dedicated server with CPU w/ integrated GPU

edited February 2017 in Requests

I'm looking for a dedicated server in the USA with a CPU w/ integrated GPU

CPU example: E3-1245v5 or i7-3770 or i7-4770 or i7-6770, 30TB BW, 32GB Ram, 1Gbps port, 4TB SATA

Budget ~$50/month.

Please submit your offers.

  • Hetzner.

  • You will not find anything in this budget range in the US. Go with Hetzner or you might need to consider higher budget ranges

Hetzner peering is horrible, not usable from the North America.

Will OVH (Quebec) do? SYS has a few that are almost in your budget.

    https://www.soyoustart.com/us/essential-servers/

Also WSI has an "i7-3700" which I think is supposed to say 3770, 2TB HDD + 120GB SSD instead of 4TB but mentioning in case you can work with that.

OVH seems ok but don't like the 250mbps guaranteed BW. Don't need unlimited BW but prefer 1Gbps burst.

Cant have your cake and eat it too, especially in that already not realistic budget.

  • I can increase my budget to $70-80 for an i7-6770k. Any suggestions?

  • Maybe if you wait a little. Intel supposedly cut some CPU prices in response to the Ryzen. The Ryzen itself might be worth looking into, but it will be a while.

  • Here is another, 2TB and 16GB RAM: https://www.wholesaleinternet.net/cart/?id=302

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. I just signed for the "i7-3700" with NOCIX.net with hourly billing to test it out: https://www.nocix.net/cart/?id=302&hourly=true

  • Thanks, that definitely looks like a WSI brand or reseller, but the hourly offer is interesting. I wonder how many they have.

Just curious what are you using a DED GPU for on a dedi server?

    Remote gaming?

Doing HW accelerated transcoding with ffmpeg. With these Intel processors with integrated GPU I can do 20x 1080p 10mbps transcoding compared to about 5x with just software.

    Thanked by 1doughmanes

Interesting, what config are you using to transcode with the Intel gpu? Are results as good as cpu coding? I have an i7-3770 at Hetzner so might give it a try. I thought I had looked into this and found the interesting formats were supported only for NVidia.

The more recent Intel generations have much faster gpu's than the older ones so if you're really into this, I'd definitely go for a 6770 or 7700 rather than a 3770 or 4770.

  • Thanks, I don't see anything in there about ffmpeg though. I wonder if Plex is using some non-ffmpeg codec.

  • I can't tell you what this Plex HW transcoding is using but yes, some of the plex transcoding is using ffmpeg: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200250377-Transcoding-Media There are two types.

I recall when you use the optimize function in plex that that too is using ffmpeg.

  • Thanks, I'm looking at some ffmpeg related pages. Will report if I do a successful hw transcode on my i7.

    oops /shrug

  • I got the i7-3770 server with the integrated GPU to work with beta version of Plex which supports HW transcoding. Recommend using beta version of VAAPI and Intel graphics drivers:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wsnipex/vaapi
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install libva1 vainfo i965-va-driver
sudo usermod -a -G video plex # or whichever user that's running plex

Then logout and log back in. Then type:

    vainfo

The install works if you see something like this:

error: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set in the environment.
error: can't connect to X server!
    libva info: VA-API version 0.39.4
    libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_drv_video.so
libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_0_39
    failed to open /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/hybrid_drv_video.so
    Failed to wrapper hybrid_drv_video.so
    libva info: va_openDriver() returns 0
    vainfo: VA-API version: 0.39 (libva 1.7.3)
vainfo: Driver version: Intel i965 driver for Intel(R) Bay Trail - 1.7.3
    vainfo: Supported profile and entrypoints
          VAProfileMPEG2Simple : VAEntrypointVLD
          VAProfileMPEG2Simple : VAEntrypointEncSlice
          VAProfileMPEG2Main : VAEntrypointVLD
          VAProfileMPEG2Main : VAEntrypointEncSlice
          VAProfileH264ConstrainedBaseline: VAEntrypointVLD
          VAProfileH264ConstrainedBaseline: VAEntrypointEncSlice
          VAProfileH264Main : VAEntrypointVLD
          VAProfileH264Main : VAEntrypointEncSlice
          VAProfileH264High : VAEntrypointVLD
          VAProfileH264High : VAEntrypointEncSlice
          VAProfileH264StereoHigh : VAEntrypointVLD
          VAProfileVC1Simple : VAEntrypointVLD
          VAProfileVC1Main : VAEntrypointVLD
          VAProfileVC1Advanced : VAEntrypointVLD
          VAProfileNone : VAEntrypointVideoProc
          VAProfileJPEGBaseline : VAEntrypointVLD

Installing ffmpeg w/ VAAPI HW transcoding (not required for Plex).

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:djcj/hybrid
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo app-get install ffmpeg

  • Got some benchmarks?

    OMG

Yes you can find something in North America,

The intel HD graphics on these are pretty powerful, tested on Windows 8.1 Pro on the $49 USD model, ran steam games and MC with no lag

Delivery time in BHS is 120sec

Edit: looks like OP already found a server

  • Network/peering is very marginal at NOCIX.net so looking for another provider.

Anyone has any experience to Dedispec? This server looks interesting: https://www.dedispec.com/client/cart.php?a=confproduct&i=0

How did you view the games, did you use tightvnc or?

Yes I used a combination of RealVNC and Steam in-home streaming over a VPN (Hamachi on server and my PC)

  • i suggest nocix.net
