Back in the late 90s I had a home server responsible for the internet with i386 and IIRC 4MB RAM
The thing was that back then our ISP gave unmetered internet from 5pm to 7am and during work day everything costed a fortune, so I had it scheduled to only start internet connection at 5:05pm and drop it at 6:55am
Used slackware (don't remember version), it was lighweight and worked flawlessly
@MrEd I have no idea from which country you are...
but we (South Africa) had a similar situation... it took us fairly long before home DSL became available and affordable.
So dial-up was for long the only option back then and regular calls per minute was quite expensive.
So they introduced what was called the "R7 plan" - which was weekdays after hours and all weekend, where any single local phone call, capped at ZAR7.00, which was the beginning of making Internet viable to more people from home for the first time.
And then you'd just hope your line doesn't drop and that you manage to go from Friday 6pm until Monday 6am with 1 single R7 call! :-)

This is a test on the nvme hard disk node
I'm from Lithuania. Back then even the DSL when they introduced it was limited by time... Yeah, weekends were also unmetered. And now I have 1Gbps at home, with no problem to upgrade to 2Gbps (but I don't really need that much
). Don't want to remember the dial-up, ADSL times...
Downloading something did take a week or two
Hello, I would like to double the bandwidth.

OLD GREGG!!!!
ya gotta free them
I was curious about that game - how did you like it?
mIRC, now that's a throwback
I remember on dial-up when things took forever to download
Moving like that would cause the bells to jingle
Anyways, that was a nice experience, when you were limited by everything
And it was fast information sharing channel...
On dial-up even html took forever, add images and you wait for whole eternity...
It's fun, especially when you play it friends.
I usually don't play these kinda games, but this one was definitely interesting.
Bumping this for our favourite provider!
Yup! And nice @ the 1gbps!
I'm also luckily at long last on fibre these days, but 1gbps is currently our top and most expensive option, and I'm still way down on the more affordable ~25mbps ...not brag worthy at all, but a vast improvement at least
Like 10 years ago we had 20Mbps down, 2Mbps up on A-DsL
Back to top, back to top!
Woah, hows the party going on here?
There's no party going on currently.
Well, there was some discussions going on, but since there was no Chef, no party was going on
@SillyGoose are you targeting the 5th place?
