Namecheap is certainly popular, but it has an "F" rating from the Los Angeles Better Business Bureau:

To be fair, pretty much all of them aren't even related to Namecheap. But they should at least respond to the BBB.
I thought registrants are only leasing the domains, never owning them.
I've found name.com to be quite good.
There's a promo code for free whois privacy that you'll find through google. You can renew with that code too. At least they haven't taken it away in the 2 years I've used that code with them.
