What are your preferred SSH apps for different platforms and why?

edited March 2016 in General

Was just wondering what's your preferred SSH app on different platforms - I'm currently using:

OS X: Terminal

Have no problems with it, it works great.

Android: JuiceSSH

Works great, ~S$8 for Pro is a bit too expensive, though. Would be willing to pay S$5 for that.

...and I'm looking for better (and cheaper?) alternatives (esp for Android) cause I can't be bothered to pay for the pro version of JuiceSSH, though it's featured filled and has what I need to get things done even more quickly.

Personally, I will need to be working on the go from next week onwards (on my Z3 or Mi Pad), after my camp since I can only make time to manage servers while commuting, gotta spend some time on school anyway.

Thanks!

  • Putty on Windows tablet and desktop, Server Auditor on iOS... Don't have an android so can't say much there. My OS X box I just use the terminal like yourself.

  • iTerm2 on OS X is the only way to go, IMO. v3 beta is nice: https://www.iterm2.com/version3.html

MobaXterm for windows. Nice tabbed sessions like so -

Does it support taking tabs out into their own windows? Like taking a chrome tab out and putting its own window on another monitor.

Yeah, just right click the tab and "Detach tab".

  • juice ssh pro is worth the money, although I get it for free a while ago

iterm2 on mac or royal tsx if you want a more multi session interface that is very pretty, with some other protocols in it too.

    https://www.royalapplications.com/ts/osx/features

and prompt2 (by panic) on iOS. https://panic.com/prompt/ . By far the nicest one for iOS

+1 for Royal TS (TSX is OSX version I assume?)

I use it for windows RDP sessions at work.

Terminal, Terminator and PAC for Linux.

  • Try SSH Secure Shell Client for Windows , I hope you will enjoy it :)

  • tommytommy Member

    terminator on linux.
    On android juicessh nothing else.

  • Mac OS X - iTerm is the best choice for Mac OS X
Windows - Putty/MobaXterm (second one is better for GUI fags since it has sftp , tabs, etc). Royal TS is very very bad for windows (not sure about Mac version)
    Android - JuiceSSH

  • Maybe a good idea for me to wait for a discount before buying JuiceSSH heh :) I know there WAS a discount so yeah.

Thanks for the your responses, gonna try Royal TSX when I get home. Tried iTerm 2, never tried the beta, but will get to that too :)

  • Serverauditor on iOS. iTerm is amazing on OS X :)

  • Windows: XShell

    Thanked by 1deadbeef
  • RoyalTS/Royal TSX on windows osx (I prefer RoyalTS to TSX), Sometimes just the SSH command from terminal if I want to connect to something I've not bothered to add to Royal (It's usually quicker)

Likewise sometimes use Putty on windows if I can't be bothered to start Royal.

I did have something on android but I don't think I ever re-installed it when I changed device, I'd only use SSH from a tablet/phone in an emergency as I don’t seem to get on well with onscreen keyboards

  • PuTTY.

First SSH program I ever used, small, lightweight, standalone and does everything I need.

  • Linux: Guake
    Android: JuiceSSH
    iOS: Serverauditor

  • konsole.

    • Linux > Shell (whatever happens to be installed)
    • Android > JuiceSSH (really worth the money, if you have to use it regularly)

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I change it to a white background with dark grey font, instead of black background with white font.

Putty and JuiceSSH got it for free during a limit promotion.

Since I sadly must use Windows as my desktop OS for software I need, I use the cygwin so I can use tmux and other commands I'm used to on linux. It is basically almost a native linux terminal experience on Windows.

    Cygwin+OpenSSH under Windows

    OpenSSH under GNU/Linux

Android? nothing. Unfortunately, the excellent JuiceSSH can't work with modern servers using decent security ('coz the app relies on a poorly maintained 3rdparty library). Worth knowing before buying.

I type commands directly into the Terminal on Mac and Linux.

I normally recommend PuTTY to Windows customers. PuTTY has been a standard for so long. After reading a similar thread on LowEndTalk, maybe there is something better. I wonder if there are Windows applications that might be better than PuTTY ... :

    • ... which are free for home use?
    • ... which are free for commercial use?

    See this thread:

KITTY for windows, Juicessh for Android (also got the full version for free). SSH for linux (haha).
I also use Mosh through MobaXterm sometime when I'm on shitty connections (JUICESSH supports Mosh natively, but not sure if it works in free version) .

  • Windows > SmarTTY, PuTTY

    Android > Serverauditor

  • windows : xshell n mobaxterm
