  • Maybe its a bandwidth/network issue?

No, the server FPS is also very low. Should normally run at 40-50 fps. But now I only got 3 players on and server FPS is 17, which is considered low.

Yes that's what I also was thinking, take a look at Avoro.eu they have some rootservers with dedicated cores and ddos protection maybe that is also worth checking.

Yeah, their ryzen servers should work well. High clock speeds and plenty of ram. Not sure how good their ddos protection is.

  • The only host that I can think of at the top of my head who fits your needs and budget is @Shakib but he doesn't offer EU locations (yet...).

@MikeA also specializes in high-performing VPSes and game servers... maybe he has something in the EU?

My costs in Europe are way too high to offer anything near what he wants unfortunately. Really he's best off just grabbing a Hetzner auction server... can't beat their deals for high performing CPUs.

  • Decided to go with Avoro like a couple folks here recommended. They seem to offer exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks everyone for reaching out and helping me pick a server. This post can be closed.

Exactly, pricewise it's very difficult to find compared, but Hetzner is a solid company so actually iam happy to use them also support really good and fast

  • Thank you, will keep you updated.

    Regarding my old host;

I tried contacting them (ByteHosting) and they wouldn't even properly look into the issue for me, instead they kept blaming me on how I setup my server (which I know I've done correctly), and on the game I'm hosting. They wouldn't even bother checking their systems if somethings goofy is up. Then when I mentioned leaving them for a competitor they just started mocking me publicly in their discord. I recommend staying away from ByteHosting, very unprofessional support and under performing hardware.

  • If you still have the VPS with them, install linux and post a YABS if you're willing to. Just curious to know what the specs and benchmarks are.

I could do this once migrated, is this easy to do? Total linux noob :)

I must add, I currently rent this

    4vCPU • Ryzen 5900x
    16GB • RAM
    120GB • NVMe Storage
    1 • IPv4 Address
    1 • IPv6 /64 Subnet
    8TB • Bandwidth

and it's under performing heavily. I need something that can handle the load steadily that I put it under while gaming .Ram use seems to be at 14/15GB at max. CPU loads seem to spike to 80 when there's over 9 players on, and people start having major lag issues.

Is it actually the hardware which isn't suitable? Have you checked CPU-Steal and made a yabs? Maybe the provider is having some issues... overprovisioning for example.

I'm no expert on the subject, but I think it's the CPU not being able to keep up, or someone else on my box pushing his CPU over the top causing lag on my side. I'll have to look into the hetzner server auction but it's a bit over my budget.

We're way out of your target geo so I don't have anything to offer but I was interested so I took a quick look at specs (and just asked around to some game hosts). The modded part is the big question, but just talking a vanilla 7 Days to Die server:

    4-6 Cores ~4GHz
    ~12-16GB RAM
    and then NVMe (50+ GB)

You're basically going to be limited to 5950X/7950X territory if you need specs above that. Maybe some i7/i9 stuff but what worries me there is they rely pretty heavily on turboing up to reach the clock speeds you need. They should be fine, but I'd be looking at higher base clocks.

This also made me think about something like an E3-1270 v5/v6 up through to E3-1285 v6 as that will get you there on raw clock speed and the only "if" would be 4 cores / 8 threads limitation. I'm not sure if 4-6 cores recommended includes hyperthreading or not. I know we've had a basic E3-1270 v5 config w/2x 480GB SSDs available pretty close to your monthly budget ($35/m USD) as a dedi and you could probably find something similar in the EU via Hetzner or maybe someone like @berrybyte.

EDIT: Forgot to add that If you just wanted to see if an E3 works for 7DTD before you bite the bullet elsewhere, happy to let you test one for a day or two (just keep in mind latency not great).

Yes, this due to the server admin software (including discord bot) I'm using are tied to windows, and I'm not very familiar with Linux.

I see and understand that learning a new OS (especially one that uses CLI only when one is used to GUI interfaces) is a bit of a daunting task but i'd highly recommend you to invest some time into this if game hosting is something you take kind of serious. Windows wastes a lot of resources on a couple nice pictures and offers way less tuning potential/flexibility.

    Hello Y4nn1ck,

    I'm representing ByteHosting.

After researching this issue, I can understand that all the minimum requirements specified in this thread and other forums are all describing cores (dedicated cores) and not vCores (virtual cores). The service you purchased from ByteHosting is a VPS (Virtual Private Server) running on vCores.

We don't check your service as the likelihood of it being a one-off thing is very low and the likelihood of it being a lack of performance is much higher. After asking, you what performance you are seeing, you described a 100% usage in CPU in task manager when server was loaded. That is clearly a sign of a CPU bottleneck, meaning you need to upgrade the system, which we recommended. You are welcome to do a performance test of the server.

You describe our services as underperforming and that we over provision our systems and that is the reason for the lacking performance, which is completely unreasonable. We provide a live statistic of your server CPU usage (Node CPU). The usage is around 50% at all times, which is definitely not over provisioning. I would like to mention that running game servers on Windows is never recommended, and you should run this service on Linux. This can be achieved using SteamCMD, as you mentioned your service used.

I would like to address the accusation of "mocking me publicly in their discord".

    James (Staff): no sarcasm pls
James (Staff): @toaster is bytehosting support good?
    Toaster: Incident resolved (checkmark.gif attached)
James (Staff): Can I buy a verihost server from you?
Y4NN1CK: Y'all are fucking 12, maybe consider giving some actual support to paying customers.
Dyren: I can't see how James's message, to a whole other person, effects you.

Please let me know if there are missing details, and I will update my response.
This response is from what I could read in the ticket and in this thread. I will not share the ticket for obvious privacy issues.

    Sincerely,
    Philip @ ByteHosting

I might be full of shit here but I heard Counter Strike: Global Offensive (prior to the Source 2 port) runs better on Windows than Linux due to reasons related to threading or something. I don't do CS so I don't know much, but I thought the same situation applies here.

OP: No idea what server admin software you're using or if it's even truly necessary to admin a server, but definitely look at running a server on Debian (not even Ubuntu, just good ol Debian 11 or 12). Discord bots can run on any OS (unless whatever one you're using is compiled into an .exe for some reason). You also would save a lot of money from not paying for a Windows Server license too.

Well, not having dealt with this engine i'm mostly talking out of my ass but threading is a quite variable thing in Linux. I'd be surprised if it wasn't possible to tune it if needed. In any case Windows itself will come with a major resource footprint but who knows, maybe that's still offset in some way.

  • To add onto the negative review on bytehosting ; They just resell servers from Datalix, but provide immature and unprofessional support, and charge a lot more then Datalix. Stay far far away from Bytehosting :)

  • Would love to host your gaming servers. Let me know if we can help you put ;)

That's actually pretty decent, but yeah for more-demanding game servers you will probably want a GB6 of 2000+. @Shakib at HostCram can go up to 2800+ on a fully loaded node so if you ever need something in the US in the future (or whenever he opens an EU location), drop him a line.
