Anyone else use domain expiry dates as project end dates?

I just let a number of domains expire. Along with that, I decided to move existing sites and data off and archive. The main factor, along with dwindling importance, was the domain expiry date, nothing more. It made me wish we could return a domain before the end of it's year and get credit for the next domain. The thing is, two other domains expire in June, so I'm letting those sites chug along rather than delete them simply because the domain is still active. Anyone else? Other "simple" factors you use to power off projects?
