edited June 2023 in News

Hi,

SMF (SimplesMachineForum) a opensource forum. After major upgrade to 2.x they have been active and doing great things in their development.

A New version was out of box 2.1.4! Simple Machines is pleased to announce a new patch for the 2.1.x line of SMF, which pushes the version number to 2.1.4.

Notable changes in SMF 2.1.4

Attachments Upload UI enhancements - The UI used for uploading attachments is now easier to use, and a tad more aesthetic also.
Cron enhancements - When running cron as a crontab in unix, it will now check for scheduled tasks and possibly flush the mail queue, in addition to acting on background tasks.
jQuery upgrade - jQuery upgraded to 3.6.3.
Notifications bug - Fixed a bug where certain notifications were not getting delivered if a user subscribed to both a board and a topic within the board.
Editor bug - Fixed a bug where the cursor position may behave erratically when mentions exist in WYSIWYG mode.
Search bug - Fixed a bug caused by some non-backwards compatible behavior in PHP 8.0+ that might result in incomplete results.

Holy shit, SMF is still alive?
I remember moving some forums from YabbSE to SMF when they forked and that must be like 20 years ago.

    My first thought as well.

    Wikipedia:

On June 11, 2011, SMF 2.0 was released.

On February 9, 2022, SMF 2.1 was released.

Yes, the 2.1 was the major upgrade that a lot of people was doubt about it. Now they are in version 2.1.4 and 2.1.5 will be soon if someone help them and contribute ;)

Yes, they are. And still releasing new versions... 2.1.4 was recently.

You need to check the full version of 2.1 is completely changed. Themes ands mods still very "high" consideres for a opensource forum.

SMF runs on their own terms, but it is solid. There is always a lot more going inside the team than public can see but its different.
Though they are slow in new releases, long release cycle means your forum is going to be same for years as well as your all customization are going to stay for longer period unlike other softwares where with each new release a lot things breaks.

What a lovely way of saying ”11 year-old code is good”

To be honest. The forums I know that are using SMF even with old versions (not updated to 2.1) still around. I never saw a big forum using SMF be hacked like others forums.

For example MyBB is great but in the past they have been hacked (even small forums).

Phpbb is nice. But lacks in new themes and mods...

I must say if you put Phpbb, SMF and MyBB. All of them are great. But SMF was become more solid than before.

I've always been a fan of phpbb but they changed it quite a bit.

YaBB ... Now that's something I've not seen in forever.

I remember publishing some YaBB mod back in like... 2004 or 2005. I remember being in High School and trying to learn CGI/perl. Basically just showed users online in the sidebar instead of the footer, or something. I forget. (Just copy/pasting code, not so much writing anything... haha)

SMF I've always enjoyed. I don't like the flashy modern forums. I like the old familiar layout and features many of us have used for a long time.

  • UI reminded me of warez-bb forum which i used to be active during 2008-09.

  • That was the first forums software I ever used. I'll always remember you.

Hm, does all those high peofile forum breaches was for MyBB? I bet SMF was also a victim. For some reason I prefer xenforo.

Anything human made == Vulnerable. PHP vulnerability is a result of it's popularity paired with developers negligence.

I never saw a big SMF forum being hacked. Like others. I know that everything can be hacked. But is rare the big forums that was hacked using SMF.

Of course if owner are stupid and use easy passwords that can go wrong. But I don't remember.

If you take a look in SMF Themes and mods there many but many available. The 2.1 was a big update.

If you never used them try to use for testing. SMF is solid and stable.

I used to run a pretty big YaBB in the 90's and did some mods and customizations to it, so when first YabbSE and then SMF came out a lot of people turned to me for help with converting their forums.
Cant say that I miss Perl, what an awful language that was.

I agree! I recently tested a bunch of forum software, and ended up going with SMF for a small project, and while it may not have all the bells and whistles and shiny features of some other platforms, it has been simple, solid, and stable for me. If the "old school" feature set fits your needs, it's pretty good!

MyBB for example was gained many attraction due to HF and other hacking forums (most of them is using MyBB)

MyBB is not bad, is Good for what it is. But I really doubt if they haven't used by HF and old famous hacking forums they are what they are now.

SMF have a lot of features (for his free version), a tons of themes and mods (some needs some updates) due to 2.1 version.

The only cons I can see in SMF is there are low amount of premium themes compared with others. (Isn't bad at all)

I only tested 2.1 not the current version 2.1.4 but looks good and amazing.

SMF has been solid for me for a very long time. It's built with functionality first which I like. I have used Flarum lately on some forums, but I always end up using SMF. Very solid.

  • Wow! They still resist! SMF it's very robust forum software but need to update the theme! Seems, like mybb, stopped to 2000s!

Jesus that's quite the long running. I didn't realize it was still in use. I ran a lot VBulletin back in the day. I helped admin on a few SMF forums for a while and it scaled really well but I didn't realize that either was still popular. I really only hear of people using Xenforo and Discouse now a day.
