Reseller hosting using Cpanel $10/year - Use of the Moodle - SPAM?

Hello guys,

I will not post the server. This is not necessary.
But I'd like to know your opinion about a server provider that SUSPEND one account (not all accounts, just one domain) because it is using MOODLE (moodle.org) as a plataform to teach employers of a company.
This company has 4,000 employers.

At the moment the account was blocked (suspended) it had 169 members registered.

The e-mail that the client received was:

"eason: TOS Violation: Phishing Spam/bulk from f@*******..br
“root” suspended the account.

You can manage account suspension in WHM’s Manage Account Suspension interface at: https://cap****.fast*****.com:2087/scripts2/suspendacctlist"

As the reseller, I tried to unsuspend the account. I could not.
I opened a ticket.
They replied because it was having abuse of the TOS/SPAM.

I explained that TEACHING plataform ONLY allows that a specific domain (of the company) can register in the plataform. So, it is NOT POSSIBLE someone that is NOT from the company to register.

So, I had to reply the client trying to explain WHY the account was suspended.
It was NOT really a good experience.
Not really a good one.

Each member needs to register and he will need to go to the webmail of the company to open the REGISTRATION LINK to be allowed to sign in to the account.

169 e-mails were sent (maybe a bit more, as they did not say how many, I can not precise).

IF MOODLE is not allowed, why it is in Softaculos options?

I had problem when had 169 members. Imagine with 4,000.

--

Now I will setup SMTP account from Gmail or Mailchimp or sendgrid to solve this "problem".

Remember: IT IS NOT POSSIBLE a person using gmail, hotmail or any other e-mail to register in the system, except the company one.

I have an account there for about 2 years.

What is your experience about this?

Is Moodle a SPAM SYSTEM?

Happy 2019!

They blocked your account because you sent 169 mails originating and within the same mail server?

  • another useless thread. abuse clearly says spam/email. So OP doesn't ask for proof of email to examine? Than goes onto setup separate external email to prevent this "problem"?

You're a huge cunt abusing a shared service. According to them.

Post a standard message you send and we'll decide if it's spam.

Probably the hosts are worried about the load moodle creates, than the emails it generates.

  • Moodle (moodle.org) is a teaching system.
Each NEW member that register will receive an e-mail saying somethig like:

Hey, click on this link to create your account.
    link...

I did not create any "message". Moodle has its own message to new registers.

Have you ever used MOODLE in your life?

    About spam :

Do you know the mail limitations on your shared hosting plan? Did some of the member registered at same time range? Maybe your plan is have a limited mail sending ( it is very cheap ), and some member registered at the same time and it reach that limitations.

Did you ask for sample email that marked as spam? As far as I know Moodle sent email on member registration and on other actions such as quiz etc. Check this also with email limitations and the Moodle configurations. Maybe the moodle website also compromised/hacked so it sent email without you know about that etc.

Did you already configure correct mail setting such as dkim, spif, etc? Maybe your provider got spam report for that domain from other server because incorrect mail configuration.

    About Moodle :
Are you serious to host a Moodle website for 4000 users on $10/year shared hosting plan? Even if the provider not banned because of spam, they will banned for resources hogging.

Did you already calculate out of this 4000 member how many will be online at one time at maximum? Did you already calculate how many ram , CPU and disk I/o that they will be need to handle this?

    https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=374293

Why they provide Moodle on softaculous? It's 1 package with other scripts and if you just want less than 100 member with maximum online user less than 20 at one time and no custom module etc then maybe your shared plan will be enough or if you want to use that as demo site or just learn about Moodle then it maybe enough, but definitely not for production sites with 4000member and a possibility to have more than 20 members online.

  • $10/yr? Seriously? Cheaper than my nephew’s diapers.

  • Maybe the moodle installation was compromised.

  • Ask for a copy of the spam email! Even with an external SMTP provider you might have problems in the future, so I would move this site off a budget host especially as it's a production site.

I'm going to be honest, I got excited when I saw a thread about Moodle. It's my bread and butter, if anyone here ever needs help with it feel free to reach out.

Moodle default emails are regularly detected as spam by many providers, especially company mail server... The amount of whitelists I've had to ask for I don't wish on anyone. Customising these messages helps a lot. It's also possible that you simply sent too many emails in a short amount of time.

You will not be able to run a 4000 user Moodle install on a $10/year shared hosting account unless you only have one concurrent user at a time. There is a reason companies exist that specialise in Moodle hosting.

You seriously need external help since you are not qualified to deal with web administration. You pasted notice of phising email/bulk. Instead of trying to figure out what email; you went out of your way to blame moodle.

What is your proof of your allegations? All I read is nonsense and ignorance.

  • When I got spam notification from my provider with my WordPress sites, blaming WordPress is the stupidest thing to do.
