OVH/SYS Raid Configuration

chonkchonk Member

Hi All,
I just got my new SYS server. I'm going to install Vmware Esxi on it.

But here's the question.
I want to use software raid 10 but there's no option.

1) How can I make raid with it? There is 2x3TB HDD.
2) Do you recommend RAİD 1 or RAID 0 with Esxi? I guess there is option for raid 1 and raid 0.

I will use it to create 3 VM for hosting websites.

You need 4 drives for RAID-10.
    You can either do:

    • No RAID
    • RAID-0
    • RAID-1
      with 2 drives.

RAID-0: More space. In your case: 6 TB total. One drive dies, your data dies. Risky.
RAID-1: Less space. In your case: 3 TB total. One drive dies, your data persists. Not as risky.

Thank you for reply, great explanation.
What about performance? With raid-1 am i going to face high cpu load because of md3_resync process or something?

Or is it better to go with RAID-0 and daily cpanel backups?

Is RAID-1 makes i/o disk performance worst than single hdd?

  • ESXi can't do software RAID.

Ah, right. I had overseen the ESXi part. Yes, ESXi did not support any software RAID at all when I checked for the last time. Proxmox (KVM) might be a better solution for the OP. http://proxmox.org/en/

I personally shit my pants when using RAID-0. But this depends very much on you and your usage. If 24h old backups are enough for you when shit hits the fan, then RAID-0 might be an option.

No, it is identical or even a tiny bit better (using RAID-1) from my experience. Someone correct me if I am wrong here. You will, however, have some CPU spike from time to time with software RAID-1. Once in a week in my case for 1-2 hours. It's bearable, but noticable.

Reads are generally faster, writes can be a tiny bit slower. I wouldn't expect any noticeable CPU spikes, RAID-1 takes virtually no CPU - perhaps some external process?

see this is the problem with this place. If you're giving advice please check it first.

Esxi does not have the mdadm drivers loaded into the kernel. ON PURPOSE.

  • I tried hard to get ESXi work with soft raid but I have to give up eventually. I am happy with KVM now.

Thank you guys. I installed ESXi without RAID as it's needed to be.
Looks like now I need to backup server daily.

So you rent an E5-1650 I presume ? How's the system feel ?

So far so good. Works good for now, but didn't installed everything yet.
