Oh for pork sake, fucking porkbun.

Instead of suspending domains based on google, you are now suspending domains based if they are listed on spamhaus? seriously?

"porkbun.com | Domain flagged for suspicious activity: Spamhaus DBL"

    "Hello there,

We wanted to let you know that the domain blablablabla dot net was listed on the Spamhaus blacklist (https://www.spamhaus.org/dbl/)

First up, don't panic! Porkbun did not place you on this list, we're just reporting what we were told. We probably haven't taken any action against your domain unless it's hosted with us and could be negatively affecting other customers. Please note, if the domain remains listed for too long we may have to suspend it. Furthermore, domains can sometimes get listed as the result of a false positive. Please keep reading, we'll tell you how to fix it.

According to Spamhaus, here's the reason this domain was flagged:

    • spam domain

    Here's what to do next:

    1. Make sure nobody is using your domain for evil purposes. A previous owner of your domain may have used the domain to send spam. Or, if your domain isn't using an SPF record, someone might be sending spam spoofed to look like it was sent from your domain.

    2. De-list the domain at Spamhaus. Once you're sure the domain is not being used improperly, you can submit your de-listing request here: https://www.spamhaus.org/lookup/

Please note that if we receive a complaint, or the domain remains listed for too long, we may have to suspend it. Please reply to this message if you require more information.

    Thank you,
    The Porkbun Team"

Even if they are fucking expired, somehow the domain still manages it to get listed on spamhaus and you spam me? jesus fucking pork bun christ.

This is why I am have trouble trusting porkbun. It seems like they really want to suspend you, more than other registrars.

@Neoon The domain didn't get suspended and we don't suspend based on simply being listed on Spamhaus for obvious reasons. However, yes, we did send you an email letting you know that you're listed and that you should probably get that resolved. Usually when this happens we end up getting a report of phishing, which we are required to take action on. However, if your domain is simply listed on Spamhaus we do not suspend but we do send you a notice. Have yourself a good one!

We actually don't. We had a couple of false positives in the past and changed how we do things. You know, because you live and you learn and you adapt. When a policy of ours doesn't work we change it. The only time a domain gets suspended is when it's doing something illegal in our jurisdiction like phishing, child pornography, botnet C&C, etc OR when it's hosted on our infrastructure doing things that negatively affect other customers like spamming, malware infection, or anything that might compromise an IP and get it blacklisted. We're striving for perfection, like many on this board have already achieved, and hope to get there some day.

First Google, now this. I guess they don't like simple and stable services anymore. They want to bother their own clients with warnings now. So much for trusting their own customers until legally proven otherwise.

Except, if you read the post, the email is full of threats of suspension and relates to a domain which has apparently expired. Saying you "probably" haven't taken action unless it's hosted with you, and that you "may" have to suspend it anyway isn't exactly what you described.

I tend to agree. There are times when they will blacklist every domain hosted on a single IP because one domain is doing something nefarious. They have a lot of false positives which is why we don't take action simply by being listed and only use it in combination with other abuse such as phishing. Most customers are thankful for the notifications we send, however I can see it being annoying as well. Given the recent changes at Spamhaus and their listing of domains only sharing an IP, I'm inclined to stop checking against it all together. That said, a domain being listed on it is an issue for the domain owner because it can and does harm it by simply being listed.

    Aha!
I see, my thought I had before was right.

Since the domain expired, its pointing to your servers and so I end up with spam in my mailbox, because some malignant shitfunnel did send spam emails before and got the IP's blacklisted.

That's a good point, thank you. I've changed the verbiage of the email to reflect our actual policy. It now states "We haven't taken any action against your domain for merely being listed." instead of "We probably haven't taken any action against your domain unless it's hosted with us and could be negatively affecting other customers."

We may stop sending this email altogether, or at least modify who gets it since an expired domain should probably not be getting it at all.

That appears to be exactly what happened :( The shitfunnels win again, I'm turning this off. I'm not sure how long Spamhaus has been listing every single domain on a shared IP, but it's really bad and makes it completely unreliable.

First of all, registrars are not first in the line when it comes to abuse. And some things should never be registrars/registries duty like which side of the fence(political and other things) they want to be on. When they try enforcing anything they become stupid, a fucking stupid.

Disclaimer: I ruled out using Porkbun for myself. I explained the reasons elsewhere.

One of the problems that I am seeing here is that PorkBun is not doing a good job documenting their policies in a way that customers understand those policies up front.

Another problem that I observed is that the email messages are confusing to customers. I was going to suggest that @oborseth review their wording, but oborseth already acknowledged that they were going to work on them.

@oborseth said: I'm disabling the whole thing. Spamhaus simply has too many false positives.

Finally, it appears that PorkBun has been following a "seat-of-the-pants" methodology for implementing policy. That can't be good for a domain registrar. How much planning or testing went into PorkBun's policies before they were deployed? Do they have a process? Why didn't PorkBun run tests and determine that Spamhaus sends too many false positives BEFORE activating the policy?

-> Clearly Porkbun needs to work on their domain suspension policies and process, customer communications, and customer notifications.

  • Their policy are absurd to say the least. Had a domain with them with Google SafeBrowsing flag, domain's DNS zone was removed voluntarily because it was not needed or used at that time, yet they still spammed me all day about that domain.
Then they had a bug in their panel which would not update newer IPs on the glue records for the domain running the nameservers. Only way to deal with that was to remove the glue and re-create them with the correct new IP's. Guess what, Porkbun force-updated all domains using those namesevers to some random nameservers of their own which did not even do an AXFR beforehand to avoid downtime. The result... 180 websites went down.
I sucked it up and accepted the need to do several hours of work to put everything back.
However, the last one was where I drew the line with them.
A year later their overly incompetent abuse department gets a phishing report about the very same domain handling the nameservers which was simply redirecting to a shared server IP. The hosting provider, however, did not get any sort of complaints and reports and neither did the AS owner, although all have public abuse emails, just Porkbun supposedly got the report.
They send a notice overnight, on a weekend without any details, just a threat that the domain will be suspended because of abuse, not detailing the abuse, the report or anything else. Missed that email because of the weekend and they did not call either. Wake up in the morning with the domain suspended and no way to unsuspend it for like three days when their abuse staff finally provided the report they got and I wrote a really nice review about my experiences with them on Trustpilot.
So bottom line is, they are good for price, quick to take your money, but support is business hours and useless, even if you pay over a thousand every year to them. So I started to move everything out, the extra 20 cents they offer cheaper are not worth it, not if in a serious abuse matter they can't afford to call you on the phone on file to sort things out, not if their incompetent abuse staff can't handle a matter for three days.
