Canonical attempting to bill OVH for use of the "Ubuntu" trademark
@ubuntu asks us to bill you 1e-2e per month for each VPS/PCI/PCC/SD. If not, prohibition to use the mark "Ubuntu" on our website.

Not the first time which Canonical attempts to stupidly enforce their trademark:

Crazy, sounds like someone in their legal team knows how to shoot them selves in the feet on a PR basis!
Sounds like a great time to not use Ubuntu.

When I saw his tweet at first I thought I was reading it wrong.
Great idea Canonical...
Debian thanks
If they ask this all providers it will end up no one will provide Ubuntu so basically Ubuntu is shooting them self.
I wouldn't miss Ubuntu on any server. Debian/CentOS/*BSD for the win.
As someone who has never really used Ubuntu I am still laughing about it.
Were their lawyers drunk or something? They can still clarify that and we'll understand.
Old but still good comparison, i learn linux server on ubuntu and then switch to debian like 7 years ago ;p
time to scrap the Ubuntu as it's unauthorised modification and copy of Debian anyway!
LOL
Canonical having PMS.
I mean... if you were a lawyer, would you be sober?

Looks like DreamHost has already paid them. What the actual fuck.
I do believe Canonical used the Debian source, did some modification, majority of the source is still pure Debian and open source software (Apache, PHP, MySQL and other libraries) and now is trying to charge everyone to use "their" software.
Shots fired. Despite their size, it's still fairly easy to dismiss OVH for a lot of people. DreamHost, however, not a lot of people running around with bad things to say about them. Who's next, I wonder?
They can't charge OVH but they:
1- Don't need authorization to modify Debian
2- Can modify the software and charge for it
This is pathetic anyway and there is no chance that I will voluntarily deploy Ubuntu, after this. This is ridiculous beyond reason.
You want to read a bit on how Open Source works Of course Ubuntu is mostly Debian. There is no authorization required to fork an OSS project. Ubuntu can only charge for support and their trademarks (and CDs but who buys physical CDs in the mail any more).
Do you really want me to tell?
Heh, that'd be interesting
Heh, that's why I like Debian way more than Ubuntu. Well, not this case, but the fact that the development in Debian is so much better.
I do not run Ubuntu anywhere other than in a server that needs GUI. Other than that, it's always Debian.
How should we name it then according to him? That's funny.
What if they just call it "Debian variant of which the name shan't be uttered" and install the Ubuntu iso when we click it? Probably sth like that's gonna happen.
Why the hell would anybody use Ubuntu over Debian for a server anyway?
I see no reason for prefering Ubuntu over Debian on a server anyways
Marketing and "community support" (don't really know how to call it).
I get it, they see an opportunity to raise some funds for using the trademark, if you are a fan of and use Ubuntu as your main distro when did you last contribute something to help them with the cost? Large scale open source projects don't function without funding.
A interesting approach certainly, agree or not, if Dream Host paid then clearly it's an approach that works in some way.
Does this affect you as a user? Nope, if it starts to that is another issue. Ubuntu is popular, they have lots of paid staff and need to raise funds best they can like most others open source projects.
The whole "I have never really used Ubuntu but oh after this I never will", get a grip.
Raised prices do affect users. We're on LET, what else could affect users?
