Which providers allow IRC servers?

I got a request to change the LEB offer template to have providers indicate whether they allow hosting IRC servers or not.

I think that's a pretty niche need and not worth calling out in every single offer, but maybe it would be good to create a list of providers that allow IRC.

I spot checked a few providers.

Allows:

  • BuyVM does (@Francisco) makes no mention so I assume it's OK.
  • I didn't see anything in Vultr's or Linode's AUP.
  • Nothing in RackNerd's AUP (@dustinc)
  • HostHatch's AUP also doesn't mention it (@hosthatch).

Does Not Allow:

  • SecureDragon (@KuJoe) does not allow IRC servers (From AUP: "You may not run IRC (Internet Relay Chat) servers (clients/bouncers are allowed)").
  • NexusBytes (@seriesn) disallows any IRC activities (From AUP: "IRC and associated applications (including bouncers, "bots", etc.)").
  • LetBox also disallows IRC (From AUP: "No public IRC, VPN and Proxies but We do allow private")

Yes, it would be nice to have a compiled list of providers who do allow IRC or at least allow on a case-by-case basis, under certain exceptions.

@raindog308 - that list is too scrambled. Please group 'em up. (allows  \ disallows :disappointed: \ unknown :grimace: )

I love IRC. Grew up on it.
A bit off-topic, but apart from bouncers, is anyone still running their own IRC servers? Have the majority not moved to things like discord and Matrix, etc...?

    We do allow aswell.

Same mate, I think I probably started when I was 11 or 12, on IRCnet and EFnet in the mid 90s - I'm still on it though :joy:

I doubt, but maybe just a handful still operate a small private network.

However the major networks are still somewhat alive.

The question is rather, who has a working DDoS protection in place, that could tank a few gigabits.

  • I like the idea of this list 👍 brings back irc memory’s haha

  • If I remember correctly @AlexBarakov allows IRC for personal usage

@EvolutionHost used to offer managed IRCd.
Now it can be self-hosted on VPS.

Path's subsidiary Tempest Hosting LLC allows IRC.

    Full TOS for Tempest: https://tempest.net/tos

Is this still a thing? Haven't people moved on DDoS'ing other things? Or why would an IRC server be more likely to be DDoS'ed than a web forum? (or maybe it's much easier to take down a web forum by just saturating the underlying DB, whereas for an IRC server you have to saturate the whole network - so the damage for the forum DDoS is much more localised?)

Please go to a political channel, say your critical opinion.
Then sit down and watch, good way to test your AntiDDoS.

Like (presumably) most providers I'm happy to have IRC servers in my networks. As long as i don't have to deal with any abuse reports/notices, ddos attacks,... as a result...

  • The IRC is a part of my life :$
I usually check the provider's TOS/AUP before order a service. If a provider not mention or not disallow the IRC processes obviously in their TOS/AUP, I usually use them (ZNC, eggdrop, etc).

If I remember correctly, Virtono not allow any IRC processes in their AUP.

  • I would just go for BuyVM + Path.

We allow personal usage on all dedicated IP plans.

No problem running irc clients or ircd's with us. :)

    Cute.
    Who did you piss off?

  • From InceptionHosting's ToS:

You are not allowed to use IRC server, clients or other IRC related services on any VPS server located in the USA unless over IPv6

IOW, not allowed in the US over IPv4, otherwise allowed.

I have been running a discord-irc bridge (to a private IRC network) in NL for half a year now and have not received any complaints so far.

Unlikely you going to be hit with 1Tbit+, especially if you run a small IRC network.

You'd be surprised, I've seen one IRC network get smacked around 100Gbps in the past year... always best to have more than what you need.

Its a small percentage risk, that someone gets hit with 3 figure or higher Gigabits.
Most DDoS attacks, according to the statistics, are 10Gbit or lower.

Depending on your Setup as we see here, a 1gig does it too, internally on OVH's network.
