  • Thanks for this info, glad that I read this. I don't need those extras 8 GB from Online.net directly. So this cheaper (plus no setup fee) box, is a much better deals.

Plus, I love your serverstatus script. Been using it, for years :)

  • Hoax, prank or not, I suppose everyone must admit that during Black Friday 2016 event Online.net ran very quick and resonant offer, which begot so much high-quality flame :)

Yeah I got one too, possibly Online.Net windows templates work?

Yeah Im thinking of using the same. Server not provisioned yet

Yeah just got mine, and yes it works. And wow the server is fast.

Got mine too. But ssd speeds around 120MBps only Wondering if I should ask for refund and shift to 1TB
    drive

Disk model ? Make sure to test with hdparm -t /dev/sda. All these DELL drives are limited to SATA2 for compatibility with old DELL servers.

  • I've got one with sdd.

    /dev/sda:

    Timing buffered disk reads: 766 MB in 3.00 seconds = 254.96 MB/sec

    Looks perfectly fine for SATA2.

    Try smartctl -a /dev/sda | grep Model

It's all normal. You've got the slowest drive which is available in these machines ;)

Max read speed is 270 MB/s
Max write speed is 130 MB/s

Drive itself is SATA2 native. 320 series were all SATA2, SATA3 was introduced in 330 series.

    Other SSD possibilites were:

DELL Intel DC S3500 160 GB which has a 270 MB/s read speed (without DELL firmware it would be 475 MB/s) and 175 MB/s write speed.

    Samsung PM871 128 GB which has 540 MB/s a read speed and 140 MB/s write speed.

Seagate 600 Series Enterprise 240 GB which has a 520 MB/s read speed and 400 MB/s write speed.

Results are pretty good, here is a comparison with the intel ssdsc2bb160g4, and my personal ssd.

Haha I know, I have 3 Samsung evo ssds in my personal rig, quite surprising that these perform this bad. But i guess cant ask more at this price.

What are you planning to do with the server?

  • These Intels will last at least 2x times longer than Samsung. Both are Enterprise grade and Samsung PM871 is just a desktop drive.

  • Quick bench:

    openssl speed rsa4096
    rsa 4096 bits 0.049751s 0.000757s 20.1 1320.8

    time dd bs=1M count=16384 if=/dev/zero of=/var/tmp/test conv=fdatasync
    17179869184 bytes (17 GB, 16 GiB) copied, 89.1849 s, 193 MB/s
    real 1m29.188s

    hdparm -i /dev/sda | grep Model
    Model=INTEL SSDSC2BB160G4T

Nothing tremendous, but not that bad for such a price w/ 8GB RAM and unlimited bw

  • It should be SSDSC2BB160G4R instead of SSDSC2BB160G4T to get SATA3 speeds ;)

Well not a surprise, like ever Online special gets bought up by some arseshole for reselling at a 2-3 time the original price.

Fuck know's why they don't just limit them to one per account.

  • I would give 15 to 30€ for getting one but ownership change is Not possible on online.net ... and yes limitiing would be a good idea ... but i think it was an hidden Deal for oneprovider

afaik you can't change ownership, right? So how they resell them?

  • The give you root pw ? And installing with API i think

  • Ill buy one if they can be transferred.

    Lol, are people that naive?

  • It's always the same - for whole two weeks they were available directly from Online.net for 10,99 Euro without setup. Getting 160 GB SSD was very easy, 240 GB was also possible as reported on that forum, but a lot harder. I actually never got a single one.
