    Take heed Dominic. ^

    You don't have to be an A* GCSE student to do A levels, I'm mostly an A student, one or two B's and I'm doing A levels, totally possible even with C's if you get into a sixth form and put your head down. Yes, even if you get to a crap sixth form, you'll probably have even more chance of getting in, and there are foundation year schemes at university for crap sixth forms etc. I believe.

    Smartass. :3

  • @dominicl said: Never heard of extended.

    I'm about to finish my Extended BTEC Diploma for IT Practitioners - the Extended course has 18 units instead of 9(?) and my course also includes Cisco Essentials or something along that line. Is an insanely boring course.

  • Please. Dominic. Just No.

    I believe the mantra is..
    Get up. Get out. Get drunk. Repeat as needed.

    @Connorl said: m doing A Levels, Same grades as you.

    Much better :)

    BTW as @Jack pointed out - that course is "equivalent" to 2 A-levels. I.e. even if you do it perfectly, your qualification is work sh*t all.. Not trying to detract from any value associated with doing it, just trying to suggest why there are better options.

  • InfinityInfinity Member, Host Rep

    Naah, don't do that. You'll be bored as anything. Only choose Computing, ICT and IT are just theory crap and "applied" stuff and what not. Nothing to do with the proper stuff, check the specifications.

    I'm doing;

    • Mathematics
    • Physics
    • Geography
    • Computing (some of the schools I applied to didn't have it so I had to choosed ICT/IT)

    So far with my GCSE's;

    • Mathematics (already got A, re-sat for A*, awaiting results late April)
    • Core Science (already got A, couldn't resit the ISA [got a C, A* in all of the modules though], because apparently the specification ended)
    • Additional Science (heading for an A, got A in Physics and Chemistry and the ISA so just Biology left)
    • English Language (heading for A/B, got an A for 60% so far, got a 40% exam left soon)
    • English Literature (heading for A/B, got an A for 25% so far, got two exams left)
    • Georgraphy (heading for A, got an A in all the modules, controlled assesment feels like it may be A* or A)
    • History (heading for A/B, got an A and a B in the modules, controlled assesment fees like it may be an A* or A)
    • Business Studies (heading for A, got an A in 40% so far, the 60% controlled assesment which I handed in yesterday, yes the holidays, yes the school is incompetent, yes I didn't get the full 10 hours allocated to me for the controlled assesment but it feels like it's going to be an A)
    • Business and Communications (heading for A*, got high A in the module [no revision whatsoever], controlled assesment has to be an A* [it was designing a website, and you had to print the damn website, c'mon, it's 2013..], and practical has to be A*, and yes I wrote ICT in my options not Business and Communications, damn school)

    @dominicl

    Currently in my final term of the Extended Diploma in Level 3 IT, looking to come out with Distinctions overall, honestly, take my FIRM advice and go to Sixth form, FUCK btecs, NOBODY values them. You don't learn in the modules what you' want to learn.

    Look at the course specifications, the modules are utter shit. It's all 'old-age' stuffs, the specifications has not been updated properly in years, it still thinks that ADSL is a trending technology, and that satellite phones will take over the world.

    I'm luckily going to Uni in september to do Computer Forensics & Security which will be accredited by the BCS.

    Don't waste your time with college, get yourself into the best sixth form around you, it'll look so much better having A level Computing (not IT) which focuses on the actual system and programming than word-processing than a BTEC Diploma would.

    image

    Look, the diploma would only JUST get you into uni if you aced it, which, if you have staff like we do, they don't teach you or base their scenarios around topics which you can get the distinction straight, you have to do some curvy movements and weird ways and appendix's in every report and then reference the scenario third-party.

    I feel like I've wasted my years at College, being at sixth form, I'd of been through my first year of Uni by now and so much further in life, nobody cares at college, sixth form still has the restrictions of being y'know, 5-day/week and being in during some holidays, BUT you get a better qual, better experience, and you're ready for Uni with exam prep, you'll also probs have a better portfolio out of it too.

    Again, my 2cents. Don't waste these crucial years of your life.

    @ConnorL Nobody really cares about GCSEs after Education, it's about your formal quals, the only ones they'll care highly about is lit lang and mathematics and possibly your science, The rest... Business at GCSE? Bah. My girlfriend is studying it at Uni (Biz / Politics Combined Subjects) and she claims that when she did it at school, which she got the A* for, she felt that Sixth form was much more indepth and more helpful.

    True, however you need it to get into a good sixth form first. That is what I'm trying to do, got an interview at the local grammar school on the 15th which is good for me, they're one of the only schools locally that do Computing as opposed to ICT too. For Computer Science etc. at university, they look at English Language (not literature), Mathematics, and all of the Sciences you choose, they prefer you doing at least one Science. Business Studies is BS (y).

    Same here. ;)

    Your stuff looks good, but Law and Food Tech...lol

  • The UK education systems looks so complex...

  • Awmusic12635Awmusic12635 Member, Host Rep

    @rds100 I was thinking the same

  • Its not, When you know it.

    Primary School
    Secondary School
    Sixth Form | College | apprenticeships
    Uni

  • @RDS100 It's stupid.

    @ConnorL

    Sort of wrong.
    Secondary is the most important, as it leads to the next step, how people view it up here is...

    Sixth Form - Kids who either can't be bothered to look for another place, or kids who want to excel.

    College - For kids who are pretty much 'i dont really know, but ill go here because the course title looks good and offers BTECs which ive been told lies about.'

    Apprenticeships - For kids who actually look, but only actually succeed if they look into it properly.

    Uni - The end result of Sixth Form usually, not many college beings go to Uni as they got sick of education that much during it with the lack of focus from shitty staff.

  • @eastonch, that was ment to be in time order.

    Connor

  • @dominicl It seems that all you are doing is bringing the deadweight of people's negative expectations to bear on you. The less you say about your plans the better. You wind up focusing on what people might think of your failures or failings instead of getting the job done, not that failing in a tough business environment will be considered a personal failure.
    My advice to you is to not depend on it for a living and being well funded and having enough time to get it right.

    Anyway if the determination to prove others wrong is what will you motivate to succeed then go for it, but don't sacrifice your education in the process..
