I'd love to see how it performs in a month. I purchased one a while ago and it started amazing but after a few weeks CPU steal went to 50%+ consistently, and Geekbench got greatly reduced. It might have been due to a huge influx of users since it was a new package then.
Even with that said, it really is a great deal.
I have been lucky on Contabo, so holding candle to light on this.
Contabo one has been having <10% steal for over 1.5 year.
Only thing I am finding interesting about webtropia is, both SSD and NVME for 4k seems to be locked at 10Mbps. Kind of funny.
Yeah, you're locked at 5K IOPS for any size. Not something you would knew unless you benchmark it in 99% of cases.
is there a way to install an OS via ISO or are you limited with the list of OS Webtropia offers?
Custom ISO is not possible there.
Just a fair warning to those that use Webtropia, but if you remove the QEMU Guest Agent or install another OS they will threaten to suspend the services:
With this guest agent they can make any changes to the guest OS, such as adding new users and changing passwords without the approval of the customer. They claim it is for security but nowhere in their terms they specify that the guest agent have to be installed to utilize their service.
Due to this I have a hard time to recommend their services, even if the price is good.
Oh Wow, that's a severe trust issue.
Though if a host really wants to get into your server, they can always use single user mode to do that.
Haha
Balooning doesnt work without qemu-guest-agent (at least in proxmox) so this "blahblah security" is "we want to oversell servers" in reality.
Sad that they waste their time to threathen one customer - seems like they oversell very hard and they need to send such mail.
What the fuck?
They FORCE you to use the qemu guest agent?!
Not even Microsoft azure is that strict and that's saying something.
Personally, I also think it's more of a security risk (from the customer's point of view) to have a guest agent installed, and I wouldn't have thought there were any vendors that enforced that.
Am I the only one who considers this an absolute nogo? I would be interested to know how others see it.
No, you're not the only one @RapToN.
The very first thing I do when I obtain a new VPS is purge all those qemu-guest-agent, cloud-init stuff and whatnot... I'm in for the infrastructure, not hand holding. And with properly configured rescue system and VNC console, there's nothing you can't do yourself.
I'm yet to see a provider who insists on running THEIR software on MY VPS. And it IS mine, as long as I'm paying for the service.
I suppose, based on the info above, that I never need to apply for Webtropia service (not that I ever intended to). They can freely spawn dozens of VPS and run qemu-guest-agents on them 24/7, I wouldn't want to spoil the fun for them.
