Looking for a VPS to run PLEX & EMBY
Hi,
As the title says i am looking for a vps with good CPU and a reasonal storage space to run PLEX & EMBY
Singapore preferred but not necessary. (I know singapore is expensive)
Currently using KS-1 but not good enough. Can't play x265 files init. Other than it's great.
Looking for
Good CPU with multiple cores
2GB or higher RAM
At least 1TB HDD
1TB or higher Bandwidth with 1Gbps port
Thanks.

Hi,
If necessary, our S SSD G3 AMD (https://php-friends.de/vserver-ssd) with a network storage (e.g. storage box from Hetzner or our internal storage boxes (1 TB -> 6.90 EUR incl. 19% VAT).

@PHP_Friends any promo?
Currently actually not, we are as good as sold out But there will soon be a few promotions again.
Takes too much CPU for transcoding? How about direct playback ?
I have Plex setup in top of pi 3b, it works great but you have to use direct playback—otherwise it's gonna buffer a lot. I imagine ks-1 have the same limitation
Same buffering with direct playback
I think @Hybula is your best bet. Their network is some magical concoction of wizardry. Nothing buffers for me in south Asia using direct play for anything. And it saturated my pipe whenever I download something from the server.
Edit: damn I now wish we don't have cpu smashers on hybula. Double edged sword.
Easiest solution would be to look for x264 webdl encodes
Work on your rclone mount command if using some cloud storage as mounted folder/drive
And whats your budget? You have not mentioned in your org post.
Not an exact budget but expecting Less than $15/month.
maxkvm?
Maxkvm IIRC does not offer storage vps.
Depends on whether you are smart or otherwise. Latter may affect service
I’m using plex on a remote VPS in Germany 🇩🇪 and I’m connected from the United Kingdom. 🇬🇧
Using:
KVM
1 vCore @ 3.50+ GHz
1 GB Ram
20 GB SSD
1Gbit Connection
with extra disk space added for data.
Home:
Roku TV
30mbps Fibre
My transcoding only works fine on 3Mbps at 720p (Medium) setting and direct play only works if the video bitrate isn’t too high or I will receive playback errors.
oops missed that part. @servarica_hani has been pretty amazing with their storage.
x265 direct streaming = x264 direct streaming.
There's no difference if CPU doesn't transcode.
Seems like it is still transcoding, check your config first.
Direct streaming is just sending packets, codec makes no difference.
That’s what I thought. Because I stream x265 files on Plex TV/Phone apps all the time and sometimes 4K files too without any buffering. Playback on browsers might be different though.
15$/Month!!!!
Way too much imo
You can get really really good servers.
you can go with this
https://i.imgur.com/jFPgpLX.png
https://oneprovider.com/dedicated-servers/unmetered-bandwidth
I have used this server in past. Pushed more than 100TB/month public torrent seeding
Public torrents download and seeding also works great without any abuse report from provider.
Its CPU can handle 2 transcode simultaneously. Bandwidth speeds are also great (My avg was 40MBps aka 320-400 mbps through out the day 24*7 ).
You are getting double the disk you are looking for.
All resources are dedicated. No one will complain/create issue in name of fair-use
Edit:- added link to website. No affiliation.

You need to modify some settings in plex/emby to avoid unnecessary transcoding.
I use emby. So.....if you need help regarding emby, hit me in DM and I will try my best to help you
But I have no idea about plex. Sorry.
(I installed and used plex. Did not like a lot of things about it. So I shifted to emby. Liked emby so much that I ended up buying its lifetime pass (my 2nd biggest spend for techy stuff)
Just curious, what's the first one?
Someone told me to get this plan from one provider. Price similar to KS-1 but with 1gbps unmetered (currently on sale, hence this discount).
Koofr 1TB lifetime
That's Scaleway old trash Avotons (Intel Atom). They aren't really 1gbps unmetered.
I have used that server for more than 6 months. Cpu is crap. Like literally crap.
I had to use it because of only 1 thing:- They do not have any issues with public torrent seeding.
It is a budget dedicated server just for running plex. If you are not doing too much transcoding it should be handled fine!
Nope. It cant handle even direct streaming properly. I have tested it
Ah okay
Then why are you recommending it to OP to run Plex and Emby on?
I mentioned OP regarding a different server costing 14$/month.
@tmepy was talking about a 5.5$/month server from same provider.
Kimsufi's network is garbage so I'm not surprised.
Having said that, make sure you're using direct play or direct stream. On your client, it should be set to stream in original quality. You can completely turn off transcoding in the Plex Server settings for testing purposes.
If all else fails, you could also re-encode your videos at a lower bitrate
x265 is better of course, since its compression is better (less bandwidth required = more likely to get a solid stream)
