OVH silently changing bandwidth options for GAME servers.

Hello,

I noticed that OVH has a new product list page and since then the bandwidth of the GAME server line-up changed from "1Gbps unmetered" to "250 Mbps unmetered (burst 1 Gbps)"

I asked OVH support if this was an error on their website and they confirmed the bandwidth for new GAME server orders will be only 250Mbps with a 1Gbit "burst" sinds last week.

They said the bandwidth of servers ordered before the changes will still have a 1Gbit unmetered connection. But I would double check that if you have a GAME-1 or GAME-2 server at OVH.

Think twice before you buy this, its a bad deal for this price.

Edit
Of course OVH can't do anything right and their order page still says "1Gbit unmetered"

  • ADVANCE-3 seems to be a better deal. What's difference between the GAME lineup and others? DDOs protection?

"GAME" ddos protection is indeed the difference between the GAME and Advance line up. The 5900X is indeed a way better deal, basically destroying their own product.

Just curious, I am not running game servers now, but back in the day the BW needs were way lower, do you really need 1 Gbps or that is more for downloading the client or things like that? For how many players, what kind of a game?

GAME DDoS protection = UDP Game Protection
TCP is the same on any OVH Dedi

  • Kind of a deja vu https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/158739/ovh-double-bandwidth-guarantee-no-longer-guaranteed

Speaking from experience, if you're not cool with this change, ask for a refund now. If you're in a contract or engagement, ask for it to be cancelled now. This policy will eventually trickle down to existing servers of the same model, if it hasn't already. The tech support will not fix any bandwidth issues you have, regardless of whether you bought this server before the new bandwidth policy. The network department at OVH just does what they want and all the different departments: Tech, billing, sales, network etc. do not work well with each other.

  • My account manager was able to tell me more then the billing department. False alarm

For most games you don’t need nearly 1gbps unless you have huge maps or something that need to be downloaded by many clients, but even then 1gbit is probably not necessary. Take Minecraft for example, 99% of servers would not need more than 50mbit/s

Our FiveM/CFX Server uses an absurd amount of BW when streaming custom assets. With 128 players we can see anywhere between ~100-400Mbps sustained. Like you said, this is not normal and most servers need no where near that.

Yeah, we also have big FiveM servers with up to 1000 players and consumption of 1-2,5 GBit/s including Voice.

  • Yep. I once had a very popular Rust server that used up a ton of bandwidth.

Can anyone confirm this? It's been a very long time since I got any ddos attacks but I was always curious if this was indeed the only difference as all my apps are using TCP and I'm dropping all UDP traffic with the firewall rules.

GAME protection only makes sense if your game server is on UDP, if it's on TCP, it won't change anything at all

Many pests attack each other via bypass from the internal OVH network. This is a problem when they can flood traffic and clog the channel so much that the server is simply unavailable.

  • FlorinMarianFlorinMarian Member, Host Rep

I can confirm that's not a advertise issue.
Just ordered GAME-1 at 115 + VAT/mo and bandwidth was somewhere at 250Mbps with wget from proof.ovh.net
Had a phone call with OVH support and they said that 1Gbps is not guaranteed even for internal traffic.
    They proceed with refund.

Hi, have you got any response from them?

I ended up refunding 30 servers I ordered from them.

Can you send me a link of where did you go ? I need an alternative too.

    Thank you

  • That's sad. 250Mbps doesn't make sense with dedicated server of that spec.

Yeah, it's like putting brand new hardware on 2010 uplink :')

there are so many good alternatives :)

Which one do you recommend with great ddos protection for game server in l7 then?

  • Called it back in Jan. "Account Manager" is probably the most useless role at OVH. They are always ill-informed, ill-equipped and are shunned by other departments when looking for communication. If anything makes it to the front-page of the French website, it has been approved by the VP of Sales and nothing can be done to roll it back, at least not by any account manager. Good on OP to get a refund and get out.

OVH limits configurations on the Game line dedicated servers to limit other use cases that aren't ideal to them.

At OVH, account managers are just glorifies sales reps who have access to talk to other teams, but have no actual power.
