So no more new hosts, new discoveries, one-time deals from those, etc ... just same old boring residential hosts spamming from now on. Can it get more boring?

Do you really want to be using a hosting provider who cannot allocate $16/month to their marketing budget?

You mean 80% of the hosts on here?

You just turned LET into WHT.

Same 10 providers, posting the same deals. Killing the entire idea and benefit of LET.

Queue @deank as apparently he was right all along.

That's not the point and the argument should really be "why, use such a cheap VM" you're forgetting that's your core audience.

You basically just took a shit on your core advertisers/audience.

@stefeman said: YOLO all the way. Half of the community would even buy from cociu again if its cheap enough.

Me included.. Its a guilty pleasure of ours.

    Hah, fair point.

But I also bet that cociu would pay $16.

@ChristianDSH said: I've come from the dephts of inactivity because of that invoice. Still thinking if i should get active here again, since when i would pay for the tag it better be worth it and not idle

However i don't have any metrics how many people actually came from LET to me, so i don't know if it's worth it.

But supporting a project is always nice, in the first moment i honestly thought its some kind of spam email trying to rip off money especially since it's sent with a gmail address.

Thanks for being open to it.

  • If a business can't afford to pay $200 a year in advertising, that's not a business.

If you can't justify spending $200 a year on this traffic source, use another, that's capitalism.

Conversion rates are poor, what will happen is less providers will engage as there are much better ways to get sales than LET.

    I'm happy you think so.

But as someone who has had apparently over 14k visits on here (daym!) and has purchased a metric shit ton of servers from providers on here - I can tell you that it will definitely not.

Because the moment you lose the providers (and you most definitely will) - you will lose me and people like myself.

You are about to singlehandedly destroy LET and put it in a position, from which there will be no turning back.

There are plenty of alternatives, so think very hard before you implement this. WHT died out quickly, don't go that route.

  • Honestly speaking this reminds me of when jbiloh took over let and all the negativity surrounding it. My opinion hasn't much changed and present actions reinforce that this site should be run by anyone else (preferably multiple people).

    Dear soon-to-be Host Reps

You can advertise on https://pushups.ndn.today without paying $200.
Record a video of you doing push-ups and introduce your offer verbally and in transcript.
Our conversation rate is higher than industry average.

The community has dealt with management shananigans, with AlphaRacks scams, with the QN/CC 50 company scam, but we stayed because of the little providers on here. And some bigger ones.

And you're about to remove the last reason to come on here.

Obviously you've made up your mind.

As I said - there are plenty of alternatives. Good luck with your sales though. I am sure at some point providers will be happy to pay $200/yr to post offers to all 10 of you frequenting this site.

Uh huh. You're welcome to remove my provider tag. I guess host rep is close enough. Thanks.

Now, what about a different route, make something called LET Premium, make it open for both users and providers, charge a small amount annually, maybe $19.99/year, make it ad-free and allow some other little perks, idk what those would be, maybe only allow signatures for paying users, you'd probably have a lot more adoption and not alienate any providers.

Great suggestion and something to consider for sure. Vanilla sort of limits the cool things we can do but will investigate it.

Why not charge for per advertisement post + some Low-end charges for provider tag.

    Say,
    Tier 1 (less frequent poster)
$15 yearly for tag + $10 per advert post

    Tier 2 (more frequent poster)
$30 yearly for tag + $5 per advert post.

It will lower the entry bar but still not free. Probably everyone will keep their provider tag with that price and yet will give more money to LET when a new advert post is made.

    ........

    @jbiloh said:

Management and oversight of such an approach would be extremely time intense given our current software implementations.

    Only when its all manual.

I have not managed vanilla but have experience with few others (open source as well paid).

You need to manage two major thing for above setup to work :

    1. Ability to only let "Providers Start Thread in Offer Section" :
Almost all forum has feature to allow posting in certain forum if he has certain tag / membership. Most can even do with paid membership without external software.

    2. Count posts or limit posts based upon payment :
For that, immediate solution could be Manual moderation of each OFFER posted. But long term and easier would be "Adding a new small feature which keeps counter for number of paid posts user may have" .

Its broad logic may go as :
User can buy "New Thread" credits in advance through your billing panel (I suppose you have WHMCS), its API then can connect to forum and update counter for allowed paid posts or other way if WHMCS is not friendly. Now whenever a user starts new posts in that OFFER section, his account can be checked for PAID posts he may have and can start new thread.

For coding all that, you can easily find a Vanilla coder well under $50 or so (one time) as it will not be a big mod or plugin.

@jbiloh please downgrade my account to HostRep if possible.

Mostly from principle - I don't know why you bothered to create a "Feedback Request" thread if you had already decided it was happening. At no point was an announcement made (unless I've missed it but I have tried to monitor the thread - if I have please can you link the post and accept my apologies) that invoices would be sent out and people given the option to opt-in. Your email/invoice is essentially spam.

  • The ultimate finale is when @jbiloh unleashes the collection agencies after unpaid invoices if people had not requested to be demoted into host reps.

Fair point and would have been better to send out another email rather than rely on the announcement thread alone.

I think the funniest thing in this entire situation is that, after the provider tag cleanup you tried to keep it hidden from general users and it only needed one idle provider to leak the entire thing and the drama was ready. If there was proper public announcement, people could at least discuss and protest this in name rather than finding themselves pants down in the forest.

The platform is totally fine. Does not need any improvement. Simply ask for donations to keep this forum online and run ads... Should be sufficient. Only my 2 cents...

We could use @jsg and similar for this. He can do other things than being a Russian troll, for example, providers which don't want to pay can simply send him a request to test a vm and he can post here.
It is what LEA did, found new providers with good deals. @jsg doesn't even need to search, providers would send him VMs to test. Or someone else, preferably a neutral person.
Maybe we can even elect someone for the job.

I think this is the best of two worlds, dustinc can have his paid threads, we can have our own thread with vms tested and ranked, people could vote, etc.

I guess Host Rep is close enough for me.

I rarely post offers because this isn't our target market. For $200 I could put it somewhere else in the business.

This seems very rushed, urgent and forced.
