Vultr suddenly notified me that I needed to wait for approval before being allowed to use the GPU server. I was extremely shocked at that moment. Why didn't they inform me beforehand and waited until after I had topped up to notify me?

After a day, I still couldn't use the GPU server, so I opened a ticket to inquire with Vultr's customer service why I couldn't use the GPU server and requested a refund if they wouldn't allow me to use it. However, two more days passed without any response from Vultr. I became very angry and told them that if they continued to ignore my request, I would expose Vultr's actions. Another two days later, as usual, I logged into my email to check if there was a reply from Vultr's customer service. Incredibly, what awaited me was an account suspension email. Yes, Vultr claimed that I had violated the Terms of Service and thus banned my account.

Personally, I never had problems with vultr. What kind of "approval process" they do? Something like manual provision process? Did they asked you to send them your ID?

    And, welcome to LET! ;)

    Lesson: Do not threaten providers!

I think you could use free credits, but always ask questions before signing up with a provider you are using for the first time.

They didn't ask me for any more information, so I opened a ticket, however, without any reply. In the end, I found my account banned

yes, thats against most providers TOS.
you could have waited for few more days and hit a chargeback against Vultr for not providing agreed services, if its not specifically stated in TOS that GPU servers are assigned manually after approval, then Vultr would have lost that $30 plus another $20 as chargeback fee from payment processor plus their payment reputation would have decreased a bit.

  • Your attitude got bad as well :D

I once accidentally topped up my account with $200 instead of $20. Asked for a refund and it was delivered within hours.

Never had a bad experience with dealing with Vultr's technical team for BGP related inquiries either.

It's pretty standard to prevent new users from accessing large compute services, although much more common on post-paid services like AWS or GCloud than a prepaid one like Vultr. Try spinning up a massive AWS instance right now, you'll hit a quota instantly.

Your claims of fraud are pretty laughable, you could've just spent the credits on a CPU server if you wanted to. Vultr didn't sell you a GPU server, they sold you credits to use on their service. Vultr aren't lying about having GPU servers -- you just need to get approval before you can use them. It's like a provider that does manual provisioning of services. Definitely not fraud...

And to like clarify: Vultr didn't say you couldn't use their GPU servers. They were just taking a while to approve your request. Had they denied it, and refused to give you your money back, that would be fraud. But they never said that you couldn't get your money back and by the time they got around to answering your ticket, you had already threatened them so they closed your account.

You're angry because you're entitled and bitter that you got kicked off for threatening their staff. Like, obviously don't do that. It's like yelling at a fast food worker for something you perceive to be wrong with your food.

I do expect that they will actually refund you the $30 (you didn't mention whether or not they did).

A day ? Most companies not just limited to hosting advise 72 hours as general time frame to reply to billing related questions.

It is not like you are reporting your server is down, it was a verification issue which does take time for them to review your account, sign in history such as are you using a VPN or proxy, is it a pre paid card a actual credit/credit card. They could be receiving hundreds of these a day and will take time to review each one but because you feel you should have the full VIP express treatment you got mad and issued a threat and now been left to look like a total dick, you say you do not care about the $30 but care enough to make a thread for attention.

They would also protect their GPU servers since they offer hourly billing, it will have happened before and will again, someone sigs up with dodgy info, uses the GPU for crypto mining, the payments later revered for fraud, the person has used a lot of GPU resources earned their mining and who actually loses, the company since the payment is reversed and who wins, the fraudster.

next time, do not issued threats to providers, do research, ask questions to the provider and be patient.

Your self entitlement has been doubled.

This might to be sanction result. Because USA issue sanction against Russia and (might be) China as well some other countries and request hosts to verify that they do not provide services to sanctioned person, companies, countries it is might increase verification process. May be some your data have been red alert for them. Usually refund should not be problem but with same action host just cannot refund you money due to same sanction. But this is only hepotese.

IF that really happened exactly like you told then yes, they behaved like assholes. Experience however shows that new user + first post + massive complaint shouldn't be accepted at face value (to put it politely).

Whatever, at the end of the day Vultr and you don't seem to fit well, for whatever reason.
Btw, did they fully refund you?

    Basically what xHosts said:

    1. Don't threaten your providers. Even if angry as employers we have a responsibility to protect our employees from abuse. The simplest way to do this is to be firm in dealing with cases like yours. Usually by ending any relationship. There is never any situation where issuing threats to someone you want to work with results in a future healthy relationship.
    2. Billing matters are rarely able to be handled as high priority. Usually within a day M-F business hours for simple matters, 2-3 for more complex matters. Something like completing verification for a highly abused or sanction relevant service could take 2-3 days and still be very reasonable in my books.

I've had mostly good interactions with Vultr. A few aspects of their technical implementation and their responses to suggestions (an example of this being in how they route certain lower quality peers) in that area have not been positive. However at-least unlike with some companies I felt like my suggestions were received.

It seems you are a master of discussion using typo mistakes as arguments. Maybe it would be better if you responded to real arguments. Do you not know that the USA has imposed a lot of sanctions not only against Russia, but also against a lot of other countries? Not only against countries, but also companies and even individuals. The EC is now requesting criminal punishment if authorities find violations with the settled sanctions. In such a case, it would not be surprising if the verification process was more rigorous and this required more time.
