@jbiloh Is there enough funding to facilitate a migration to a new platform?

Should be. I offered help and he didn't even bother to PM me.

Disclaimer, I worked for Tapatalk for 5 years as the head SysAdmin. I know forums every well.

Its BS as usual. He'll do it himself and if anything goes wrong, blames it on something else.

Respect for your skills Mike, but Jon posted it 3 days ago, my friend didn't get a reply either. Most likely no one did in THREE days.

He's going to need a week minimum, probably more to give others a chance to bid on this.

    Thicker skin my guy.

You mean you said "Feel free to PM me" on Friday and he had WHOLE SATURDAY to PM you (even tho maybe you should be one PMing him about his job offer) but didn't ??? The audacity

Modifying anything, carries a life long technical debt of maintenance and updates.

    +1

If you do want to modify a platform, make sure it has proper extensibility support, rather than having to directly modify core files. For example, I know many people dislike WordPress, but its plugin system is one reason it's so popular. Plugins are completely separate to the core code, and if a plugin messes something up then you can just uninstall it and everything will be back to normal.

@TWC said: Basically, just think about it, but if you do go with XenForo -- you will have a certain peace of mind and ease knowing that you're going to be fine (to a point) because huge brands like IGN are on it, and it's pretty much the only serious community software left standing

This is a good point, just keep in mind that some of the time, big brands / large forums are on particular forum software because it'd be very hard to move to something else, so the migration is not really worth it.

In terms of what I actually see most often across the web, Xenforo is quite rare. The most popular these days seem to be Discourse (used by Twitter dev, HomeAssistant, BoingBoing, Let's Encrypt, Zoom, New Relic, Unreal Engine, etc) and NodeBB (Ubisoft, Bethesda, TheDailyWTF, Qt, etc).

I used to be a developer on SMF, but in my opinion that generation of forum software (SMF, phpBB, vBulletin, IP.Board) are definitely past their heyday now. Vanilla is fine but it's showing its age a bit, at least from a user perspective.

Hey @MikePT! Great to see you here! Did you have a chance to consider my April 4 message in the PM thread with @jbiloh and you and me? I don't seem to find any reply from you to @jbiloh and me. Best wishes from Mexico! 👍
