Let's encrypt
Folks,
What are your thoughts on the new "Free SSL Everywhere" with Let's encrypt, as I hear that soon search engines will start to discredit this SSL! Having said this, correct me if I'm wrong I believe a while back Starfieldtech (now owned by GoDaddy) used to provide a service such as this before they went on tiered pricing.
Just would be interested to hear your take on this new phenomena

Got any source for that claim?
I somehow can hardly imagine that this could be true...
Would be weird if google would discredit lets encrypt they are a platinum sponsor...
I... what? Why would search engines do that? Hell, Google is one of the major sponsors of it.
Not comparable in the slightest. Let's Encrypt exists for the sole purpose of giving out free automated certificates and making TLS an obvious default for everything. It's not commercial.
@Bochi my thoughts exactly! I was in talks with an SEO expert
The SEO industry is 99% feel-good bullshit and make-believe 'optimization'. I'd take anything coming from there with a truckload of salt, if not accompanied by a non-SEO-industry source.
@joepie91 Now you see I was not aware that they were a major contributor! Perhaps the so called "SEO expert" is a cowboy expert! I've also seen that cPanel are offering their own free SSLs on the platform.
Fixed that for you.
I really don't like the works "SEO" and "experts" used so close together!
But yeah, maybe he was talking about the recent kick of the free StartCom certificates?
This feels like a WHT thread
The amount of bullshit that SEO experts say on a daily basis can't be calculated
a) You'd be extremely surprised if you had access to split tests done to assess what the fuck search engines value.
b) Chrome is the sponsor. Google is a huge company with different departments.
c) Could the free ssl cert be a minor ranking factor? Sure, it could. Is it? You need to test to find that out.
@zafouhar I agree! They'll say anything now adays to get you on board with their products and services. Guess its best to keep to Yoast for now.
I doubt he's an expert on cowboys.
Bet he could convince @Sam_NH otherwise.
Maybe @Sam_NH doesn't know about horses.
@Nekki @trewq LOL! Meant to read ..."cowboy"
And also a non-CA industry source. I remember Comodo claiming that EV certificates might help your search rank, but they phrsed it in a very cagey way, lol. Nobody else seems to think it's true.
While true Google paid the money and signed the papers for the Platinum status, not Chrome.
There is no entity "Chrome LLC". Google itself, as company, is the contract partner and has, as this company (and not as "Chrome" sub-entity), obligations to fulfil.
Considering Wosign and Startssl had zero impact and neither did Alphassl wildcards: no, a directly (and not only one side - the entire trifecta: money, influence and infrastructure) sponsored SSL project will not get degraded - and, for pure liability aspect, it will not be higher ranked either.
Now that everyone knows shared hosting/shared IP is (99.9998%) zero worse than dedicated the SEO fuckers just need something else to
sellscam, and SSL is profitable.Doesn't matter to my point. Huge company, compartmentalized teams. If you really think the search engine team confers with the rest before making engineering decisions or vice versa, what can I say.

Did you run tests?
If that's something everyone knows, I suggest it's time to start doubting it.
Google does have a history of weighting search results by what technologies/fads it wants to see succeed. For example, wasn't there an announcement that they ranked mobile/responsive sites higher than those without?
It wouldn't surprise me if they rank sites with https higher than those without. If true, then Let's Encrypt would presumably make a site ranked higher than a site with plain old http.
And yeah, my SEO theories are just as good as any cowboy's!
They've been openly doing that since 2014: https://webmasters.googleblog.com/2014/08/https-as-ranking-signal.html
Already happening like Mobile sites. One of the biggest changes we saw in 2016 was Google’s shift towards mobile-first indexing.
SEO guys are bs and spammers most of the time
Bullshit or not, there is no harm in putting ssl on your site and encrypting the data flow. So you should if you can.
This SSL ranks higher propaganda goes mainstream once http2 is set enforced sometime mid next year. So better prepare for it and not loose on that part.
While I do not know whether Let's Encrypt is better or worse than a paid cert, it is defiantly better to use ssl. HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) you can read more about it here https://https.cio.gov/hsts/ seems to be a standard being pushed. I believe that this correlates to being a more trusted site in Google thus higher page rank. While my website is not open I have gotten on the first page of google with no content. So I believe it definitely matters.
Also you can use this cheat sheet to setup your headers https://www.owasp.org/index.php/HTTP_Strict_Transport_Security_Cheat_Sheet . If you do not mind having no http at all you can submit your website here https://hstspreload.org/ to submit your site but please keep in mind that it will not show at all if you do not have ssl so it may behoove you to get a paid certificate.
Also you can check out additional information here a the https://www.chromium.org/hsts . God bless you!
And how many webpages was your SEO Expert guy able to rank on Google's first page?
No such thing as SEO experts more likely SEO retards.. Just google for "traffic generating bot" as they do use it to show instantly result but users/customers dont know that its fake traffic.
I mean.. your posts to try and get backlinks to NodHop aren't work that well either are they?
It's exactly the same as any other domain validated cert.
Yeah but I don't know how it makes me feel. It's not green in safari, and green is pretty. Only green is secure. I heard google was going to stop recognizing not green ones. Look at my signature please. Everyone look at my signature.
