Would work for basic headless development and backups for sure... but it would pull a lot of electricity if on 24 / 7. Good if you use it only when it needs to be used. If you want to just do backups, get a raspberry pi and external powered usb hdd - 15 watts max.
Why is everybody so bent out of shape about a couple of watts of electricity? I agree that it's a good idea to cut down on energy usage in general, but this particular focus seems out of proportion. Why not pick stores close to home, buy local electronics only, and make U turns instead of going around the block? It's as if energy usage only counts when it's electricity.
Because only electricity costs me money. I don't care if my seafood comes from Thailand and gets finished in Africa (means cheaper), or if my kiwis are from NZ. But the electricity for my Atom home server already costs more than a kidéchire would.
Nah, this guy appear to know more than that guy
Well it costs a lot to run a car and a couple of times around the block costs the same as a Raspberry Pi in a year. That was my real point regarding immediate costs. Like auto costs, I've got a big electric bill and a few bucks plus minus is not a big deal on that budget.
waste energy with low performance. My opinion is > @rajprakash said:
keep it and use it to learn inner working and such if you don't already. You can also just donate it to some low income family that could probably use it for their kid's schooling. It's the time of giving
You could sell it on eBay. Or give it to someone who hasn't got any PC.
But don't forget to install him/her a fresh Lubuntu.
My electricity bill is already over the roof. Let's put it into a proportion you can understand. I can literally rent an apartment with what I pay in electricity. Maybe elec is cheaper by you? Running an old pc like that would cost me similar to an air condition running 8 hours a day or so. Would rather use it for comfort lol A pi costs 200 dollars (my country's money.. not u.s) for the year which is really cheap... roi is within a month. So overall, the idea of the pi and external hdd would mean a cost savings of over 80%. When you think about not losing any features for that price. Why keep that old machine running 24 7? Not to mention, just by manufactuing the pcs and gadgets we use, we are already encouraging peopke to get cancer, work for min wages, increasing carbon footprint etc. Why not be conscious of the environment at least to equalize or reduce the impact. The power is in our hands...literally lol
my point was that I can rent a server that is much better, for the same price as paying for just the electricity to run a server at home.
Of course, when it comes to money or environment in general, you should start big, not small. One should take care of the money on their savings account, before trying to save anything. And you can't really be good to the environment unless you stop flying and driving a car. The rest is peanuts in comparison.

Donate it to a nearby school or charity.
i am verry agree with this
Dast ist ficken wahr.
I mean I agree.
It's all about idle TDP. Donate it.
I'm getting ARM boards for all 24/7 use cases.
Donate it so that someone else could overpay for the wasteful idle TDP? Such generous.
Also I really don't think a school or a charity needs an old crappy computer that much -- with likely not the best fan and HDD situation, with who knows what set of software, etc.
yeah.. impossible to give away in rich countries. My school had to buy new computers every 3 years, because the federal state budget said so.
Based on my own experiences with donating old equipment:
In general, the people who are willing to accept any old computer are often without the technical skills needed to use it. Typical end users for equipment like that are churches and schools.
The end users do not have the historical knowledge to run old machines. They do not know how to find old versions of operating systems, software, etc. They do not know how to connect their computer to printers, the Internet, etc.
When you go to the trouble of setting it up for them, they complain that it won't do (name-modern-feature-here).
Because the computer is old, manufacturers no longer support the products that run on it with security updates. The old computer is vulnerable to hacking, email phishing, etc., compounded by the end users' lack of skills to protect themselves from such attacks.
No matter how much they promise not to bother you once the donation is complete and you have set it up for them, you become the 24x7 on-call technical support team forever.
My advice:
Donate the equipment to Goodwill or a computer recycling center, which isolates you from the end user. Be sure the hard drive has been thoroughly wiped first. Your computer may be a treasured bargain for someone who knows how to use it, or it may serve as a source for repair parts. Before you donate it, call and ask to make sure they will accept it. Often they won't, especially if it is very old.
If you cannot find a donation center who will accept it, you can try Craigslist or an auction site like eBay. Personally, I would not bother.
Otherwise, take it apart. Disassemble the hard drive(s) to recover the neodymium magnets, which are handy for all kinds of home uses. Destroy the hard drive platters to make the data unrecoverable. Recycle the metal and plastic. Take the circuit boards to your local hazardous waste center.
Keep it, store it, and give it to your grandchildren, and then your grandchildren will give it to theirs grandchildren and these other grandchildren will give it to their other grandchildren,...
And the last ones will sell it for a couple million $, and thank you very much, grandgrandgrandgrandgrandgrandgrandgrandgrandgrandfather
Stick it on ur TV.
How can I turn off notifications for this thread? I noticed nearly 70 notifications and turns out it was mostly idle banter. Nothing wrong with that I just don't need to be notified about people wanting to save a couple of pennies on their electric.
I was going to use it for encoding but I have a bad internet connection so pointless.
From all the suggestions non have piqued my interest too much. Not dissing just saying.
It was useful to have though when my other computer's cpu overheated last summer.
I don't have a laptop as a replacement or anything so for now it is valuable if I need a backup computer.
