5400rpm disks are a bottleneck in my laptop, I'm sure they suck on a server

Depend on what you running there. When I use for Office editing, browsing, web dev it still fast enough.

I have i76700hq on the laptop, high end nvidia graphics, 8gb ram, and I'm having a pretty shitty run, the disk is bottlenecking at 100% at mutiple things. If we are discussing laptops, SSD is a must I think. It's unhealthy to jump to conclusions for server usage from this data, but I think 5400 is just too shitty at this point in time. Just don't.

@ikoula yeah for sure. as said above I won't care about the 5400 tr/min while looking for a storage solution. yet you're offer does come with only one disk so no redundancy in case of disk failure at all.

given the price point at around 10€ per TB - I would rather go with hetzner auctions or something like that, which meet that pricepoint too but offer more RAM, 1Gbps and so on.

and even if I would not want to raise my budget above 20€ kimsufi beats you pricewise on that one with 16,99 while having more RAM ...

TL;DR; to be an acceptable offer in this part of the market I'd at least expect 2x2TB disk and probably 1 Gbps port for that price.

  • I'll await the LET offer, but a 50% offer won't cut it for me

    NEAT stuft, better AS before.

  • If the pricing beats kimsufi / online for a cheap storage box, you'll have a winner, 5400 or not.

  • Never letting go of my 15euro kimsufi i5-3570S/2TB.

    Grandfathered pricing FTW.

Well, 5400 RPM (WD GREEN in RAID1 so IOPS was not bad... but...) was really surprise for me when I got 20€ server from servdiscount.com. But another surprise was that they agreed to change 5400 to 7200 without any additional cost when I asked for it. Great support btw. I have twice IOPS with 7200 now (approx 190Mb/s vs 95Mb/s). Meanwhile 5400 RPM is proper choice for storage server... but not for 20€ ;)

Alex, but you got right idea ;)
You can find HDD 1Tb RAIDx RAM 2Gb BW 1Gbps (shared) VPS storage for 5-7€ now and you can even host not large sites there. So double price for cool "bare-metal" word and we get 15€ :) I vote for it.

Put another 2TB disk and price will be OK.
