You can blame their firmware or implementation or things like that but not the NAND. The NANDs are all sourced from the same few brands and they are not stupid enough to sell "bad" NANDs. Also, what really gives them the nice benchmark speeds is by using the unused space as SLC cache so having a mix of good and bad NANDs wouldn't work out anyway.

I haven't looked into it much so that was just a guess.

But you're right, I spent a few minutes looking everything up to try to form a better guess, and it uses 176 layer Micron VNAND so it's not the NAND that's an issue. Except it also uses an InnoGrit IG5236 controller which it shares with other drives that do not have the same problem. And SLC cache is supposed to be around 600GB+ and 2GB RAM.

I actually don't know much about how the controller tries to fill each cell. I assume it tries to level them out as well as it can but does it go per cell? If so maybe that would explain it having troubles after filling 300GB, it fills half the SLC for one cell and then fails to move onto the other?

But again it's the same controller as disks that work fine. And it's Micron NAND. So I don't know.

If you really have 600 GB of SLC cache then it's using 1.8 TB of TLC. But it doesn't matter even if you use up more space and have less SLC cache, it slows things down but won't disconnect your drive. The wear levelling is probably done by the controller. What's causing you issues could be something silly like firmware compatibility with the mobo, thermal issues or even the kernel version. The drives might work perfectly fine on your non-ryzen servers so at least you can reuse them or resell them hopefully.

They do have the worst firmware, at least in our use case so far. Looks like I'm going to be using them in my personal RAID10 gaming rig. Now to wait for a controller that supports that many of them.

I guess I could just connect them to a MegaRAID 9560 and just have 3M 4K IOPS.

Actually if I can get them working with a controller or two, or four, maybe I can finally set up a ridiculous storage node somewhere.

We can probably hit 40GB/s and pair it with a 40Gbps burst connection and sell it as a database line or a "I don't know what I'm going to do with this" line of promotional plans.

(edit) Hey maybe we can even get WHMCS functional on something like that.

Something besides Tokyo - I got my Denver VPS with 384 MB RAM - thanks @VirMach :)

I installed Debian 10 template to make sure CPU passthrough mode is activated. Then I used netboot.xyz to install Debian 11 Netinstall in (very :D ) low RAM mode without any unnecessary stuff. It worked fine - so here we go with a yabs. I like it :)

then why don't you have any updates on that location?

  • VirMachVirMach Member, Patron Provider

Psychz Chicago Update - We were told that they only had 2 x 20A x 120V power available here, and not 208V. So we proceeded. We shipped in 2 x 20A/120V PDUs. They replied back telling us something about Los Angeles (confused sales person trying to answer a provisioning team ticket for some reason) and then followed up with someone else saying [A] we don't have a cabinet in Chicago either, and [B] they only have 208V in Chicago so the PDUs won't work.

    slow clap

  • @VirMach Any action on pre-sale storage orders? You shipped or not for JP ?

Los Angeles - There's a reason this isn't up yet and I'll leave it for you guys to guess. Just remember who it's with... I could drive there I guess but I'm trying to avoid getting sucked into that with everything else going on right now.

Actually I won't leave it for you guys to guess. Psychz ignored our requests about trying to get 40Gbps here, so it's not compatible with the switch. We sent in another switch, and Psychz likes to do this thing where every time they get a package they ignore everything that was said about that location and the general setup plan and acts like every single time they have no idea what needs to be done, so every single package they receive they liked creating a ticket where they ask you what you want to do with the item. If you don't reply and tell them on that ticket that you want it specifically placed into the cabinet, they will just store it and charge you a storage fee. Now, in this case, that ticket I'm speaking of is completely broken on their system and due to the way their system works I did also completely miss it (that last bit is my fault.) They sort tickets by creation date and not last reply, whatever.

Okay I have a headache now and I didn't even get to finish my story. Just assume I'm doing it on purpose and it's all my fault.
