I really need to go through and make some time for updating templates to set password requirements and change default SSH port.

But then everyone would reinstall their OS via either netboot or dd after the service has been provisioned, and continue on their merry way...

This password without SSH CA or Pubkey auth? That's simpler than my home smart lock entry password lmao

    Maybe Musk is too kind

Maybe the SpaceX Falcon launch code is also 12345678

I mean at that point I'm OK with it because it means they know how to do something other than clicking a re-install button.

I'd wager that most people who know how to even install from ISO know not to set an insecure password.

Copying from a password manager should be more convenient than setting an insecure password.

Or SSH Keys, especially when 1Password have direct support for SSH Key and there's also Small step hosted SSH CA that can replace single pubkey with SSH CA...

On a side note, I've yet to discover how to use Small step or 1Password with xShell, so any suggestions on that is appreciated.

Yep, I guess that usually works with other hosts so we get that a lot but it indicates the complete opposite of what people think.

Actual mistakes/misunderstandings that can usually be resolved have a very detailed explanation and that's the type of unsuspension that has lowest risk of re-abuse. Highest risk is always the "I didn't do anything" crowd. I mean of course I still feel bad for them but ...

Sounds like you probably got hacked. What was your password? I mean no need to say it here but think about it.

Right now for unsuspensions we're only accepting ones where password is provided on the ticket, looks secure, and we can log in and see what happened. Too many of these, I guess a lot of people setting up their VM and then not securing it since it's new.

I just did look at your ticket since you're Elon Musk, and it doesn't look like you were hacked based on the usual abuse that goes on when people are but it's even worse, 50%+ I/O util for a day plus. Your VM was the one causing major problems on TYOC036. So I'll let other people on TYOC036 chime in on if you should be unsuspended but normally in this case it would be permanent because the $25 abuse fee is greater than the plan cost and no one usually wants to pay that.

I think I get it, my password is simple: 12345678

    Can you help me recover?

On the todo list. I’ll see if I can just return networking to normal again right now within the next hour and then focus on figuring out why it’s crashing. Probably has to do with CPU lockups. Seems to be an issue with both 5950X servers but it might be causing this one to crash.

This has been down for a very long time. We've scheduled a migration here (without data for now) and we're going to recreate services on Ryzen and add additional months of service for the long outage.

Emergency maintenance completed and it's looking a lot better. This was due to the 5950X issue I described a long long time ago that I feared, but it was easy to fix because the BIOS was on the wrong settings; it had reset at some point in time during setup. I don't remember but perhaps it was updated or CMOS was removed. So it's not that it's performing bad or worse at the datacenter, it was actually already doing way better with the real-world usage versus my extreme simulated testing, and had a minor version of those temperature issues.

Anyway, it was trying to do the thing it does where it "overclocks" itself except this ends up overheating it and then it starts thermal throttling and creating a chain reaction of spikes that may be to blame for the CPU soft lockups and the crashes.

I've loaded in the correct settings and CPU temps are 20-30 degrees less. Of course this also means the clockrate is now ~3.9-4.0GHz instead of ~4.3-4.4GHz but still above base clock of 3.4GHz and it actually looks like CPU usage also dropped by about 5% but we'll need more time to see if that's actually the case or if it's just temporarily lower right now.

I'll try to keep a closer eye on this throughout th day and if it crashes again we'll look into the other possibilities.
