Um, there are at least two people in this thread using it today.
But yeah, the younguns are all runnin' around with Discourse these days. The good ol' forum concept isn't so flashy or pretty, but hey, it works great!
People keep mentioning forums they run...what/where are they?
Forums with segregated categories are so dead
szenebox.org (Looks like is based in SMF?)
HackForums (MyBB)
Sinister.ly (MyBB)
...
Those forums looks like they are active than some considered "Modern"
If you know how to customize and maintain SMF or MyBB it won't be a issue. Specially if you can have custom theme.
I understand if most people want to drive a Tesla (or if you don't like Musk, fill in whatever your favorite new car is).
SMF is like an old truck that keeps on going.
Teslas and old trucks can share the road. Nothing wrong with a Tesla. But old trucks work great when you need them.
User base about as sad as the software they’re built on in other words
There was one guy who made smf look like modern forum, but he moved on and is now the main core dev of flarum.
Flarum is not bad. But lacks of themes. (As you may know old boards had more support in the beginning)
Some themes aren't compatible with Flarum. Flarum looks great but Moderation features, posts features needs to be improved more.
Specially themes, most of them are not compatible.
I agree that homepage of SMF should be better and have another look...
oh really? I dont know this story. SMF stay alive strongly. I know it's still a lot used in university like from over 20y!
They had updated the forum to the recent versions? Or they remain in the old versions?
oh I don't have all this informations!
I worded it wrong, i meant he used to make pretty themes for smf but along the way i guess he got into flarum more and is now the main core dev for flarum.
What was his name on smf ?
Vanilla SMF might look old in terms of design but there are some 3d party themes which transform it to something unrealistic. So it's still a good forum choice.
If I can recall it correctly, Franz Liedke one of FluxBB core developer also had noticable contribution to flarum
